WIS-95//May-PH The rati F n /F p frm the analysis f data using a new scaling variable S. A. Gurvitz arxiv:hep-ph/95063v1 Jun 1995 Department f Particle Physics, Weizmann Institute f Science, Rehvt 76100, Israel Abstract We analyze the prtn and deutern structure functins at large x using a recently intrduced scaling variable x. This variable includes pwer crrectins t x-scaling, and thus allws us t reach the Bjrken limit at mderate Q. Using available data we extract the rati F n(x)/f p (x) fr x 0.85. Cntrary t earlier expectatins this rati tends t the value /3 fr x 1, which crrespnds t the quark mdel predictin fr equal distributins f valence quarks. Accrding t the quark-partn mdel, the structure functins f hadrns in the Bjrken limit (Q = q ν and x = Q /Mν=cnst) are directly related t the partn distributins q i (x). Fr instance F (x, Q ) F (x) = i e ixq i (x), (1) where the sum is ver the partns, whse charges are e i. In the regin x 1, the cntributin f sea quarks can be neglected. Then assuming the same distributin f the valence quarks, ne easily finds frm Eq. (1) that the neutrn-t-prtn rati F n(x)/f p (x) appraches /3 fr x 1. If, hwever, the quark distributins are different, ne can establish nly upper and lwer limits fr this rati, 1/4 < F n/f p < 4, which fllw frm isspin invariance 1
[1]. The existing data shw cnsiderable Q -dependence f the structure functins which is attributed mainly t the QCD lgarithmic crrectins t Bjrken scaling. Hwever, at highx the scaling vilatins are dminated by pwer crrectins 1/Q (higher twist and target mass effects), which are difficult t evaluate. Therefre, in rder t check the partn mdel predictins, ne needs t btain the structure functins at high Q, where these crrectins are small. At present, high Q structure functins (Q 50 (GeV/c) ) extracted frm BCDMS [] and NMC [3] data are available nly fr x < 0.7. The rati F n(x)/f p (x) btained frm an analysis f these data [4,5] shws steady decrease with x. Thus, it is usually assumed that this rati wuld reach its lwer bund, F n/f p 1/4, fr x 1. This crrespnds t d(x)/u(x) 0 fr x 1, where d(x) and u(x) are the distributin functins fr up and dwn quarks in the prtn. T check this assumptin ne needs data fr the structure functins at x > 0.7. The latter are nw available nly at mderate values f mmentum transfer, Q < 30 (GeV/c) [6 9], and exhibit very strng Q -dependence. A part f the Q -dependence f the structure functins, generated by the target mass crrectins, is usually accunted fr by using the Nachtmann scaling variable [10,11] ξ = x () 1 + 1 + 4M x /Q, instead f the Bjrken variable x. The questin is whether the target mass effect is respnsible fr a majr part f the scaling vilatin at high x. If s, the replacement f x by ξ in structure functins wuld allw us t reach the scaling limit already at mderate Q. Hwever, the analysis f recent high x SLAC data [9] in terms f the Nachtmann variable still reveals strng Q -dependence f the structure functins. Besides the target mass effects, ne can expect imprtant nnperturbative effects frm the cnfining interactin f the partns in the final state. Indeed, the partns are never free, s that the system pssesses a discrete spectrum in the final state. Althugh in the Bjrken limit the struck quark can be cnsidered a free particle, the discreteness f the spectrum manifests itself in 1/Q crrectins t asympttic structure functins [1,13]. One can expect that these crrectins are significant in particular at high x, where lwer-lying
excitatins shuld play an imprtant rle. We have fund [14] that the target mass and cnfining interactin effects in the final state can be effectively accunted fr by taken the struck quark t be ff-shell, with the same virtual mass befre and after the virtual phtn absrptin. As a result, the Bjrken scaling variable x is replaced by a new scaling variable x x(x, Q ), which is the light-cne fractin f the ff-shell struck quark. Explicitly, x = x + 1 + 4M x /Q (1 x) + 4m s x /Q, (3) 1 + 1 + 4M x /Q where M is the target mass and m s is the invariant mass f spectatr partns (quarks and gluns). Fr Q r fr x 0 the variable x cincides with the Nachtmann variable ξ, Eq. (). Hwever, at finite Q these variables are quite different. It fllws frm Eq. (3) that x depends n the invariant spectatr mass, m s. The latter can be cnsidered a functin f the external parameters nly [14]. In the limit x 1 (elastic scattering) n gluns are emitted, and thus m s m 0, the mass f a tw-quark system (diquark). When x < 1, the spectatr mass m s increases due t glun emissin. Fr x clse t 1, m s can be apprximated as m s m 0 + C(1 x), (4) where the cefficient C (GeV). In the fllwing we regard it as a phenmenlgical parameter, determined frm the data. Cnsider the prtn and deutern structure functins (per nuclen) F p,d (x, Q ) at large x. These are shwn in Fig. 1a,b as functins f x fr Q =30 (GeV/c), which is the maximal value f Q in the BCDMS measurements []. (Ntice that fr such high values f Q the variable x is clse t x, Eq. (3)). The data are taken frm [], where the slid lines crrespnd t a 15 parameter fit t BCDMS and NMC data [3]. Fr smaller values f Q, the vilatins f Bjrken scaling are very significant, Fig. 1c,d. By assuming that the majr part f x-scaling vilatins at high x are crrectly accunted fr by the variable x, the Q -dependence f the structure functins in this regin is given by 3
