The Mystical Element and 24 Mountains By Cahaya Harapan (cahayaharapan@gmail.com) Hetu shows 5 elements, and each element have Yin and Yang nature, and represented by numerals. 1,3,7 and 9 is Heavenly Numeral therefore Yang and 2,4,6 and 8 is Earthly Numeral therefore Yin. Fire at the top, Water at bottom, Wood at left and Metal at right is another important concept of Hetu. It represent 4 seasons, Metal represent Autumn, Water represent Winter, Wood represent Spring and Fire represent Summer. Season is the most obvious Qi influences, to mother nature. The 4 elements classified into Yin and Yang nature too, Wood - Fire is Yang and Metal Water is Yin. The question in how about Earth element in the centre? Earth is the mystical element. It is the first element from 5 elements and does not has a specific polarity. In Wujitu Chen Tuan, Earth and Taiji who borns Yin Yang (duality), placed at the same position (centre).
Look at the centre diagram (Five Qi), Left is Yang and right is Yin. Start from Taiji, represented the small empty circle, it borns Metal and Water (Yin nature) and back to Taiji again, after that it borns Wood and Fire (Yang nature) and back to Taiji again. It is a continuous process. Another interesting concept from Wujitu is the gate of mysterious female at the bottom. The gate represent Gen gua and mysterious female represent Kun gua, and interestingly both is Earth element based on Houtian Bagua. From this chart, we can see, Earth element and Taiji, share the same position.
Luoshu expand the meaning of Hetu into 9 palaces, and each numeral has a new identity attached to it. Inside Luoshu, there are many concepts or models, namely : 1. Luoshu keeps the 4 season model (Fire at the top, Water at the bottom). 2. Luoshu has new element for each numerals and each element has Yin and Yang nature. 3. 7-6 is Metal, 1-8 is Water, 3-4 is Wood and 9-2 is Fire. This model, confusing many scholars for thousand years. The key problem, why Earth become Water and Fire. The answer is, the mystical nature of Earth. Therefore I can say, Luoshu still have Yin and Yang element pair inside it. 4. From 2 (Kun), Yin born and from 8 (Gen) Yang born. Interestingly, 2 is paired with 9 (extreme Yang, Fire) and 8 is paired with 1 (extreme Yin, Water). If you see two small dots, inside Yin Yang symbol, it is 2 and 8. From the extreme Yang, Yin born and from the extreme Yin, Yang born. 5. Houtian Bagua and Luoshu match perfectly as twin. The image represent by Bagua, and numerals by Luoshu.
24 Mountains Ring Inside Lopan there is 24 mountains ring (dipan), that used by many fengshui schools. Dipan adopt the 4 seasons model, Shen-You-Xu (Metal frame), Hai-Zi-Chou (Water frame), Yin-Mao-Chen (Wood frame) and Si-Wu-Wei (Fire frame). All frames ended by Earth element, the same model of Luoshu, but Luoshu focus is to differentiate extreme Yin and Yang. 24 Mountains expand the Luoshu Model, into 4 seasons. Luoshu has Yang and Yin for each element namely : 7 Yang Metal-6 Yin Metal, 1 Yang Water-8 Yin Water, 3 Yang Wood-4 Yin Wood and 9 Yang Fire and 2 Yin Fire. The same thing happen to 24 mountains, the first two elements should be in Yang Yin format or Yin Yang format. Let s see 24 mountains in details. Ren 1 is Heavenly Numerals therefore Yang. From Luoshu explanation we can see 1 (Kan), Zi Ren is Yang and Gui is Yin. How about Zi? Luoshu 1-8 (Water), each element North Gui paired in YangYin or YinYang format. Therefore Zi(Water) is Yin. 1 Kan is Water, Ren-Gui and Hai-Zi-Chou also Water. The first of two element should in Yin Yang pair. The same rule, happen to Dui, Zhen and Li. Each element start grow from Yin sector, like mother (Yin) to give birth a new child. Chou 8 (Gen), Northeast Gen Yin 8 is Earthly Numerals therefore Yin. Chou is a Water frame(season), Hai-Zi- Chou, which represent Water. If Chou is Yin Water, what is the Yang Water? That s way there is Gen represent Water, to complete Yin and Yang element. 4 (Xun), Southeast 2 (Kun), Southwest Chen Xun Si Wei Kun 4 is Earthly Numerals therefore Yin. Chen is a Wood frame and it is Yin, adopt its parent sector. It should paired with Yang Wood element, therefore there is Xun represent Yang Wood element. Si Fire start to grow, therefore Yang. 2 is Earthly Numerals therefore Yin. Wei is a Fire frame and it is Yin, adopt its parent sector. It should paired with Yang Fire element, therefore there is Kun
6 (Qian), Northwest Shen Xu Qian Hai represent Yang Fire element. Shen Metal start to grow, therefore Yang. 6 is Earthly Numerals therefore Yin. Xu is a Metal frame and it is Yin, adopt its parent sector. It should paired with Yang Metal element, therefore there is Qian represent Yang Metal element. Hai Wood start to grow, therefore Yang. The most complex explanation of 24 mountains are 2 (Kun) and 8 (Gen) sectors, the gate of mysterious female, where Yin and Yang born. From Luoshu model we know, 8 (Gen) is a starting point of Yang elements namely Wood and Fire. 8 (Gen) Earth is the mystical element. 24 mountains come with more detail model, it put Yin (Tiger) inside 8 (Gen), to present Fire (Yang) is born and Wood (Yang) is start to grow. All these should happen in its Yin parent sector. Like mother (Yin) to give birth. Yang Yun Song the famous fengshui master from Tang dynasty, come with a new model. He shifted 24 mountains sector 7.5 degree (clockwise), he called it Tianpan. What does it means? Half part of Yin (Tiger) should be on 3 (Zhen) and half part on 8 (Gen). 3 is Yang and 8 is Yin, is it possible father(yang) to give birth?
