Report of Subsurface Soil Exploration -JUN-04 Analysis and Recommendations Project No. 4--48 LASIP County Barn Road and Wing South Channels Page No. Naples, Collier Co., FL 4. Analyzing the existing soil conditions with respect to the proposed construction as it relates to the proposed construction.. Preparing this report to document the results of our field exploration, engineering analysis and foundation design recommendations. PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND SITE LOCATION Collier County is planning the next portion of the Lely Area Stormwater Improvements Project (LASIP), which will include constructing swales along the west, north and east side of Wing South Airpark in Naples, Collier County, Florida. In addition, three weirs are planned at the east end of Parkers Hammock Road and the north and south end of Wing South Airpark. Another weir is planned for the east roadside ditch of Davis Boulevard between Crews Road and Cope Lane. The approximate locations of the proposed weirs are shown on the attached Figure at the boring locations T- through 4. FIELD EXPLORATION PROGRAM Our field exploration consisted of performing four Standard Penetration Test (T) borings at each of the proposed weir structure locations. The T borings were drilled to a depth of feet below the existing ground surface. In addition, our field exploration consisted of performing hand auger borings along the proposed swale of Parkers Hammock Road and around Wing South Airpark on about 00-foot centers. Each hand auger boring was advanced to a depth of. feet or refusal on rock. The T borings were conducted using methods consistent with ASTM D-86. The auger borings were conducted using methods consistent with ASTM D-4. The equipment and procedures used in the borings are described in detail in the Appendix. The locations of the borings are shown on the attached Boring Location Plans presented as Figure, which are 04 aerial photographs available from the Collier County Property Appraiser s website. The borings were located by measurement from the site features shown on aerial key maps of the project layout (scale " = 400'). Therefore, the locations indicated should be considered accurate only to the degree implied by the method of measurement used. If a more precise location of the borings is desired, then we recommend that a registered land surveyor be employed to locate the borings on site. GPS coordinates of each boring location are provided on the boring logs. Ardaman & Associates, Inc.

Report of Subsurface Soil Exploration -JUN-04 Analysis and Recommendations Project No. 4--48 LASIP County Barn Road and Wing South Channels Page No. Naples, Collier Co., FL GENERAL SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The general subsurface conditions encountered during the field exploration are shown on the attached soil boring logs. Soil stratification is based on examination of recovered soil samples and interpretation of the field boring logs. The stratification lines represent the approximate boundaries between the soil types, the actual transitions may be gradual. A generalization of subsurface soil conditions encountered in the borings is described below. Wing South Channels (Auger borings A- through A-) Auger boring A- was located on the east side of the Wing South runway in an area that was formerly a cypress stand. The boring encountered fine sands ( or A-) from the ground surface to a depth of feet where dark brown sandy clay (CL or A--6) was encountered to the.-foot depth explored. The remaining auger borings A- through A- encountered a typical soil profile consisting of fine sands ( or A-) occasionally underlain by thin layers of clayey sands (SC or A--6). Rock was typically encountered at varying depths as shallow as feet. Weir at South End of Wing South Airpark (T-) Depth From To Soil Description Ground Surface ' Loose fine sands (). Report of Subsurface Soil Exploration -JUN-04 Analysis and Recommendations Project No. 4--48 LASIP County Barn Road and Wing South Channels Page No. Naples, Collier Co., FL Groundwater was encountered in the boreholes at depths ranging from to 6 feet below the existing ground surface at the time of our field exploration (/0 /4). The groundwater depths shown on the boring logs represent the groundwater surface encountered on the dates shown. Fluctuations in groundwater level should be anticipated throughout the year due to seasonal variations in rainfall, and other factors. LABORATORY TESTING PROGRAM Representative soil samples obtained during our field sampling operation were packaged and transferred to our office and, thereafter, examined by a geotechnical engineer to obtain more accurate descriptions of the existing soil strata. Laboratory testing was performed on selected samples as deemed necessary to aid in soil classification and to further define the engineering properties of the soils. The laboratory tests included Natural Moisture Content and Percent Finer than the U.S. No. 00 Sieve (percent silt and clay) and Organic Content. The test results are presented on the attached soil boring logs at the depths from which the samples were recovered. The soil descriptions shown on the logs are based upon visual-manual procedures in accordance with local practice. Soil classification is in general accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (ASTM D-48) and is also based on visual-manual procedures. The soils encountered in the auger borings were also classified in accordance with AASHTO M-4 Recommended Procedure for Classification of Soils and Soil-Aggregate Mixture for Highway Construction Purposes. Wing South Channels ANALYSIS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The auger borings A- through A- were performed along the alignment of the proposed Wing South Channels. Auger borings A- through A- show the typical soil profile along the proposed channels as fine sands ( or A-) occasionally underlain by thin layers of clayey sands (SC or A--6) and then limestone bedrock. The depth to rock was variable among the borings. Auger borings A-,,, 8 and 0 terminated on rock at depths ranging from to 4. feet. The remaining auger borings did not encounter Ardaman & Associates, Inc.

