Network of Centers of Excellence "Interfacial effects, novel properties and technologies of nanostructured materials" Presentation by Witold Lojkowski, CoE High Pressure network coordinator High Pressure Research Center Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw Outline: 1. Nanotechnology and nanomaterials 2. Example network 3. Our network 4. Problems 5. Results 6. Conclusions The network webpage: http://www.unipress/waw/pl/ce/interfacial

From CORDIS: Nanotechnology involves the control of materials at the nano-scale, achieving miniaturisation through atomic and molecular manufacturing techniques. Nanotechnology is truly multidisciplinary. The need to share knowledge, tools and techniques, and expertise on atomic and molecular interactions. Priority 1.1.3 and also others

Example of network. NanoMat Supraregional (German) Network for Nanotechnology Materials Based at FZ Karlsruhe. I m a member The subject of nanotechnology research are materials or devices the characteristic length scales of whose structures are in a range of less than 100 nanometers. A nanostructure of this type can be produced, e.g., by reducing to a few nanometers the crystallite size of polycrystals or the thickness of multilayer structures. This reduction gives rise to novel properties, which are highly attractive in a number of technical applications.

The motivation: a) Some encouragement from Brussels b) Increasing awareness that we need to form larger reserach groups c) A need for a change of attitude: previously we had in Poland a lot of international exchanges, but this was dissipated, based on individual contacts with western institutes but not with a strategic idea. d) The funding avaiilable (CoE project, national funding) permited to create the network.

"Interfacial effects in nanostructured materials 18 members now The main components of the network 7 Centers of Excellence. 7 Polish Institutes awarded with the Polish State Committe for Scientific Research Grant Nanomaterials Some institutes from Russia (and we will search for Ukraine member). Prohibitive approach of the EC, but Polish funding helps here where EU money cannot be used. Generous Grant of the Polish Sate Committee for Research (KBN)

NATIONAL SPECIAL PROJECT OF THE POLISH STATE COMMITTEE FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH "Metallic, Ceramic and Organic Nanomaterials: Processing Structure Properties Applications Benefits from exchange between best polish institutes active in the project.

The results after 6 months of activity... The basic principles: a) Freedom, give the opportunity too good people, and see what happens a) A net is used for fishing... 4 workshops, 2 general, 2 of thematic groups NEXT, 5th WORKSHOP: KRAKOW 17/18 SEPT. 2002 Satelite event to EMRS Fall MEETING. I cordially invite

Fishing results: New friendships New projects a) Nanostructured materials produced by Severe Plastic Deformation b) Synthesis and sintering of nanocrystalline powders for optolectrronic applications The results of networking cannot be foreseen in advance. a) expected result, but deeper understanding of the phenomena was achieved b) - completely unexpected activity and results

PROBLEMS: a) INTELECTUAL PROPERTY Working in the network leads to a specific, open, creative, club atmposhere. We need howevr to develop mechanisms for intelectual property Protection, for such a case. b) MECHANISMS TO INCORPORATE NEW MEMBERS AND ELIMINATE PASIVE MEMBERS (partial solution: associate and full members)

Expressions of Interest: the most important one We joined as the whole network the EoI from Institute of Nanotechnology Research Center Karlsruhe Prof Hans Fecht Network of Excellence NANOMAT Synthesis, Properties and Applications of Functional Nanomaterials With participation of groups and networks from all over Europe, also INDUSTRY, BANKS, TECHNLOGY IMPLEMENTATION CENTERS I believe this will work, and our network will be an Important part of this

FUNDING OF THE NETWORK IS FORESEEN IN THE NEW CoE PROJECT PRENABIO, RETAINED FOR NEGOTIATION Conclusions: Network: Interesting Experiment. The effort has brought benefits already in 12 months. Now let us see how it will grow and in which form, it will join the new EC Framework Progamme The best integration factor and deliverable: the scientific projects and results The network webpage: http://www.unipress/waw/pl/ce/interfacial
