Bell Ringer 11/9/16 On a loose sheet of paper 1. Label your paper 2. Answer the following question, based on your notes. 3. What is the formula? a. To find Mass b. To Find Density c. To Find Volume 4. What are the units for each?
Bell Ringer 11.10.16 Go to the table and pick up the following assignments. Warm-up: Reading activity/ Density worksheet Complete both sides Quiz Review
Bell Ringer 11.14.16 Take 5 minutes to look over your review. 1. Grab the chrome book that matches your assigned seat. 2. Enter the code into your web browser 3. When the timer starts begin your quiz: 4. http://online.testroom.com/34960pdg 5. When you re finished take out your vocabulary notebook. 6. Use discovery ed to find the remaining definitions.
In your interactive notebook, copy down the following: please make sure you label, and date the page. Title: Energy Acronym Mechanical Electrical Light Thermal Sound
Understanding Heat Transfer: Conduction, Convection and Radiation
What is Heat? This is the movement of thermal energy from a substance at a higher temperature to another at a lower temperature.
Heat vs. Temperature Heat is the actual energy Temperature is the measure of average kinetic energy of particles in a substance.
Heat is NOT Temperature
DON T FORGET TO PUT TODAY S DATE ON THE PAGE! Bell Ringer 11/15/2016 1. Find your seat number from yesterday! 2. Grab a warm-up slip off the table 3. Glue the slip in your interactive notebook. 4. Label the page (How Energy Changes) 5. Glue the warm-up slip into your interactive notebook a. Make sure you make record of this in your Table of Contents 6. As you read, make note of the highlighted, and bold points in the article in your interactive notebook 7. Then, Answer the questions in your notebook
How Energy Changes Energy always exists. The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be destroyed or created, but it can change form. Energy that changes form is transformed. Sound energy can transform into mechanical energy. Thermal energy can change into chemical energy when a cake is baked. Chemical energy is changed into mechanical energy when food is eaten and gives power to muscles. Energy does not stay in one place. It is transferred from one object to another by work. When a bowling ball hits a pin, the energy is transferred from the ball to the pin
Heat Transfer Heat always moves from a warmer place to a cooler place. Hot objects in a cooler room will cool to room temperature. Cold objects in a warmer room will heat up to room temperature.
Heat Transfer Methods Heat transfers in three ways: Conduction Convection Radiation
Conduction Conduction heat transfer is the flowing of heat energy from a high-temperature object to a lower-temperature object.
When you heat a metal strip at one end, the heat travels to the other end. Conduction As you heat the metal, the particles vibrate, these vibrations make the adjacent particles vibrate, and so on and so on, the vibrations are passed along the metal and so is the heat. We call this? Conduction
etals are different
hy does metal feel colder than wood, if they are th at the same temperature? Metal is a conductor, wood is an insulator. Metal conducts the heat away from your hands. Wood does not conduct the heat away from your hands as well as the metal, so the wood feels warmer than the metal.
Convection Convection takes place when heated molecules move from one place to another, taking the heat with them. Convection is common in both the atmosphere, as well as in the oceans. Convection is the primary way that heat moves through gases and liquids.
Convection
onvection What happens to the particles in a liquid or a gas when you heat them? The particles spread out and become less dense.
old air sinks Where is the freezer compartment put in a fridge? It is put at the top, because cool air sinks, so it cools the food on the way down. Freezer compartment It is warmer at the bottom, so this warmer air rises and a convection current is set up.
Radiation
he third method of heat transfer How does heat energy get from the Sun to the Earth? There are no particles between the Sun and the Earth so it CANNOT travel by conduction or by convection.? RADIATION
Radiation The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves. Examples: Sun Fire Light bulb
adiation question Why are houses painted white in hot countries? White reflects heat radiation and keeps the house cooler.
