1 The Nodes (Rahu / Ketu) Divine Confusion By Sam Geppi Image credit http://content.esotericteaching.org/jyotish/images/nodes.jpg From BPHS: from Rahu that of Varah (Pig) and from Ketu that of Meen (Fish) occurred ~ Vishnu Avatars Rahu and Ketu form the Grah Army. ~ Planetary Cabinet Description of Rahu and Ketu. Rahu has smoky appearance with a blue mix physique. He resides in forests and is horrible. He is windy in temperament and is intelligent. Ketu is akin to Rahu. ~ Description of Grahas Rahu rules the outcaste, while Ketu governs mixed caste. ~ Castes Rahu denotes multi-coloured clothes and Ketu rags. Lead and blue gem belong to Rahu and Ketu. ~ Guidance for Remedies From Phala Deepika Sloka 33 : Rahu is black in colour, tall in stature and of a low caste; he has got skin-disease; he is a heretic; he has got hic-cough; he speaks falsehood; he is cunning; he suffers from leprosy; he reviles others and is devoid of intelligence.

2 Sloka 34 : Ketu has a red and fierce look a venomous tongue, and an elevated body; he is armed; he is an outcast of a smoky colour, and is inhaling smoke always; he has bruised limbs; he is lean and is malicious. Sloka 35 : Lead and an old garment belong to Rahu while a mud vessel and a mixed cloth of variegated colour have been allotted to Ketu. Mercury, Saturn and Venus are the friends of Rahu as well as Ketu. Mars is natural to them. The rest are enemies. Myth of the Nodes (From The Ascendant 108 Planets of Vedic Astrology ) The myth of Rahu and Ketu sheds much light on their function and greater possibility. Shortly after the beginning of time, the Gods and demons were in a terrible war over the pot of immortal nectar at the bottom of the Milk Ocean. (A metaphor for The Milky Way) Neither side was making much progress so they decided to join forces and churn the milk ocean to get the pot of nectar, agreeing to share the yield of their joint efforts. Once the nectar was extracted then came the job of distributing it. The Gods, not wanting the nectar to fall into the hands of the demons, devised a plan. Lord Vishnu disguised himself as the enchanting and beautiful Mohini to distribute the nectar. The Gods and Demons were seated on two different sides of an aisle as Mohini distributed the nectar to the Gods only. The demons were too enchanted by her beauty to notice she was not giving them the nectar. However one demon, Rahu, noticed what was happening and disguised himself as a God and managed to get a drink of the nectar. As soon as this happened, the Sun and Moon told Lord Vishnu what was happening and Vishnu returned to his form and let fly his sudarshan and chopped Rahu in half, but only after Rahu managed to take a drink of the nectar. Thus he is immortal, but chopped in half. The head is Rahu and the tail is Ketu. The Head North Node - Rahu Rahu is a head without a body. Everything he comes into contact with he becomes obsessed with, like an immature person or a person with a voracious appetite. Rahu represents material desires that we want to experience, but because he is not a physical planet he operates on the subconscious level. He distorts our perceptions and colors the world according to his desires. He tends to obliterate the essence of things, focusing on their material substance. Rahu obsesses over the things we need to learn so we can eventually be freed of them. There are certain lessons we can only learn in a physical body, in the physical world. Rahu s obsessions indicate those things. All human beings are at least slightly crazy in some way, Rahu shows the area of life where we are unbalanced and obsessed. Rahu keeps us obsessed until we learn detachment from what he is influencing. As such, he represents our most powerful attachments. Losing our higher self to the things of this world is the main reason we suffer in life. Rahu s obsessions bring much suffering as long as we desire experience. However, once we desire liberation, Rahu is incredibly spiritual. Rahu will tend to feel like Saturn in that both of these planets bring stress and fear. The stresses of Saturn are based on the tangible known things in the universe that can go wrong, our health, our income, etc. Rahu feels stress and worry about the many unknown, undeveloped qualities of our mind and experience. His obsessions are all attempts to strengthen the undeveloped part of our

