SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE : BHADRAK 1. Location : Bhadrak district is one of the eastern located districts in Odisha. It lies between 86 o 16 E to 87 o. E longitude and between 20 o 43 to 21 o 13 N latitude. It is bounded by the Balasore district in north, Jajpur district in south, Bay of Bengal in the east and Keonjhar district in the west. 2. Climate : The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during April to May and cold during December to January. The monsoon generally breaks during the month of June. Annual rainfall of the district was 1539.6 m.m. in 2011 which is higher than the normal rainfall (1427.9 m.m). 3. Area and Population : The district has an area of 2505 sq.kms and 15.06 lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 1.61 percent of the states territory and shares 3.59 percent of the states population. The density of population of the district is 601 per sq.kms. as against 270 person per sq.km of the state. It has 1311 villages (including 68 un-inhabited villages) covering 7 blocks, 7 Tahasils and 1 Subdivision. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is 334896 (22.23%) and schedule tribe population is 30428 (2.02%). The literacy rate of the district is 82.8 against 72.9 of the state. 4. Agriculture : During the year 2010-11, the net area sown was 158 thousand hectares against 4681 thousand hectares of the state. The agricultural production of the district shows 4377821 quintals of paddy, 1590 quintals wheat,1010 quintals of maize, 12416 quintals mung, 5718 quintals biri, 7 quintals kulthi, 735 quintals til, 469 quintals groundnuts, 265 quintals mustard, 7323 quintals potatoes and 1598 quintals of Jute and 7366 quintals sugarcane. During 2010-11, the total fertilizers used in Bhadrak district is about 26088 MT with a breakage of 13432 MT nitrogenous, 8111 MT phosphatic and 4545 MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare was 118 Kg. 1

5. Irrigation : During the year 2010-11, it is reported by Dy. Director, Agriculture, Bhadrak that the irrigation potential created in different Blocks of Bhadrak Districts during Kharif and Rabi are 113771 hectares and 35542 hectares respectively from all sources. 6. Education : There were 1490 nos. of primary schools, 1006 nos. of middle schools 274 nos. of secondary schools and 35 nos. of general colleges in the district during 2010-11. Besides, there is one engineering diploma and one engineering degree college in the district during year 2010-11 to impart technical education. 7. Health : The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt., Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 58 nos. of the Allopathic medical institutions with 408 beds facilities, 25 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 23 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year 2011. 8. Veterinary Services : During the year 2010-11, 15 nos. of Hospitals and dispensaries, 90 nos. of livestock Aid centers were functioning in Bhadrak district to provide veterinary services to the people. 9. Industry and Mining : During the year 2010-11, 191 nos. of small scale industries was established with total capital investment of about Rs.1552.00 lakhs with 808 nos. of Employment generated in Bhadrak district. 10. Power : Consumption of electricity in Bhadrak north,south and Soro Division during the year was 558.812 million units and villages so far electrified as on 2010-11 is 1097 which constitutes 88.3% to the total villages of the district. 2

11. Tourist : There are 8 nos. of tourist centers such as Aradi (Akhandalmani), Aharpada (Bhadrakali), Bhadrak, Dhamara, Chandabali, Guamala Nuasasan, Iswarpur (Dabanaikani) & Dhamnagar identified by department of Tourism and Culture, Odisha. During 2011, the number of Domestic tourists were 1390770 and foreign tourists were 105 who visited the tourists spots of the district. 12. Transport & Communication : During 2010-11, 40 Kms. of National Highways, 114 Kms. of state highways, 125 Kms. Major district roads, 98 kms of other district roads, 834 Kms of rural roads,5334 Kms, of Gram Panchayat roads and 225 Kms of Panchayat Samiti roads are operating in the district. Besides, 35.82 kms of Railway lines is passing through the district with 4 nos. railway station and 2 nos. of passenger halts. 13. Banking : As on March, 2011, there were 86 nos. of schedule commercial banks having 1587 crore rupees deposits and 783 crore rupees credit in the district. 3
