TOWARDS A GOOD DEFIITIO OF ALGEBRAICALLY OVERTWISTED FRÉDÉRIC BOURGEOIS AD KLAUS IEDERKRÜGER arxiv:0709.345v [math.sg] 2 Sep 2007 Abstract. Symplectic field theory SFT is a collection of homology theories that provide invariants for contact manifolds. We will give a proof that vanishing of any one of either contact homology, rational SFT or full SFT are equivalent. We call a manifold for which these theories vanish algebraically overtwisted. This preprint is part of a longer article in which we will show that any PS overtwisted manifold is algebraically overtwisted. In dimension 3, this has already been proved for overtwisted manifolds by Eliashberg and Yau [Yau06]. The correct definition of algebraically overtwisted should be the strongest contact invariant that is not able to distinguish overtwisted contact manifolds unfortunately it is unknown whtat the correct definition of overtwisted is in dimension 5 and higher. Theorem. Let M, α be a contact manifold with a non degenerate contact form. All of the following statements are equivalent: i The contact homology of M, α vanishes. ii The rational SFT of M, α vanishes. iii The SFT of M, α vanishes. With this theorem, we define Definition. A contact manifold M, α is called algebraically overtwisted, if any of the three homologies above vanishes. All of the three invariants above are homologies of different differential graded algebras with a element, i.e. Definition. A differential graded algebra A, is a graded algebra, which has a boundary operator : A A such that 2 = 0 and which satisfies the graded Leibniz rule a b = a b + a a b. The vanishing results in this article are all based on the following easy lemma. Remark. Let A, be a differential graded algebra with, and denote the homology over that algebra by H A,. The homology vanishes if and only if is an exact element, i.e. if there is an element a A such that a =. Proof. The element is closed, because = = + = 2, hence it is obvious that has to be exact for the homology to vanish. On the other hand, if there was an element a A such that a =, then the whole homology has to vanish, because if b A was a cycle, then b = b = a b = a b a a b = a b. Our proof of the main theorem is based on using algebraic properties and exploiting that the contact homology algebra embeds naturally into both the rational SFT algebra and the full SFT algebra. In particular the elements all coincide under these inclusions. Before starting to give the proof, we will briefly repeat how the algebras are defined, and what the boundary operators are see [EGH00]. Let M, α be a 2n dimensional contact manifold with non degenerate contact form and denote the first Chern class of the symplectic vector bundle ξ = kerα, dα by c ξ. Then one can choose a submodule R { A H 2 M, Z c ξ A = 0 }
2 F. BOURGEOIS AD K. IEDERKRÜGER to construct the group ring Q [ H 2 M, Z/R ], whose elements will be written as k j= c je Aj, where c j Q and A j H 2 M, Z/R. Different choices of R may lead to different SFT invariants. We define a grading by c e A = 2 c ξ A. ow introduce an arbitrary total order on the set of closed Reeb orbits, and associate to every closed Reeb orbit γ the abstract graded variables q γ and p γ. A convenient short hand notation is to regard sequences I = i k k with only finitely many non zero elements, and to denote by q I the monomial q i γ q i where is large enough to capture all non vanishing elements of I. Similarly p I will denote the monomial p i γ p i. Finally, let I be the number of non zero components in the sequence I, and CI be the combinatorial integer CI = I! i! i! κ i γ κ i again for large enough. We denote by κ γ the multiplicity of the closed Reeb orbit γ. Contact homology. The algebra A CH of contact homology is generated by polynomials in the q γ s with coefficients in Q [ H 2 M, Z/R ], i.e., we can write every element as a finite sum where each term f k is of the form f = K f k, k= f k = c k e A k q I k with every c k e A k Q [ H 2 M, Z/R ] and I k = i j,k is a sequence of the type described above. j The grading for each such monomial is given by f k CH = CZγ j + n 3 i j,k 2 c ξ A k. j= To compute the Conley-Zehnder index CZγ, we need to choose a fixed trivialization of ξ along the closed Reeb orbit γ. To do this in a unified way, choose a basis A,..., A s of H M, Z for H M, Z with torsion, we refer to [EGH00, Section 2.9.] and for each element A j a closed path ψ j