Basic Cell Organelle 5 th grade, Science Standards/Framework (Common Core, NAEYC, Mid-level.): LS.2.5.3 Describe the similarities of basic cell functions in all organisms. Vocabulary Cell (Plasma) Membrane Nucleus Cytoplasm Vacuole Cell Wall Mitochondria Chloroplasts Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosomes Description Semi-permeable membrane surrounding the cell. Sperical, often in the center of the cell, bounded by a membrane (skin). Semi-fluid between the cell membrane and the nucleus. Membrane bound sack in the plant cell. Surrounds a plant cell. Shaped like a football or a peanut in the cell. Green, similar in shape to a mitochondria. White, maze-like cell part surrounding the nucleus Tiny, round organelles that float around in the cytoplasm or attaches to the Endoplasmic Reticulum. Golgi Apparatus (Body) Stacks of saucer-like membranes Function "Traffic-cop". It selects what enters the cell. Cell brain or the "computer" of the cell. Contains information to make the cell work. Jelly-like substance within the cell that holds up the other cell parts in the cells. It's the "warehouse" in a cell that stores food and waste products. It supports and creates the shape of a cell. Called the "powerhouse of the cell" because it creates energy for the cell. It is the spot of photosynthesis where energy is made for plant cells. It is used to transport food or other materials from one part of the cell to another. It creates protein. Stores/Transport with the Endoplasmic Reticulum to transport materials across the cell. Theme/Series of Lessons (if Not applicable, put N/A. If it is part of a series, of lessons, tell me, give a BRIEF description of the overall and tell me where this particular lesson fits): This lesson fits after the concept that living and nonliving things are differentiated by cells. Cells are the basic function of all living things. Time (is this a 1 day 50 minute lesson, 5 day 1 hour lesson, once a week over a month lesson.): Time: 45-50 minutes What do the students already know? (This could be the Intro or they have learned information before starting this lesson): Students should know: Cells are the most basic form of life Building Blocks of Life Everything that is alive is made of CELLS. All living things contain at least one cell. Cells are the basic units of structure and function of life processes. Cells come from other cells of the same kind. Objective (What are the students going to accomplish): Materials: Procedure: Students will be able to describe the similarities of basic cell functions in all organisms. Vocabulary, photostory, paper, pencil, worksheet below, assessment 1. Teacher will review the cell theory and the prior lesson: 2. Cell basic unit of living things. 3. Teacher will introduce cell organelles with the Photostory 4. Teacher will discuss cells organelle function with an analogy to a city. Basic Cell Organelle 2

A Brief Description Of The Entire Lesson - Plus Any Additional Information to be Included: The purpose of this lesson is to describe the similarities of basic cell functions in all organisms to the students and to assess the students understanding of the material presented. (I should be able to see and understand your entire lesson by reading this. Remember, Technology is not the lesson. It enhances the lesson) Basic Cell Organelle 6
