Enjoy the ride! What s that Star in the sky? August 2017 To be amazed by the heavens, first get your bearings and note that North is the warmest side of the house. Face north and on your right is the east where the Sun rises, and on your left is west where the sun sets. Behind you is south. The brightest night is with the Full Moon on the 8 th Aug with partial eclipse that will be barely visible and the darkest night is on the New Moon on the 22 nd with total eclipse only seen in USA. For all you Night Owls The Scorpion is high overhead and dominates Augusts night sky picture with Saturn a little to the right if you are facing north. Let the Moon be your guide when she is below Antares, the bright star in the head of the Scorpion on the 2 nd Aug, and close below Saturn on the 3 rd Aug. Jupiter is in the west and is barely visible as he is close to the horizon and will have set by about 9pm. The Southern Cross is high and on its side below the Pointer Stars. This is a great time to see the Coalsack, or the Emu s head as it is known in indigenous culture. It is a dark cloud just below the Southern Cross and is the head of the Emu whose dark body stretches all the way to Scorpio and is seen differently at different times of the year depending on the season and the earths tilt. This month the emu is vertical and it body and neck has disappeared and thus they know the emus are nesting and it is the time that chicks are fully formed in the eggs and should no longer be collected for food. Special ceremonies of protection and nurturing are enacted which reflect this cosmic cycle of life in the lives of boys and girls which prepares them for initiation into adulthood. For all you Early Birds Be up early this August, or Venus as the Morning Star will soon disappear as the Sun rises in the east. She will be near the Moon on the 19 th when the two goddesses unite for a morning party. Taurus will be low in the east and barely visible but you may catch a glimpse of the Pleiades before Sunrise and there are not many notable stars visible in the north. Turn south to see the Southern Cross low and upside down, so low in fact that any hills, buildings or trees will obscure it from sight, but it s still there and is always there shining just for us. People actually travel from the northern hemisphere wanting to see the cross in all its glory, but see that tonight when its high. What s that in the sky? If you are in a high location you will see the Moon join him for a one-off show on the 22 nd Sep. Saturn is overhead and the Moon will join him on the 27 th Sep. Enjoy the amazing Scorpion who is overhead with reddish Antares shining balefully in his head and let your eye follow the curve of his stinger which is raised ready for action. The stinger is buried in the Milky Way
which is running all the way from the south to the north and is a brilliant sight especially if you happen to be away from urban lights. The Southern Cross is on its right with the pointer stars shining a little higher. If you find them then you can find the cross. For all you Early Birds Venus is visible as the Morning Star for only a short time as she soon disappears into the glare of the sunrise. She will stay with the sun for ages and finally emerges as the Evening Star in about 8-9 months time. This cycle is known in ancient times as the goddess s descent into the underworld. Look ahead and you can see Taurus the great bull with Aldebaran in his eye Pleiades in his heart a little lower to the west. You must imagine his horns and body stretching across the sky. Let the Moon be your guide when she is above the Pleaides on the 12 th and a whisker below and to the east of Aldebaran on the 13 th September and finally near his horns on the 14 th September.
