Smart specialisation strategies Placing greater emphasis on innovation and having an innovation-driven development strategy in place that focuses on each region s strength and competitive advantage. Based on evidence and strategic intelligence about a region s assets and the capability to learnwhat specializations can be developed in relation to those of other regions, in the globalization society Regional Policy contributing to smart growth in Europe 2020 (European Commission)

Smart specialisation strategies Place-based and driven by a pragmatic assessment of individual strengths and weakness. Mindful of the region s history and territorial characteristics and broader geographical context. Aim at concentrating resources on the most promising areas of competitive advantage; e.g. clusters, existing sectors and cross-sectoral activities, eco-innovation, high value-added markets or specific research areas. Regional Policy contributing to smart growth in Europe 2020 (European Commission)

A Trading Zone for Sustainable Development It becomes increasingly clear that global competition today is no longer only between individual entities, but to an ever increasing extent among urban/regional systems including their tangible and intangible elements. The development of these has become a necessary condition for the competitive growth of the system itself, and of its capability of attracting external resources. Concurrently, the concept of valuemight be understood with new connotations as a strategic driver of regional development. The very attractiveness of any territory becomes increasingly linked to its ability to offer intangible as well as tangible component.
