Clues for Flavor from rare lepton and quark decays University of Southampton WIN 2015, MPI-K, Heidelberg, 2015/06/10

Based on IdMV, Hiller (JHEP) http://arxiv.org/abs/1503.01084

Clues... RK B (B K µµ) /B (B Kee)

An interesting 2.6σ hint RKLHCb = 0.745 ±0.090 0.074 ±0.036 1 GeV2 q 2 < 6 GeV2 2.6 σ from universality (SM) Ratio cancels out theoretical uncertainties If verified, BSM in quark FCNC linked with lepton sector (1)

New physics BSM interpretation Hiller, Schmaltz (PRD) http://arxiv.org/abs/1408.1627 Nice slides by Hiller: https://indico.cern.ch/event/345526/session/1/ contribution/3/material/slides/0.pdf Model independent analysis: constrains Wilson coeffs. can be realized by (this talk) See also talks by Fuentes and several talks on Friday: Descotes-Genon, Heeck, Hernando Morata, Vicente Other works referenced in the paper http://arxiv.org/abs/1503.01084

New physics and flavor In SM, flavor only in Yukawa couplings: LH = Y u H(QuR ) Y d H(QdR ) Y e H(LeR ) + h.c. (2) Probe only masses and CKM: Yu Yu and Yd Yd (ur, dr are SU(2) singlets) New physics can help us learn about flavor Leptoquarks are great examples of this: L = λ (QL) + h.c. Different processes probe columns and rows of λ matrix (3)

LL and RL leptoquarks We consider SU(2) triplet leptoquark (3, 3): LLL = λ (QL) + h.c. (4) Or SU(2) doublet leptoquark (3, 2): LRL = λ (dr L) + h.c. (5)

λ and RK λde λdµ λdτ λ λse λsµ λsτ λbe λbµ λbτ (6) RK probes e, µ columns, s, b rows: 0.7.Re[λse λ be λsµ λ bµ ] (24TeV)2. 1.5 M2 (7)

λ and other constraints Conservative with direct collider detection: M > 1 TeV Bs mixing from box diagram probes different combination: (λse λ be + λsµ λ bµ + λsτ λ bτ )2. M2 (12 TeV)2 RK λ2 /M 2 vs. λ4 /M 2 Combined: M < O(50) TeV, in reach of future colliders (8)

Selected flavor data

COMET, MEG, Mu2e, Mu3e Future LFV sensitivity probes the Leptoquark parameter space COMET and Mu2e to 10 16 sensitivity See talks by Litchfield, Papa

Data-Driven The funniest thing is I didn t even do the caption myself: http://www.setheliot.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/ 02/image2.png

Simplest data-driven patterns RK probes e, µ columns: 0.7.Re[λse λ be λsµ λ bµ ] λ[e] (24TeV)2. 1.5 M2 Lepton flavor isolation patterns: λde 0 0 0 λdµ 0 λse 0 0, λ[µ] 0 λsµ 0 λbe 0 0 0 λbµ 0 (9) (10)

Hierarchical data-driven pattern Given that fermion-higgs Yukawa are hierarchical natural to expect a hierarchical λ pattern: ρd κ ρd ρd λ[ρκ] λ0 ρκ ρ ρ κ 1 1 LFV arises naturally (11)

Driving λ[ρκ] with data λ[ρκ] ρd κ ρd λ0 ρκ ρ κ 1 ρd ρ 1 (12) current flavor data implies: ρd. 0.02, κ. 0.5, ρd /ρ. 1.6, 10 4. ρ. 1, κ/ρ. 0.5 κ from µ eγ, ρd from rare K decays ρd κ from µ e conversion in near future (13) (14)

Correlating b-decays and LFV B(B K µ± e ) ' 3 10 8 κ2 1 RK 0.23 2, 1 RK 2 B(B Ke τ ) ' 2 10 κ, 0.23 2 ± 8 1 RK B(B K µ τ ) ' 2 10, 0.23 2 1 RK 2 12 κ B(µ eγ) ' 2 10, 0.23 ρ2 2 1 RK 2 14 κ B(τ eγ) ' 4 10, 0.23 ρ2 1 RK 2 14 1 B(τ µγ) ' 3 10. 0.23 ρ2 ± 8 2 (15) (16) (17) (18) (19) (20) (21)

Leptoquarks and rare Higgs decays So e.g. for λ[ρκ] we have: yeτ κ, yµτ yeµ κ. yµτ (22) B (h µτ ) hinted by CMS: too large to be from leptoquark loop See also talks by Dery, Heeck, and Schumacher

Fermion masses and mixing from flavor symmetries explain fermion masses and mixing Take subgroup of U(3)n (accidental in SM) Charge SM fermions under it e.g. Le, Lµ, Lτ Li 3 of SU(3)F Then flavon φ 3 gets VEV hφi breaking SU(3)F LH = H(φi Li )(φj erj ) + h.c. Y ij hφi ihφj i (23)

Linking flavor structures of Higgs and Leptoquark Y Y (hφi) implies λ λ(hφi) that explain Y patterns lead to theory-driven λ patterns that link Higgs and Leptoquarks Several theory-driven patterns match the data-driven patterns

SU(3)F example Based on: IdMV, Ross (NPB) IdMV (JHEP) http://arxiv.org/abs/1111.3952 IdMV, Ross (JHEP) http://arxiv.org/abs/1203.6636 Flavon with VEV hφ23 i = (0, b, b) Coupling as (φi23 Qi )(φj23 Lj ) 0 0 0 λ[ 2] = λ0 b2 0 1 1 0 1 1 A very predictive special limit of λ[ρκ] (24)

A4 example Based on: Altarelli, Feruglio (NPB) Altarelli, Meloni (JPG) http://arxiv.org/abs/0905.0620 IdMV, Merlo (JHEP) http://arxiv.org/abs/1011.6662 IdMV, Pidt (JHEP) http://arxiv.org/abs/1211.5370 Flavon with VEV hφi = (u, 0, 0) Coupling as Q(φj Lj ) (quarks trivial under A4 ) λ[e] λde 0 0 λse 0 0 λbe 0 0 Leptoquark lepton flavor isolation (25)

Summary Clues for Flavor from rare lepton and quark decays Clues from rare decays may be first glimpse of BSM Leptoquarks are appealing new physics scenario Assuming RK obtain data-driven patterns for λ Matched by flavor symmetries theory-driven patterns