F p,d (x, Q ) = F p,d ( x(x, Q )). (5) Let us cmpare this result with tw BCDMS and SLAC data bins fr x=0.65, 0.75 [,6], Fig. 1c,d, which are the largest values f x available in the BCDMS experiment. We find that these data are perfectly reprduced (the dashed lines in Fig. 1c,d), by taking the spectatr mass m s =0.75 (GeV) fr x=0.75 and m s =1.05 (GeV) fr x=0.65. It is quite remarkable that the same values f m s are btained fr prtn and deutern targets, althugh the crrespnding structure functins are rather different. Using Eq. (4) ne finds that these values f m s determine the parameters m 0 and C, namely C = 3 (GeV) and m 0 = 0. The latter implies that the spectatr quarks are massless and cllinear. Using these values f m 0 and C fr definitin f m s in Eq. (3) we can study the structure functins fr x > 0.75. Cnsider first the data fr the prtn structure functin frm the SLAC experiments [6 9] in the regin x > 0.6 fr 5 < Q < 30 (GeV/c), pltted as a functin f ξ and x respectively, Fig. a,b. The data pints clse t the regin f resnances were excluded by a requirement n the invariant mass f the final state, namely (M +ν) q > (M + ), where =300 MeV. The slid line and the three data pints in Fig. a,b crrespnd t the asympttic structure functin at Q = 30 (GeV/c), the same as in Fig. 1a. The analysis in terms f the Nachtmann scaling variable ξ, Fig. a, shws pr scaling. Mrever, the data pints are far ff the asympttic structure functin (the slid line). In cntrast, the same data pltted as a functin f x, Fig. b, shw excellent scaling. Als the data pints cmpletely cincide with the structure functin at Q = 30 (GeV/c), available fr x < 0.75. This agreement prvides strng evidence that the x-scaling is nt accidental. We therefre prpse that the data pints in Fig. b represent a measurement f the asympttic structure functin fr x > 0.75 as well. Next, cnsider the deutern structure functin frm the SLAC data [6 8], Fig. 3a,b. As in the previus case, we exclude the regin f resnances by taking the invariant mass in the final state greater then M +, where =300 MeV. In additin, in rder t avid cmplicatins frm binding and Fermi mtin effects, we exclude frm ur analysis the data 4
pints with x > 0.9. (This restrictin is relevant nly fr the data [8]). Indeed, recent calculatins f Melnitchuk et al. [15] shw that the rati F d/(f p + F n ) is abut 1.13 fr x = 0.9 and Q =5 (GeV/c), and it rapidly increases fr x > 0.9. Hwever, fr x < 0.85, this rati is within 5% f unity [16]. Fig. 3a shws the deutern data pltted as a functin f the Nachtmann variable ξ. The slid line and three data pints shw the structure functin at Q = 30 (GeV/c), the same as in Fig. 1b. One finds that the data display n scaling and they are far frm the slid line. The same data as a functin f x are shwn in Fig. 3b. As in the prtn case the data shw very gd scaling and d cincide with the structure functin at Q = 30 (GeV/c). Unfrtunately, there are n deutern data in the high-x regin fr large Q, as fr instance the prtn data [9]. As a result, the available deutern data allw us t determine the asympttic structure functin nly up t x = 0.85. Nw with the asympttic structure functins F ( x) = F (x) F (x, Q ) fund abve, we can btain the rati F n (x)/f p (x). Fr this purpse we parametrize the asympttic structure functins as F p,d (x) = exp( 4 i=0 a i x i ) and determine the parameters a i frm the best fit t the data in Figs. b, 3b. The resulting F n /F p rati is shwn in Fig. 4 by the slid line. The dtted lines are the errr bars n the fit, which cmbine statistical and systematic uncertainties. The dashed line crrespnds t F n /F p = /3. Fr a cmparisn, we shw by the dt-dashed line a plynmial extraplatin f this rati t large x, btained frm BCDMS and NMC data by assuming that F n /F p 1/4 fr x 1 [4]. Our results shwn in Fig. 4 demnstrate that cntrary t earlier expectatins, the rati F n /F p des nt apprach its lwer bund, but increases up t apprximately /3. The latter is the quark mdel predictin, assuming identical distributins fr each f the valence quarks. The accuracy f ur results will be checked in future experiments, which will prvide high Q data fr the structure functins at large x. 5
