Summary For the Fall 2006 semester, UIUC welcomed 1426 new international students to campus, a 4.1 percent increase from the number of new students who arrived in Fall 2005. The total number of enrolled international students rose by nearly five percent from the previous year for a total of 5146. These students represent 121 countries from around the globe, with the top five countries of South Korea (24%), China (18%), India (12%), Taiwan (8%), and Turkey (3%). Broken down by educational level, the increase in enrollment of international students was greater for undergraduates (6.9%) than for graduate students (4.1%). Seventy-five percent of all international students come from Asia, with 71 percent of those coming from countries in East Asia. However, of all the world regions, Africa saw the greatest percentage jump in enrollment for 2006, increasing by 10.7 percent from last year with the additional 9 students coming from that area of the world. Kazakhstan, in Central Asia, saw the largest jump in enrollment for any single country going from 3 students last Fall to 18 students this Fall, a 500% increase. A majority of the international students are coming to UIUC in order to study in the field of Engineering. Approximately 34 percent are studying within the College of Engineering, and of all the departments on campus, Electrical and Computer Engineering (483; 9.4%) is the most popular. The other top ranking departments in terms of international student enrollment include Computer Science (304; 5.9%), Civil Engineering (227; 4.4%), Accountancy (201; 3.9%), and Mechanical Science and Engineering (197; 3.8%). Seventy percent of international students are studying at the Graduate level, composing approximately one third of all UIUC graduate students. Undergraduates account for five percent of the total UIUC undergraduate population (approximately 15% of these are non-degree exchange students), making the total percentage for all international students at UIUC 12.4 percent. 3
