Glen Andrew supports extending subway service to our Scarborough Centre. This presentation will cover three topics: 1.What is the TTC s proposal to extend the subway; 2.How will that affect our neighbourhood; 3.Is there a better way to extend the subway. 1

The only station would be in the shopping centre s east parking lot. 3

Three things are required to build the TTC s plan: 1.A Tunnel Boring Machine Insertion Shaft; 2.The Station; 3.A Work Site. 6

PART 2: How will the TTC plan affect our neighbourhood 13
36,000 tunnel liners 265,000 m2 of concrete 7,300 precast ties 47,000 tons of rebar 36 kilometers of rails Tens of thousands of fixtures and fitting 100,000 dump truck trips 14
We can expect temporary traffic signals on McCowan, maybe Ellesmere, to get heavy trucks onto off the Work Site. For 5 years. 15
Construction activity: 7 days a week for 5 years. The hours of work permitted by the City are 7a.m. to 11p.m. Some overnight work is permitted. It takes a lot of people to build a subway. Where do they park? Where do all the heavy trucks queue up waiting their turn to enter the work site? 16
Level of Service F 17
They have to build a new bus terminal over, under, beside the new subway station 18
We already have a bus terminal. Bought and paid for. It works pretty well. 19
If our neighbourhoods survive all this, we will have a dead end subway. It is extraordinarily bad planning to deliberately take a subway to a location from which it cannot and/or should not be extended. L. Ross Heavens!!! 20
PART 3:Is There a Better Way? 21
We are asking our representatives, Glenn, Brad and Salma: Please ask for an engineering feasibility and cost comparison of what we call the Big Bend subway alignment and use of a 13m TBM. 22
The Big Bend Subway Alignment 23
Tunnel boring experts tell us: Advantages of a 13m TBM You get a better solution for less cost. Michael Schatz, Managing Director of Hatch significant construction cost savings no impact on day-to-day surface activities Verya Nasri, chief tunnel engineer, AECOM, New York, NY. A large diameter bore tunnel may allow for station construction and special trackwork to be constructed within the tunnel structure City of Toronto business case report, Downtown Relief Line, page 36. 24
Advantages of a 13m TBM: No cut and cover excavations for station. Stations are built INSIDE the tunnel. 25
SRT Station Shopping centre 16 meters Triton Road 26
Advantages of The Big Bend with a 13m TBM: 1.No homes expropriated. 27

PLUS.. 36
Bonus!!! If it really is less expensive, as the tunnel experts tell us, to use the 13m TBM Could we get a station at our hospital!!! 37
There s no way to get a station at Lawrence with the TTC s normal cut and cover station construction. It s Way too deep. 38
But with a 13m TBM you build the station INSIDE the tunnel. The only disruption at the surface is a shaft for escalators, elevators, stairs, mechanical equipment etc. Could we get a Castle Frank type station at our hospital? 39
The Federal government is funding our subway: The Provincial government is funding our subway: The Provincial government will have to approve an environmental assessment, including community impacts; Toronto Council will have to approve the alignment and fund our subway. We thank them for all their hard work to get us this far. We are asking our representatives, Glenn, Brad and Salma: Do not approve the TTC plan until you have an engineering feasibility and cost comparison of the Big Bend subway alignment and use of a 13m TBM. 40
TTC Argument No 1. We don t do curves. 41
TTC Argument No 2. The trains would have to slow down going around the curve. 42
TTC Argument No 3. The tunnel is longer. 43
TTC Argument No. 4: We would have to demolish the SRT and bus station on day one. 44
