MARKUSH DATA ACCESS Markush structure data available alongside corresponding specific compounds & DWPI records Load into ChemAxon s JChem database tools Resulting solution gives access to full chemistry & patents dataset data can be searched, enumerated & integrated into the customer s own systems & workflows 4

JCHEM MARKUSH BENEFITS Structure data displayed alongside high quality patent summaries from DWPI includes abstract, patent assignee, patent family, activities & mechanisms of action Time saving visualisation and enumeration capabilities enable fast relevance analysis of hit structures/patents Enumerated structures are in standard format allowing easy integration with other chemistry datasets/tools

WHAT YOU CAN DO IN INSTANT JCHEM Review specific DWPI records using the form view for inventions Use enumeration to better understand the range of structures covered by a Markush claim and potentially identify white space around it Carry out structure queries on the Markush or Specific compound data base Optionally combine these with searches of the bibliographic fields or of the DWPI abstract Review all the Markush structures found in a Markush structure query answer set Use enumeration to better understand your answer set Review the specific compounds found in an answer set

INSTANT JCHEM RECORD VIEW Use tabs to see the DWPI abstract Double click on structure to view it in more detail and enumerate it For a specific DWPI record you can see the Markush structures, specific compounds, bibliographic data and DWPI abstract

DWPI ABSTRACT VIEW PART 1

DWPI ABSTRACT VIEW PART 2

MORE DETAILED VIEW OF THE STRUCTURE The structure menu gives access to Markush enumeration

ENUMERATION OPTIONS Select type of enumeration (random or sequential and maximum number of structures to be enumerated

ENUMERATED STRUCTURES The enumerated structures can be exported for further analysis

SEARCHING ON INSTANT JCHEM Enter search terms in boxes to search bibliographic or abstract fields Double click in the structure box to draw and save a structure query

View your results as a list of inventions

OR AS A LIST OF MARKUSH STRUCTURES Double click on a structure to view it in more detail Key bibliographic data and abstract fields relating to the structure appear here

SELECT A STRUCTURE TO ENUMERATE IT From the chemistry menu you can choose to enumerate the structure

THIS HELPS YOU UNDERSTAND WHY YOU GOT THE HITS Select Markush reduction according to the hit

MARKUSH REDUCTION CONTINUED Query structure shown here Highlighting shows where the matches are

ONE STRUCTURE IN DETAIL

WHY SEARCH PATENTS In order to be patentable in the US, an invention has to be NEW, USEFUL and UNOBVIOUS. Therefore, the patent literature is full of useful ideas, but not necessarily theoretical ones Patent information is current, because (in most of the world) disclosure before patent application renders the invention unpatentable. Studies have shown that 70-90% of the information in patents is never published anywhere else. The technical content of a patent is often available in your local language, because protection in your country must be obtained in your country s patent office. 20

USE CASES Novelty searching by IP departments Easy assessment of structural proximity of query structure to hit Markush Screening of new structures against existing IP Potential use in white-space identification, patent busting etc. Creation of libraries of specifics for use in other systems
