Let k be an algebraically cloed field of characteritic 0, and let A = k[x,y]/(f) be a quai-homogeneou plane curve. We howthat forany gradedtorionfree A-module M without free ummand, there exit a natural graded integrable connection, i.e. a graded A-linear homomorphim : Der k (A) End k (M) that atifie the derivation property and preerve the Lie product. In particular, a torion free module N over the complete local ring B = Â admit a natural integrable connection if A i a imple curve ingularity, or if A i irreducible and N i a gradablemodule. Introduction Let k be an algebraically cloed field of characteritic 0, let A be a commutative k-algebra, and let M be an A-module. We define a connection on M to be an A-linear homomorphim : Der k (A) End k (M) that atify the derivation property, i.e. D (am) = a D (m)+d(a)m for all D Der k (A), a A and m M. If i alo a homomorphim of Lie algebra, then we ay that i an integrable connection on M. We ay that A i a quai-homogeneou plane curve if A = k[x,y]/(f) i a reduced, poitively graded k-algebra given by a quai-homogeneou polynomial f 0. We hall denote it completion by B = Â, and refer to B a the complete local ring of a quai-homogeneou plane curve ingularity. 2 EIVIND ERIKSEN The imple curve ingularitie have been claified by Arnol d (1981) and Wall (1984). Thee ingularitie have complete local ring of the form B = k[[x,y]]/(f), where f i one of the following polynomial: A n : f = x 2 +y n+1 n 1 D n : f = x 2 y +y n 1 n 4 E 6 : f = x 3 +y 4 E 7 : f = x 3 +xy 3 E 8 : f = x 3 +y 5 In particular, any imple curve ingularity i of the form B = Â for a quai-homogeneou plane curve A = k[x, y]/(f). By abue of language, we hall refer to the graded k-algebra A a a imple curve ingularity. In thi paper, we tudy exitence of connection on an A-module M when A i a quai-homogeneou plane curve and M i a graded torion free A-module. A connection : Der k (A) End k (M) i graded if D (M w ) M w+λ for any homogeneou derivation D Der k (A) of weight λ and any integer w Z. We how the following reult: Theorem 1. Let A = k[x,y]/(f) be a quai-homogeneou plane curve, and let M be a graded torion free A-module. If A i irreducible or a imple curve ingularity, then there i a natural graded integrable connection on M. In fact, we believe that any graded torion free module without free ummand over an arbitrary quai-homogeneou plane curve admit a natural graded integrable connection. We give a ufficient condition in lemma 6, and how that it i atified if A = k[x,y]/(y(x n y m )) for poitive integer m,n N with (m,n) = 1 and if M ha rank one. However, we have not been able to find a proof in the general cae. We ay that a torion free B-module N i gradable if it i of the form N = M for ome graded torion free A-module M. If B i the complete local ring of a imple curve ingularitie, then it follow from theorem (15.14) in Yohino (1990) that any torion free B-module i gradable. Corollary 2. Any torion free module over the complete local ring of a imple curve ingularity admit a natural integrable connection. Corollary 3. Any gradable torion free module over the complete local ring of an irreducible quai-homogeneou plane curve ingularity admit a natural integrable connection.
