NON VANISHING OF CENTRAL VALUES OF MODULAR L-FUNCTIONS FOR HECKE EIGENFORMS OF LEVEL ONE D. CHOI AND Y. CHOIE arxiv:00.58v [math.nt] 8 Jan 00 Abstract. Let F(z) = n= a(n)qn be a newform of weight k and level N with a trivial character, and assume that F(z) is a non-zero eigenform of all Hecke operators. For x > 0, let N F (x) := {D fundamental D < x,(d,n) =,L(F,D,k) 0}. A based on the Goldfeld s conjecture one expects to have N F (x) x (x ). Kohnen [0] showed that if k 6 is a even integer, then for x 0 there is a normalized Hecke eigenform F of level and weight k with the property that N F (x) k x (x ). In this paper, we extend the result in [0] to the case when k is any integer, in particular when k is odd. So, we obtain that, when the level is, for each integer k such that the dimension of cusp forms of weight k is not zero, there is a normalized Hecke eigenform F of weight k satisfying N F (x) x (x ). Introduction and statement of result Let F(z) = n= a(n)qn S k (N,χ 0 ) be a newform of weight k and level N with a trivial character χ 0, and assume that F(z) is a non-zero eigenform of all Hecke operators. For a fundamental discriminant D, that is D = or the discriminant of a quadratic field, we define the L function L(F,D,s) of F twisted with the quadratic character ( D ) by ( ) D a(n) n n. s In this paper, we consider the central values of L functions L(F,D,k). n It is well-known by Waldspurger [8] that the central critical values L(F, D, k) are essentially proportional to the squares of Fourier coefficients of the modular form of weight k + corresponding to F under Shimura correspondence. On the other hand, for x > 0, consider the set N F (x) := {D fundamental D < x,(d,n) =,L(F,D,k) 0}. 000 Mathematics Subject Classification. F67,F37. D. CHOI AND Y. CHOIE A based on the Goldfeld s conjecture one expected to have (.) N F (x) x (x ) ( In [5] Goldfeld conjectured that D fundamental, D <x,gcd(d,n)= ord s=k L(F,D,s) {D fundamental D < x,gcd(d,n) = } (x ).) In [4] using the theory of Galois representations of modular forms together with the results of Friedberg and Hoffstein [4], the following was proved N F (x) F x logx (x ). In [7] K. James gave an example of a form F, by looking at the difference of two special ternary theta series of level 56, satisfying N F (x) F x (x ). Furthermore, Kohnen [0] showed that if k 6 is an even integer, then there is a normalized Hecke eigenform F of level and weight k with the property that N F (x) k x for x 0; in particular, it was shown that N (x) x (x ) where is Ramanujan s -function of weight. More precisely, Kohnen proved that if N + k,γ (x) is the number of fundamental discriminant D, 0 < D < x, such that there exists a normalized Hecke eigenform F S k satisfying L(F,D,k) 0, then for any positive ǫ N + k,γ (x) 6π ǫ x (x ǫ 0). Here, S k is the space of cusp forms of weight k on Γ = SL(,Z). In this paper, we extend the result [0] to the case when k is any integer, in particular when k is odd. To obtain these results, we refine the argument of Kohnen by using an isomorphism [8] from the spaces of modular forms of integral weight to the Kohnen plus space of half integral weight modular forms. Let N k,γ (x) denote the number of fundamental discriminants D, D < x, such that there exists a normalized Hecke eigenform F S k satisfying L(F,D,k) 0, then we have the following: Theorem.. Suppose that k 9 is odd. Then for any positive ǫ N k,γ (x) 6π ǫ x (x ǫ 0). Let d k := dim(s k ). With the result of Kohnen [0] in which covers the case of k 0 (mod ), we state the following result:
NON VANISHING OF CENTRAL VALUES OF MODULAR L-FUNCTIONS 3 Theorem.. Suppose that k is a positive integer such that d k. Then for any ǫ > 0 N k,γ (x) 6π ǫ x (x ǫ 0). Theorem. immediately implies that for each integer k such that d k > 0 there is a Hecke eigenform F S k satisfying (.). Corollary.3. Suppose that k is an integer such that d k. Then there exists a Hecke eigenform F(z) S k such that for any positive ǫ N F (x) d k 6π ǫ x (x ǫ 0). Recently, Farmer and James [3] proved that the characteristic polynomial of the Hecke operator T on S k is irreducible over Q for k,000. If K is the field obtained from Q by adjoining the eigenvalues of T, then the Galois group G = Gal(K/Q) operates transitively on the set of normalized Hecke eigenforms in S k. Using Theorem. and the known fact [5] that L(F σ,d,k) alg = L(F,D,k) σ alg for all σ G, we have that every Hecke eigenform F S k satisfies (.) for each integers k, 