representing A j. Trivialize ξ along ψ j in an arbitrary way, and choose for every closed Reeb orbit γ, a surface Σ γ bounding γ and the corresponding combination of ψ j s that represent [γ] H M, Z, then use Σ γ to extend the trivialization of ξ from the ψ j s to γ. The sum of monomials f = c e A q i γ q i, g = de B q j γ q j we assume to be large enough to include all non zero terms of both sequences I = i k k and J = j k k is formal, and the multiplication of f and g gives fg = cde A+B q i γ q i q j γ q j, where we still have to permute the q variables to get a monomial in normal form. For this, we impose supercommutativity q γ q γ = γ γ q γ q γ. The boundary on this algebra A CH is defined by q γ = n A I γ CI ea q I, A,I where the sum runs over all integer valued sequences I and all homology classes A. The rational number n A I γ is the count of the 0 dimensional components of MA 0 γ; γi,...,γi /R, i.e., of the moduli space of holomorphic spheres with one top puncture γ, and i j bottom punctures that converge to the orbit γ j for every j with j. Every puncture is given an asymptotic marker. We only count in n A I γ spheres that represent the element A H 2M/R. More explicitely, we attach to the holomorphic sphere at every puncture γ the corresponding surface Σ γ. This way, we get a homology class in H 2 M, because the top and bottom punctures represent the same element in the first homology group. Effectively, the sum in the definition of the boundary operator is finite, because q γ gives an energy bound on all curves we need to take into account. For products extend the differential according to the graded Leibniz rule, i.e., fg = f g + f f g.
TOWARDS A GOOD DEFIITIO OF ALGEBRAICALLY OVERTWISTED 3 Rational SFT. The algebra A rsft of rational SFT can be interpreted as a certain Poisson algebra, but since we are only interested in showing that its homology vanishes, we will only briefly describe what its elements are, and how the boundary operator looks like. The elements of A rsft can be written as f = I + f I +qp I+, where the sum runs over all finite sequences I + of integers, the coefficients f I +q A CH are elements in the contact homology algebra that depend on I +, or said differently the elements of A rsft are formal power series in p variables with coefficients in the contact homology algebra A CH. The grading of a monomial is given by c e A q I p I+ rsft = c e A q I CH + n 3 CZγj i + j. The product between variables is supercommutative q γ q ψ = qγ q ψ q ψ q γ, q γ p ψ = qγ p ψ p ψ q γ and p γ p ψ = pγ p ψ p ψ p γ. The boundary operator d h is defined on a single q variable by the formula and on a p variable respectively by j= d h q γ = na I +,I q γ CI + CI ea q I p I+ d h p γ = na I +,I p γ CI + CI ea q I p I+. We are summing over all combinations of monomials e A q I p I+. The rational number n A I +,I q γ is the count of the 0 dimensional components of M A i 0 γ, γ +,..., γ i+ ; γ i,..., γ i /R, i.e., of the moduli space of holomorphic spheres with a top puncture converging to γ, and i + k top and i k bottom punctures that converge to the orbit γ k for any k with k. As before, all punctures have an asymptotic marker, and the holomorphic spheres represent in the same way as above an element A H 2 M/R. The number n A I +,I p γ is defined similarly and counts the 0 dimensional components of M A i 0 γ +,...,γ i+ ; γ, γ i,..., γ i /R, i.e., the same moduli space as above, but having γ as a bottom puncture. In particular, note that by the maximum principle, there cannot be a holomorphic curve without a top puncture, and so d h p γ cannot contain non zero terms without p coordinates. For arbitrary elements in A rsft extend the operator d h by using the graded Leibniz rule. Full SFT. The algebra of symplectic field theory A SFT is composed of formal power series of the form F = f g,i +qp I + g, g=0 I + as above f g,i +q is an element in the contact homology algebra, and is a new formal variable of degree 2 n 3, so that the total degree of a monomial e A q I+ p I g is given by c e A q I+ p I g SFT = e A q I+ p I rsft + 2g n 3. The commutator relation between two q variables or two p variables is identical to the one of rational SFT, but for mixed terms, we require the supersymmetric relation { [q γ, p ψ ] := q γ p ψ qγ pψ κ γ if γ = ψ p ψ q γ = 0 otherwise. One way to regard this relation is by representing p γ as the derivation operator κ γ / q γ.