CONNECTIONS ON MODULES 3 2. Quai-homogeneou plane curve Let k be an algebraically cloed field. We define a poitively graded k-algebra to be a finitely generated N 0 -graded k-algebra A = w N 0 A w with A 0 = k. In thi paper, we hall aume that A i a poitively graded, reduced k-algebra of the form A = k[x,y]/(f), where f 0. Thi implie that the complete local ring  i a quai-homogeneou plane curve ingularity, and we hall refer to the graded ring A a a quai-homogeneou plane curve. The imple curve ingularitie have been claified by Arnol d (1981) and Wall (1984). Thee ingularitie have complete local ring of the form B = k[[x,y]]/(f), where f i one of the following polynomial: A n : f = x 2 +y n+1 n 1 D n : f = x 2 y +y n 1 n 4 E 6 : f = x 3 +y 4 E 7 : f = x 3 +xy 3 E 8 : f = x 3 +y 5 In particular, the complete local ring of any imple curve ingularity i of the form B = k[[x,y]]/(f) = Â, where A = k[x,y]/(f) i a quaihomogeneou plane curve. By abue of language, we hall refer to the graded k-algebra A a a imple curve ingularity. We introduce ome notation that will be ued throughout thi paper: Let k[x, y] be a poitively graded polynomial k-algebra, with grading given by poitive weight w x = deg(x), w y = deg(y) N atifying (w x,w y ) = 1, and let f be a homogeneou element in k[x,y] of poitive weight w f = deg(f) N. We recall that the homogeneou element f k[x,y] of weight w f are the quai-homogeneou polynomial of weight w f, i.e. the polynomial f k[x,y] that atify f(α wx x,α wy y) = α wf f(x,y) for all α k. We conider A = k[x,y]/(f) with the induced grading, which i a poitively graded k-algebra. Lemma 1. We have that f = u f 1 f r, where u k i a unit in k[x,y], and f i k[x,y] i an irreducible polynomial given by f i = x, f i = y or f i = x wy +a i y wx for ome a i k for 1 i r. Proof. In cae w x = w y = 1, it i enough to how that any quaihomogeneou polynomial ha a factorization into linear polynomial.
4 EIVIND ERIKSEN Thi i an elementary fact, ince k i algebraically cloed. In the general cae, any irreducible quai-homogeneou polynomial with more than one ummand mut include x wy and y wx. By an argument imilar to the one in cae w x = w y = 1, irreducibility implie that = 1. For 1 i r, we denote the weight of f i by w i = deg(f i ) N, and write A i = A/(f i ) for the correponding poitively graded domain. We aume that f i f j when i j, which mean that A i reduced. For any graded k-algebra R, let Q(R) be the graded total ring of fraction of R, i.e. the localization Q(R) = S 1 R, where S i the et a homogeneou non-zero divior in R. Then the natural map R Q(R) i an injective graded homomorphim, and we identify R with it image in Q(R). We define the graded normalization R of R to be the integral cloureofrinq(r), andwriten : R Rforthegradednormalization map. It follow from lemma 1 that there i an iomorphim Ãi = k[t i ] of graded k-algebra for 1 i r, with d i = deg(t i ) N given by w y if f i = x d i = w x if f i = y 1 if f i = x wy +a i y wx Moreover, the graded normalization map n i : A i k[t i ] i the graded algebra homomorphim given by 0 if f i = x t i if f i = x x t i if f i = y y 0 if f i = y t wx i if f i = x wy +a i y wx b i t wy i if f i = x wy +a i y wx for 1 i r, where b i k i a olution of a i b wx i = 1. Since we have that à = à i, 1 i r there i an iomorphim à = k[t 1 ]... k[t r ] of graded k-algebra. We recall that the graded k-algebra k[t 1 ]... k[t r ] ha k-linear bae {t l i i = (0,...,t l i i,...,0) : 1 i r, l i N 0 }, multiplication given by t l i i t m j j = δ ij t l i+m j i for1 i,j r, l i,m j N 0, andk-algebratructure given by the diagonal map k k r. The grading of k[t 1 ]... k[t r ] i given by deg(t l i i ) = l i d i for 1 i r, l i N 0, hence it i a poitively graded k r -algebra. We may identify A with a graded ubring of k[t 1 ]... k[t r ] via the graded normalization map n : A Ã.