6 k,000. Here, alg means algebraic part. Theorem.4. Suppose that 6 k,000 is an integer. Then every normalized Hecke eigenform F in S k satisfies (.) N F (x) 6π ǫ x (x ǫ 0). Remark.5. Maeda ([6] Conjecture.)made a conjecture that thehecke algebraof S k over Q is simple, and that its Galois closure over Q has Galois group G the full symmetric group. The conjecture implies that there is a single Galois orbit of Hecke eigenforms in S k. Thus, Maeda s conjecture implies that every normalized Hecke eigenform F in S k satisfies (.).. Preliminaries Let q := e πiz, where z is in the complex upper half plane H. For an integer k recall the normalized Eisenstein series E k (z) := 4k B k n σ k (n)q n of weight k, and for an integer r let H r+ (z) = N=0 H(r,N)qN be the Cohen-Eisenstein series of weight r + on Γ 0(4) (see []). Here, for each positive integer N, define { ( ) [r ] (r )!N r r π r L(r,χ ( ) h(r,n) = r N) if ( ) r N 0 or (mod 4), 0 if ( ) r N or 3 (mod 4),

The followings are proved in []: Proposition.. () For r, Cohen-Eisenstein series H r+ (z) is a modular form of weight r + on Γ 0(4) and it is in Kohnen plus condition, that is, H(r,N) = 0 if ( ) r N 0, (mod 4). () Let a and b be integers with a. Suppose that b is a quadratic non residue of a. Then the function G a,b (z) := N b (mod a) H(,n)q n is a modular form of weight 3 and character a over Γ 0(A), where we can take A = 4a, and furthermore A = a if a is even. For a nonnegative integer k denote M k+ (Γ 0 (4)) as the usual complex vector space of cusp forms of weight k+ on Γ 0(4) with the trivial character. In [8], Kohnen introduces the plus space M + k+ (Γ 0 (4)) of modular forms g(z) of weight k+ on Γ 0(4) with a Fourier expansion of the form g(z) = ( ) k n 0, (mod 4) c(n)q n. and proved the following isomorphism (Proposition in [8]). Proposition.. Let M k be the space of modular forms of weight k on Γ. If k is even, then the spaces M k Mk and M + k+ (Γ 0 (4)) are isomorphic under the map (f(z),h(z)) f(4z)θ(z)+h(4z)h5(z), where θ(z) = + n= qn. If k is odd, then the spaces M k 3 Mk 5 and M + k+ (Γ 0 (4)) are isomorphic under the map (f(z),h(z)) f(4z)h7 (τ)+h(4z)h For k we have M + k+ (Γ 0 (4)) = CH k+ S + (Γ k+ 0 (4)). The results of [], [9], and [8] connect the coefficients of Hecke eigenforms of halfintegral weight to the central L-values of twists of integral weight Hecke eigenforms. More precisely, suppose that f(z) = n= a(n)qn S k is a normalized Hecke eigenform and that g(z) = n= c(n)qn S + k+ (Γ 0 (4)) is a Hecke eigenform with the same Hecke eigenvalues as those of f. Here, (z).

For any even positive integer t, we have (3.5) R t (z) (mod 3). This is from the fact that if k 4 is an even integer, then E p (z) (mod p) for any prime p such that k 0 (mod p ) (see []). First, we assume that k is odd. For each odd integers k 9 define (3.6) Φ k+ (z) = 8H 3+ (z)r k 3 (z) 44 3 H 5+ (z)r k 5 (z) := β k (n)q n. Proposition. implies that G 3, (z) = n (mod 3) H(,n)qn is a modular form of weight 3 on Γ 0(36) such that its coefficients are 3-integral. have Thus, by computing a few coefficient modulo 3 and using Sturm s bound in ([6]) we (3.7) F(z) n (mod 3) β 9 (n)q n q 4 +q 7 +q 9 +q 8 +q 40 +q 43 +q 5 +q 55 +q 64 +q 67 +q 76 + H(,n)q n G 3, (z) (mod 3). n (mod 3) On the other hand, let h(d) = H(,D) be the class number of Q( D). It is known that for D < 0, h(d) = B,( (apart from D = 3 and 4) (for example, see [7]). Thus, D ) we have β k (D) B,( D ) h( D) (mod 3), for a fundamental discriminant D > such that D (mod 3). Now let m and N be positive integers satisfying the condition: (**) If an odd prime p is a common divisor of m and N, then p N and p m. 8 D. CHOI AND Y. CHOIE Since N (x,,3) 9 x for x (see Proposition. in [3]), for odd integers k 7 8π we have (3.9) { fundamental discriminants D 0 < D < x and 3 β k (D)} 6π ǫ x. From now on, suppose that k is even, and that d k > or k = 0. Let (3.0) Ψ k+ (z) := (4z)R k (z)θ(z) = α k (n)q n for k > 0 and n= (3.) Remark 3.. The argument given in [[0], p. 86 bottom] in the case where k is even and k (mod 3) is not correct, since it would require that all the coefficients of δ k 4 are 3-integral which in general is not the case. 4. Conclusion In thispaper, we extend the result in [0] tothe case when k is any integer, in particular when k is odd. So, we obtain that, for each integer k such that dims k, there is a normalized Hecke eigenform F in S k satisfying N F (x) x (x ). We conclude this paper with the following remark:
