Captain Igneous Travels Through the Rock Cycle By: Kimberly Stephens Graphics by: Scrappin Doodles Fonts by: Dafont.com

We all know what a hot fiery chamber a volcano is. With lava flowing from the very core of the earth, it is not a place that us humans would want to spend our time, but for Captain Igneous, it was home. 1

Captain Igneous spent his days in the Volcano surfing through the waves of lava and flying around the Volcano s thick walls. Captain Igneous was very powerful, and very smart, but he had one little problemhe had never traveled outside of the volcano. 2

Captain Igneous knew that a rock hero like him should travel the world and use his powers for good, but Captain Igneous could not figure out how to get out of the volcano. 3

One day, Captain Igneous finally decided to try his absolute hardest to get out of the volcano. He pushed the lava as hard as he could toward the top of the volcano. He pushed and pushed until finally, the top of the volcano exploded open, sending Captain Igneous shooting out. 4

Captain Igneous summersaulted through the fresh air until he hit the ground with a thud. This world is quite strange! he thought as he looked around. Even the air in this world was different than the air inside the volcano; this air moved a lot faster as it blew across his body. This must be wind Captain Igneous thought again to himself. 5

The wind blew harder and harder and Captain Igneous grew uncomfortable. Suddenly, water began falling from the sky. Rain? Captain Igneous asked himself, as he tried to shield his body from the unpleasant feeling. The wind kept blowing and the rain kept falling, and Captain Igneous grew more and more uncomfortable in this new world. Before he knew it, his once powerful body was crumbling beneath him. 6

Captain Igneous body continued to erode, or break away, until he was a small pile of pieces on the ground. Oh, No! Captain Igneous exclaimed, How will I ever be strong again!. Don t worry! a sweet voice echoed through the air. I will help you, you poor pile of sediment! A fairy floated down next to Captain Igneous. She scooped up his pieces and compacted, or squeezed, them together. 7

Captain Igneous was once again whole, but he didn t feel quite the same. You are no longer Captain Igneous! the fairy godmother said. You are now Sedimentary Man. You must find a way to get back to your old self in order to gain back your strength and power! The new Sedimentary Man looked at his different body, it looked like a bunch of pieces just stuck together. It was bumpy and lumpy and not quite what he was used to. 8

I miss my old self! thought Sedimentary Man. I want to be Captain Igneous again! I want to go back to my warm volcano home. Sedimentary Man wandered the earth and decided to make his way into the crust of the earth. If I go underground, maybe I can find my way back into a volcano! Sedimentary Man hoped. The farther Sedimentary Man traveled the hotter it got. I must be getting close! he decided, and he kept on moving. Farther and farther he went until he was deep into the earth. The dirt above him felt so heavy, and pressed down hard on top of him. 9

Sedimentary Man realized that his body was starting to look differently. The pieces were starting to squeeze together even more, and began to blend into each other, making him look smoother. The pressure of the earth on top of him weighed him down, and his body bent and curved. Sedimentary Man suddenly heard a voice above him You are getting closer! it said, and he realized it was his fairy godmother. You have now made yourself into Mr. Metamorphic! Just a few more steps and you will be back to your normal Igneous self! 10

The now Mr. Metamorphic grew excited. He decided to keep moving in the earth s crust, not wanting to miss his chance to get back to his old self. The heat got so intense that Mr. Metamorphic started to feel a little squishy. Am I melting?! he wondered, kind of worried. Mr. Metamorphic was melting, and before he knew it, he was a big pile of steaming magma. I must get out of this heat! said Mr. Metamorphic, and he squirmed and slid in his magma body to reach a cooler place. As Mr. Metamorphic made his way up in the earth s crust, he began to finally cool, and he could feel his body starting to harden. 11

Mr. Metamorphic continued to cool and harden, and to his surprise, he began to feel more like his old self! He looked down once again at his body, and realized that he could not see any specific pieces, or blends of pieces in his body, but instead he was one full sleek piece of. IGNEOUS! Captain Igneous was back, and he could not be more excited. 12

Captain Igneous felt his strength returning to him, and he flew as hard as he could up through the earth s crust. He did not stop until he found himself back into the volcano that he had missed so dearly. Captain Igneous was home and happy, and he surfed and flew around his fiery surroundings. The fairy godmother looked down on him, happy that he had made his way back to where he wanted to be. 13

Only she knew what would happen next. He will get bored in that volcano, and when he does, this cycle will start all over again! she laughed to herself. And she was right. 14

Erode- When wind or rain breaks down rock or soil. Compacted- Squeezed together Igneous- Magma- A type of rock that is formed when magma hardens. This rock is smooth.
