Science (K) 2 nd Lesson Aim: To learn about the four seasons of the year and the types of weather in each. Objectives: Terms: seasons, spring, summer, fall, autumn and winter, deciduous, evergreen, weather, humid, temperature, thermometer, clouds, wind, rain, mist, rainbow, snow, flurry, snowflake, blizzard, storms, hail. Material: A year is divided into four parts called seasons. The seasons are spring, summer, fall and winter. Another name for fall is autumn. Sensory: (S) Write S E A S O N. Spell S P R I N G. Questions: The year is divided into four parts called. hours or seasons The name of one season is. winter or Wednesday Material: In many places, spring is warm and flowers bloom. Next comes a hot summer, a cool fall and then a cold winter. In other places, seasons change in other ways. But wherever you live, the year still cycles through the seasons every year. Sensory: (S) Spell S U M M E R. Write W I N T E R. Questions: There are seasons. The seasons cycle ten or four every. year or week

Science (K) 2 nd Lesson page 2 Material: In some parts of our country, the leaves on many trees and bushes turn from green to red, gold and brown, and then fall off. This happens in the season called fall. Question: In some parts of our country, the leaves on many trees turn colors and then. This happens in the season called. spring or fall fall off or sparkle Material: Trees and bushes whose leaves fall off are called deciduous. This means falling off. These trees grow new leaves in the spring. Maples, apple and oak trees are all deciduous trees. Sensory Activity: (S) Write D E C I D U O U S. Spell M A P L E. (T) Show a picture of a maple, apple and oak tree. Question: Trees and bushes that lose their leaves are called. Deciduous means. deciduous or empty growing or falling off One deciduous tree is the. maple or pine Material: Some trees and bushes stay green all through the winter. They lose some of their leaves every year, but because they stay green forever, we call this kind of plant evergreen. Pine trees and holly bushes are evergreens.

Science (K) 2 nd Lesson page 3 Sensory: (S) Write E V E R G R E E N. Spell P I N E. (T) Show a picture of a pine tree and a holly bush. Question: Trees and bushes that stay green all through the winter are called trees. One type of evergreen is a bright or evergreen. holly bush or apple tree Material: The weather is what it is like outside. When we talk about the weather, the first thing we talk about is the temperature. The temperature tells us if it is cold, cool, warm or hot. Sensory: (S) Spell W E A T H E R. Write T E M P E R A T U R E. Questions: The weather is what it is like. in the kitchen or outside The thing that tells us if it is cold, cool, warm or hot is the. temperature or clouds Question: The temperature changes with the seasons. In most places, it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The temperature goes up and down up when it is warmer and down when it is cooler. When the air is moist and sticky, we say it is humid. Sensory: (S) Spell H U M I D.

Science (K) 2 nd Lesson page 4 Question: When the temperature is very hot, it is. winter or summer When the air is moist and sticky outside, we say it is. humid or dry Material: To tell what the temperature is, people use a thermometer. Many thermometers have colored liquid inside a tube. As the temperature goes higher, the liquid rises in the tube. As the temperature goes lower, the liquid goes down in the tube. Sensory: (S) Write T H E R M O M E T E R. (T) Show a picture of a thermometer. Questions: To tell the temperature, people use a. ruler or thermometer Inside a thermometer is colored. When the weather liquid or sand gets cold and the temperature goes lower, the liquid goes in the tube. up or down Material: Clouds are made of very tiny drops of water or tiny bits of ice. Clouds come in different shapes, sizes and colors. A thick blanket of gray clouds means rain is coming. Sensory: (S) Spell C L O U D. Question: A cloud is made of. tiny bits of water or ice or smoke

Science (K) 2 nd Lesson page 5 Material: Wind is moving air. The wind blows in many directions. Though we can t see the wind, we can see it move the branches of trees. Sensory: (S) Spell W I N D. Question: Wind is moving. Can we see the wind? water or air yes or no Material: Rain falls from the clouds. It can fall in fine droplets, called mist or drizzle. It can come down in a shower or pour down in a heavy rain. Rain soaks into the earth and fills the stream and lakes and helps the plants to grow. Sensory: (S) Spell R A I N. Question: Rain falls from. A light rain is called a. trees or clouds mist or map Material: Sometimes after a rain, you can see a rainbow. A rainbow is bands of color formed when the sun shines through raindrops in the sky. Sensory: (S) Write R A I N B O W. (T) Show a picture of a rainbow. Questions: A rainbow is bands of color formed by the sun shining through in the sky. wind or raindrops

Science (K) 2 nd Lesson page 6 Material: In winter, if the temperature drops low enough, then instead of rain we get snow. When a small amount of snow falls, we call it a snow flurry. If a big snowstorm dumps a great deal of snow, we call it a blizzard. Each snowflake is different. It is its own beautiful design of tiny ice crystals. Sensory: (S) Spell S N O W. Write B L I Z Z A R D. (T) Show a picture of snowflakes. Question: In winter, when the temperature is very cold, we get. When a great deal of snow falls, we call this a. snow or rain flood or blizzard Each snowflake is made of tiny. ice crystals or candy Material: A storm is a heavy fall of rain with thunder, lightning and strong wind. We should never stay outside during a storm. Sometimes the rain can freeze before it comes down. Then it becomes hail balls of ice that can be as small as peas or as big as golf balls. Sensory: (S) Spell S T O R M. Write H A I L. Question: A heavy rain with thunder and lightning is called a. If the rain freezes before it comes down, it becomes blizzard or storm balls of ice called. hail or cubes