Report of Subsurface Soil Exploration -JUN-04 Analysis and Recommendations Project No. 4--48 LASIP County Barn Road and Wing South Channels Page No. 6 Naples, Collier Co., FL rock within the.-foot depth explored; however, gravelly sands ( or A--b) were encountered at the bottom of some of the borings indicating that rock likely exists just below. Typically, heavy excavators can remove soft limestone and boulders; however, dynamic methods using hydraulic hammers or hoes will be needed to remove hard limestone where it occurs within the proposed channels. The exception to the generalized soil/rock profile was observed along the east side of the Wing South runway adjacent to a cypress stand at the location of auger boring A-. This boring encountered feet of fine sands ( or A-) underlain by a dark brown sandy clay (CL or A--6) to the.-foot depth explored. Weir Soil Design Parameters The T borings for the proposed weirs showed a similar soil/rock profile consisting of fine sands () to depths of to feet where limestone/calcareous sandstone was encountered. The limestone extends to depths of to 8 feet and then grades to very loose marly silty sands (SM) and sandy silts (ML). The limestone appears to be weathered with hard and soft layers. Hard driving resistance of steel sheet piling should be expected, and removal of the rock by trench excavation may be appropriate to expedite installation. Very little resistance to penetration will be offered by the underlying silty sands (SM)/sandy silts (ML). The permeability of the silty sand (SM) and sandy silt (ML) strata is very low and sheet pile penetration into these strata (below a depth of feet) is necessary to keep seepage under the sheet pile wall. Following are recommended soil design parameters for the weirs. The soil properties, based on the samples obtained and the recorded N-Values from the T borings, were averaged and are presented in the following table. The soil properties presented include total unit weight, γt, in pounds per cubic feet (pcf), angle of internal friction, ø, in degrees, and cohesion strength, c, in pounds per square foot. The soil buoyant unit weight, γb, can be obtained by subtracting 6.4 pcf from the total unit weight, γt. Ardaman & Associates, Inc.

Report of Subsurface Soil Exploration -JUN-04 Analysis and Recommendations Project No. 4--48 LASIP County Barn Road and Wing South Channels Page No. 8 Naples, Collier Co., FL GENERAL COMMENTS The analysis and recommendations in this report are based on the data obtained from the 4 T borings and hand auger borings performed at the approximate locations indicated on the Boring Location Plans shown on the attached Figure. This report does not reflect any variations that may occur between the borings. The nature and extent of variations may not become evident until during the course of construction. If variations then appear evident, it will be necessary for a reevaluation of the recommendations of this report to be made after performing on-site observations during the construction period and noting the characteristics of any variations. When the final design and specifications are completed, we would like the opportunity to review them to determine whether changes in the original concept may have affected the validity of our recommendations and whether these recommendations have been implemented in the design and specifications. While the borings are representative of subsurface conditions at their respective locations and for their respective vertical reaches, local variations characteristic of the subsurface materials of the region are anticipated and may be encountered. The boring logs and related information are based on the driller's logs and visual examination of selected sample in the laboratory. The delineation between soil types shown on the logs is approximate and the description represents our interpretation of subsurface conditions at the designated boring locations and on the particular date drilled. We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you on this project. If you have any questions about this report, please contact this office. Very truly yours, Ardaman & Associates, Inc.
