Hydrographical Surveying of the Subaqueous Delta Plain of the River Rhine at Lake Constance Erwin Heine Institute of Surveying BOKU University Vienna, AUSTRIA Content Introduction Universität für Bodenkultur Wien - Alpenrhein: Erosion - sedimentation - Objectives of the monitoring Hydrographic measurement - Methodology - Resulting seabed DTM 2008 Determination of the sediment distribution - Adjustment of the data using sediment core samples - Volume calculation by difference DTMs 1999-2008 Marrakech, Morocco, 18 22 May 2011 1

Introduction: Alpenrhein Introduction: Alpenrhein Marrakech, Morocco, 18 22 May 2011 2

Introduction: Alpenrhein / erosion Alpine river with huge suspension load due to - soil erosion: rain catchment area of 7 tributaries; ~ 6.000 km 2 - rock erosion: glaciers / snow Year 1900: flood protection: displacement of the river mouth Introduction: Alpenrhein / sedimentation / delta forming Marrakech, Morocco, 18 22 May 2011 3

Introduction: Alpenrhein / sedimentation / delta forming 1930 1949 River channel extended into Lake Constance by lengthening its levees to avoid the sedimentation of the bays surrounding the alluvial delta Objectives of the hydrographic surveying undertaken since 1911 approximately every ten years 1. To monitor the sedimentation process 2. To verify the effectiveness of undertaken embankment dam constructions due to the sediment distribution in the lake: - location - amount 3. Campaign 2008: Obtain base data for hydraulic / numeric 2D-modelling Marrakech, Morocco, 18 22 May 2011 4

Methodology Single-beam echosounding - along predefined survey lines (1.000 km; area of 92 sqkm) - for comparability of the depth measurements taken in former campaigns - Multi frequency (210/38/15 khz) for sediment thickness calculations Multi-beam echosounding - High end level (equipment & staff) - 100% overlapping of the swath to ensure quality - Zero (reference) measurement for future MBS activities Map of the lakebed resulting from of the 2008 survey Marrakech, Morocco, 18 22 May 2011 5

True-to-detail digital terrain model of the subaqueous delta plain of the Rhine Delta plain with dredging holes in the river bed Marrakech, Morocco, 18 22 May 2011 6

3) Determining the sediment distribution by means of comparing the models from 1999 and 2008 Uncertainty in 1999 depth calculation Theoreticaly calculated value for sound speed correction in 1999: 10-30m 1433 >30m 1426 Marrakech, Morocco, 18 22 May 2011 7

Sediment core sample collections (red dots) Adjustment of the DTM of 1999 uncertainty concerning the sound speed correction of 1999 Marrakech, Morocco, 18 22 May 2011 8

Adjustment of the DTM of 1999 height adjustment uncertainty concerning the sound speed correction of 1999 Difference DTM of the lakebed surveys 1999-2008 Deposition or erosion of sediments 15 million m 3 for the area at the mouth of the Rhine Marrakech, Morocco, 18 22 May 2011 9

Outlook: MBS & Hydraulic modelling Investigations on redirecting flows and sediments during floods through levee breaches Lake sediment outside of the levee breach after (a) 7 minutes, (b) (b) 25 minutes, (c) (c) 68 minutes, (d) (d) 102 minutes - final status (Laboratory of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Glaciology Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) Universität für Bodenkultur Wien Institute of Surveying, Remote Sensing and Land Information Erwin Heine Peter Jordan-Strasse 82, A-1190 Vienna Tel.: +43 1 47654-5104, Fax: +43 1 47654-5142 erwin.heine@boku.ac.at, http://ivfl.boku.ac.at Marrakech, Morocco, 18 22 May 2011 10
