Claimer & Disclaimer The present lectures are still in preparation and are given as a draft to the students for their convenience so that they can better take notes and study. Being preliminaries and in course of preparation there may be typos, mistakes and gaps. Any help from the students will be welcome. At the moment, since I am writing them, the notes are limited to the essential. Later on I will add in writing comments and discussion. The lectures have intellectual property. They can be used solely for the purpose of the course, any other use is forbidden and would offend the intellectual property. Any contribution by the students, or by anybody else, that will contribute to improving the content of the lectures will be welcomed. I also would appreciate suggestions and addition. The students could point out about topics they would like to have developed in more details or about topics that at the moment are not mentioned at all. Thank yoou 2

Organization & Acknowledgments Some of the slides I present are due to the student Lea Giordano. Those few I used were part of a presentation the student prepared for the exam. The full presentation by Lea Giordano can be found in the web under my own Home Page in the students presentations section. As it has been done since 1985 the course will be organized as follows: We will meet for 2 full hours twice a week. At the end of the course the students will lecture on a topic selected in collaboration with the teacher. This lecture will not be graded. The exam can be given at any time after taking an appointment with me. As part of the exam the student will discuss a topics from a text book or from the literature. This topics is generally the same the student presented at the end of the class and it is appreciated if a written report or, better a power point presentation is given. Copy of the lectures will be given to the students or can be found in my home page. The students elect a secretary with whom I can comunicate for all the matters related to the Extragalactic Astronomy Lectures. 3