3 consciousness. Ketu is the other half of the demon, the headless body. Where Rahu obsesses over the things of this world, Ketu seeks to be freed from them. Rahu is material and loses the essence of things in their substance. Ketu perceives the essence of things but is unsatisfied with anything substantive in the world. Whereas Rahu shows where we are obsessed to grow and experience new things, Ketu is where we may want to fall back on familiar patterns and become stuck in them. This leads to a familiar sort of disgust and creates a fear of stagnation with the familiar domain of life Ketu is influencing. Ketu brings doubt and a sharp criticism to the areas of life that he sees that result in us looking ever higher to find the truthful answers to them. Yet, as he is eternally unsatisfied, he only notices what is missing from whatever he is influencing; thus the areas of life Ketu influences will be especially hard to work on as we will be filled with our deepest levels of doubt and self-criticism and loathing where Ketu is concerned. The Headless Body The South Node - Ketu Ketu will tend to feel like Mars in that both Ketu and Mars are critical and opinionated. The opinions of Mars are what lead us into conflict over our principles, our weapon of choice, a flowing river of logic. Ketu has the same sharp and focused nature. His criticism is based on past skill and it is where we will fall back on a set of ideas of how things should or should not be. These ideas cut us off to the greater and necessary possibilities that must be considered in order for the karmas with Ketu to be completed. Generally it will be easier to run toward the external, underdeveloped nature of things shown by Rahu rather than face the painful void of what is indicated by Ketu. Ketu can be compared to the disapproving parent within, holding others and ourselves to unrealistic standards of perfection, based on our perceived expertise. Ketu largely shows the coping skills and accompanying criticisms that we learned in childhood. Ketu presides over the absolute aspect of God. He is strict and exacting and sucks the worldly joy out of all he touches, including the things Rahu is obsessed over through house and sign. Both Nodes are fear motivated, Ketu by our past fears and Rahu by the fear of what we do not yet know. Rahu s fears will generally revolve around the external world and other people and Ketu s the inner world and where we are afraid of facing ourselves. Yet there is enormous interplay between them. It may be a useful metaphor to reckon the Nodes as the inner child and the inner parent. Rahu is the immature child within, inexperienced and making the same mistakes over and over again. Ketu is the disapproving parent within, criticizing through past experience. It is the push and pull of Rahu s obsession and innocence and Ketu s doubt and experience that allows the soul to learn the lessons of the Nodal house and sign placement and association through the Grahas. A sharing between these two poles of experience must occur for their be growth in the difficult areas of life they indicate. Astrological Specifics and General Rules Signs - The Nodes Typically do well with Rahu and Ketu in the Gemini / Sagittarius axis (Rahu in Gemini perferred). Rahus desire for Intelligence (Gemini) and Ketus search for one pointed truth (Sagittarius) are well supported here. Also, Taurus/Scorpio axis is good, as Rahu can stabilize and Ketu can go deep. Opposite these placements are tough, and also Rahu / Ketu in the Cancer / Capricorn axis. Rahu in the water signs create a lot of emotional fears (Pisces is not as bad though).

4 Houses Rahu / Ketu in the 1/7 axis is quite disruptive (especially Rahu in 1 st and Ketu in 7 th ). Also Rahu in 4 th or 8 th is can also create quite a lot of fears (4 th ) and inner turmoil (8 th house). Rahu in 10 th and 11 th houses can be very powerful. Discerning Their Effects The Nodes give the result of the planets they join, acting like the ruler, yet mixed with their own nature. The disposition and dingity of the rulers of the nodes are very important to seeing how much intelligence is operating. Powerful and intelligent Nodes shows a person who is highly perceptive and perhaps mystical. Universal Astrology and The Nodes The Nodes are related to the Kundalini, the part of us not in the body. Even when good things come from the nodes we often don't feel so connected to or in control of our mind as the Nodes are called the Lunar Nodes. The Moon is our sense of peace and connection. You can see universal Symbols of the Nodes and the Kundalini throughout history.