4 F. BOURGEOIS AD K. IEDERKRÜGER Define now an element H by H = na,g I +,I CI + CI ea q I p I+ g. We are adding over all possible finite sequences I +, I, all homology classes A H 2 M/R, and every genus g 0. The number n A,g I +,I counts 0 dimensional moduli spaces M A i g γ +,...,γ i+ ; γ, γ i,...,γ i /R of genus g curves. The boundary operator on this algebra is defined by d H F := [H, F] = HF F FH.. Proof of Theorem We will first prove the equivalence i ii. Assume rational SFT vanishes, i.e., we find an element f A rsft such that d h f =. This element can be written as f = I + f I +qp I+ with f I + being an element of the contact homology algebra A CH depending on I +. Regard just the first term f 0 = f 0 qp 0 dropping all terms with non zero powers of p variables. It is clear that f 0 lies in the contact homology algebra A CH, and we will show that in contact homology f 0 = holds. ote that the boundary operator d h could by the Leibniz rule, in principle, decrease the p degree of monomials by one, but for this the term in d h p γ corresponding to the moduli spaces M A 0 ; γ, γ i,..., γ i would have to be non empty, but by the maximum principle holomorphic curves without top punctures do not exist. So it follows that the terms without p variables in d h f are also included in d h f 0. The contact homology boundary operator differs on A CH A rsft from d h in that it does not count the higher order p terms, but the zero order terms are all contained, hence f 0 = d h f 0 = as we wanted to show. For the opposite implication, namely i ii, assume that f 0 is an element in the contact homology algebra A CH such that f 0 =. This f 0 canonically embeds into the rational SFT algebra A rsft, where we can compute its boundary d h f 0 = g. The element g A rsft captures all terms of non zero degree in the p variables. It is always a closed element, because d h g = d h d h f = 0. ow compute the formal inverse of g. It is given by g := g k, where we set g 0 =. This object is well defined in A rsft, because g has non zero p degree, so that in every fixed p degree g is only composed of finitely many terms, and in particular g is a formal power series. It is obvious that d h g = 0. Define an element f A rsft by It easily follows that f := f 0 g. d h f = d h f 0 g = d h f 0 g f 0 d h g = g g =, just as we wanted to show. We will briefly sketch now the proof of i iii: Assume first that F is an element in A SFT such that d H F =. We obtain a well defined projection π : A SFT A CH by dropping any term that contains a non zero power of p or variables. Denote the projection of F by f, and compute f. ote that d H never decreases the power of, and the only way to decrease the power of p variables is by raising the power of. Hence it follows that = π d H F = π d H f. Finally, we remark that π d H counts exactly the terms appearing in the definition of, so that f =.
TOWARDS A GOOD DEFIITIO OF ALGEBRAICALLY OVERTWISTED 5 For the opposite implication, assume that f A CH is such that f =. We can easily embed the contact homology algebra A CH into the algebra of symplectic field theory A SFT, since the commutating relations for only q variables are identical in both spaces. As we said above, dropping all terms with non zero p or variables the differential d H coincides on A CH with the boundary operator from contact homology. Thus d H f = f G = G, where G only contains monomials with a non zero power of or of p. The formal inverse of G is given by Gk. It is well defined and closed, and by defining F = f G k we obtain a primitive of, because d f H G k = Hf G k + f G k H so that the homology of SFT vanishes. = Hf + fh G k + H f G k + G k H = [H, f] G k f d H G k = G G k =, Acknowledgments.
