Gravity and the Universe Test general rela7vity via: Solar System / lab tests Binary pulsars Black hole mergers (future) Cosmology evolu7on of the Universe Gravita7onal 7me dila7on observable directly by changing the height of best atomic clocks by as ligle as a foot! 1

Gravity and the Universe Universe is expanding (Hubble s Law): is the evolu7on of the expansion rate consistent with known contents of the Universe and predic7ons of GR? does structure form in the Universe under ac7on of gravity as predicted by GR? Dark MaGer Directly observed mager in the Universe (stars, gas) is not consistent with the observed mo7ons in galaxies and clusters of galaxies if general rela7vity (*) is correct theory of gravity (*) Newtonian gravity does not work either, and the differences between Newton and Einstein on these scales are insignificant 2

Dark MaGer In a spherically symmetric mass distribu7on, the velocity of a circular orbit traces the amount of mass interior to the orbit v = GM r M(r) = rv 2 G measure the rota5on curve v(r) and we get the mass interior Spiral galaxies are good places to measure mass: disk rotates in nearly circular orbits can measure gas clouds at greater radii than almost all of the light 3

r Expecta7ons: beyond the radius where we see light, mass interior is constant: v = GM r r 1 2 velocity should decrease with distance further out Instead observe a flat rota(on curve More gravity than accounted for by known stars and gas evidence for dark ma0er 4

Dynamical evidence for dark mager also seen in clusters of galaxies: galaxies are moving faster than expected if just the known gas and galaxies are present What is the dark ma0er? All we know for certain is that it cannot be any luminous object (e.g. stars) Strong arguments that it is not made of ordinary ( baryonic ) mager can infer how much was produced in the first minutes a]er the Big Bang and not enough Consistent with being an undiscovered elementary par7cle massive enough to move at v << c as galaxies form cold dark ma0er 5

Structure of the Universe on large scales is consistent with there being ~5 7mes as much dark mager as visible mager Dark mager par7cles could be detected: produced in high energy par7cle collisions detected when they collide with nuclei in sensi7ve detectors if they annihilate into observable par7cles Xenon100 experiment Try to detect dark mager collisions with xenon atoms situated deep underground (shielded from cosmic rays) sensi7ve to cold dark mager par7cles that interact weakly (via weak nuclear force) with mager 6

No clear evidence for dark mager so far Collisions between dark mager par7cles might lead to annihila7on into photons Observable in regions where the dark mager density is highest e.g. center of Milky Way Signature: flux of high energy photons (gamma rays) with energies set by the mass of the dark mager par7cles 7

Data from Fermi satellite shows apparent excess of ~135 GeV gamma- rays from Galac7c Center not (yet?) convincing evidence for dark mager detec7on AMS experiment on the Space Sta7on sees increase in the frac7on of high energy positrons in cosmic rays Could be consequence of dark mager par7cles annihila7ng into positrons near Earth BUT could also be due to produc7on of positrons at nearby pulsars 8

Very strong evidence that dark mager exists if Newtonian gravity / GR works on galac7c scales and beyond BUT direct evidence from detec7on of the dark mager par7cle is lacking Could gravity be misbehaving on large scales? Possible to modify gravity so that the observed sources of mager yield flat rota7on curves Newton a = GM r 2 a2 a 0 = GM r 2 Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) a 0 would be new constant describing when ordinary gravity transi7ons to different law in limit of large scales / low accelera7ons 9

Could gravity be misbehaving on large scales? MOND works for spiral galaxy rota7on curves Very hard to explain the full range of astronomical observa7ons that favor the dark mager hypothesis X- ray / lensing observa7ons of colliding galaxy clusters suggest dark mager is spa7ally separate from luminous hot gas not just gas gravitates 10
