I = interest rate. It is negative if you are paying interest or losing money. If I = 7% you use 0.07 here. x = number of years. y = final amount of money. Population growth or decline. y = P(1 + I) x P = starting population. I = growth rate. If it is negative the population is declining. x = number of years. y = final population. 1.
