Tiles Cleaning and Maintenance Instructions Unglazed fully vitrified tiles From the moment they are laid, unglazed fully vitrified tiles require only minimal maintenance. We recommend cleaning the tile with mild detergent and clean water, using a rag or chamoisstyle mop rather than a sponge mop. Sponge mops can push dirty water into the grout lines, making them more difficut to clean. Change the the water frequently while mopping, as dirty water can give the tile a cloudy look. A final rinse with clear water is all that s necessary to keep tile and grout looking like new. Under no circumstances should plastic-based coatings and varnishes be used on unglazed fully vitrified tiles. Water droplets will leave visible marks on varnished surfaces and it is practically impossible to remove the varnish. At times, unglazed vitrified tiles may appear to be covered in a whitish film. This occurs when an excess of soft cement is applied as the tiles are laid and then is not removed by the tile fitter once the joints have set. A thorough cleaning with mild soap and water (see above) should remove the excess cement and leave the tiles looking their best. It is the responsibility of the tile fitter to make sure the tiles remain free of any stains or marks once the tiles are installed. It is also important to remember that the tile fitter is rarely the last person walking across the newly-laid tiles. Putting down a thin layer of sawdust or some other appropriate covering will help protect the tiles from any accidental mishaps that may occur. While unglazed vitrified tiles have a very low risk of staining, accidents can happen. Food, cleaning products or other substances may fall onto the tile and cause staining. When the cause of the stain is unknown, we recommend trying the following agents in the order below: - Benzene- generally effective at removing glue stains from Formica and non oil-based paint. The use of Benzene is not recommended when dealing with stains caused by table oils, linseed oil, putty or petrol. - Methylated spirits - Surgical spirits - Tetrahydrofurane - In extreme cases, K2R can be used. It is available In gel form. If the stain remains visible (although less obvious) after thorough treatment using one of the above agents, it can be helpful to apply a layer of paraffin oil or Vaseline over the entire surface. This will improve the overall visual appearance of the tiled area while also protecting the tile from future staining. For best results, paraffin oil or Vaseline should be left to soak into the tiles for 24 hours after which the following procedure should be adopted: 1. The floor is thoroughly cleaned using by using a mild detergent and water solution. 2. Pieces of warmed, soft soap are scattered on the floor. 3. The floor is thoroughly scrubbed with a hard brush. 4. The floor is damp mopped, taking care not to apply too much water. Cleaning & Maintenance Oct. 1st, 2015 Page 20