CONNECTIONS ON MODULES 5 3. Derivation Let k be an algebraically cloed field of characteritic 0, and let R be any graded k-algebra. We recall that the derivation module Der k (R) i the left R-module coniting of all k-linear operator Q : R R atifying the Leibniz rule Q(r) = Q(r)+rQ() for all r, R. We ay that a derivation Q Der k (R) i homogeneou of weight λ Z if Q(A w ) A w+λ for all w N. Let A = k[x,y]/(f) be a quai-homogeneou plane curve. It i wellknown that Der k (A) i generated, a a left A-module, by the Euler derivation E and the Kozul derivation D, given by E = w x x x +w y y y D = f y x f x y We write x = / x and y = / y for the partial derivation, and f x = x (f) and f y = y (f) for the partial derivative of f. We claim that any derivation P : A A ha a canonical extenion to a derivation P : Ã Ã. If r = 1, the claim follow from the graded verion of a theorem by Seidenberg (1966). If r > 1, any derivation P : A A induce a derivation P i : A i A i for 1 i r, ince E(f i ) = w i f i and D(f i ) = f i [ x (f i ) y (g i ) y (f i ) x (g i )] with g i = f/f i, and P = ( P 1,..., P r ) : Ã Ã i an extenion of P : A A. Lemma 2. We have that Ẽ = d 1t 1 1 + + d r t r r Der k (Ã), where i = / t i for 1 i r. Proof. TheEuler derivatione : A Aicharacterized by E(h) = w h for any homogeneou element h A of weight w. Since n : A Ã i a graded algebra homomorphim, it follow that Ẽ : Ã Ã can be characterized in the ame way, and Ẽ = d 1t 1 1 + +d r t r r. Let Γ i N 0 be the emigroup given by Γ i = {γ N 0 : t γ i A} for 1 i r, where we identify A with it image in Ã. Hence we have γ Γ i (0,...,t γ i,...,0) A for any γ N 0. We remark that if r > 1, then 0 Γ i for 1 i r, o Γ i hould be thought of a a emigroup without zero in that cae. It i clear that N 0 \ Γ i i finite for 1 i r, hence we may define c i = min{γ Γ i : γ + N 0 Γ i } to be the conductor of Γ i, and g i = c i 1 to be the Frobeniu number of Γ i.
6 EIVIND ERIKSEN Propoition 3. We have that D = β 1 t c 1 1 1+ +β r t cr r r Der k (Ã) for ome contant β 1,...,β r k, where i = / t i for 1 i r. Moreover, the conductor c i of Γ i i given by c i = w f w i d i +c(a i ) for 1 i r, where c(a i ) i the conductor of the irreducible quaihomogeneou curve A i. Proof. If r = 1, then it i well-known that D = β 1 t c 1 1 1 for ome β 1 k, ee for intance ection 6 of Eriken (2003). Hence we may aume that r > 1. Let g i = f/f i k[x,y] for 1 i r. It i clear that n I (g i ) = 0 if I i and that n i (g i ) 0. In fact, we ee that n i (g i ) k[t i ] i homogeneou of degree w w i, and therefore of the form wf wi n i (g i ) = β i t d i i Γ i. For 1 i r, we alo ee that any for ome β i k, hence w w i d i element h i k[x,y] with the property that n I (h i ) = 0 for I i mut be of the form h i = q g i with q k[x,y]. Therefore, c i = w w i d i +c(a i ), where c(a i ) i the conductor of A i. Explicitly, c(a i ) = 0 if f i = x or f i = y, and c(a i ) = (w x 1)(w y 1) otherwie. Ontheother hand, we ee that thederivationd i Der k (A i ) induced by the Kozul derivation D Der k (A) ha the form D i = g i ( y (f i ) x x (f i ) y ) for 1 i r. Since y (f i ) x x (f i ) y i the Kozul derivation on A i, it natural extenion to Ãi ha the form β i tc(a i) i i for ome contant β i k, ee for intance ection 6 of Eriken (2003). It follow that D i Der k (Ãi) ha the form D i = n i (g i ) β i tc(a i) i i = β i t ci i with β i = β i β i k. We remark that D = q Ẽ conidered a element in Derk(Ã), where q à i given by q = ( β 1 d 1 t g ) 1 βr 1,..., d r t gr r. In fact, q (A : m), where m = (x,y) A denote the maximal homogeneou ideal of A, and one may how that Der k (A) = (A : m) E. 4. Graded torion free module Let k be an algebraically cloed field, let A = k[x,y]/(f) be a quaihomogeneou plane curve, and let M be a finitely generated, graded A-module. If the natural map M M A Q(A) i injective, we ay
CONNECTIONS ON MODULES 7 that M i torion free. Notice that M i torion free if and only if it i maximal Cohen-Macaulay, i.e. depthm m = 1, where m = (x,y) A i the maximal homogeneou ideal of A. Lemma 4. If M i a torion free A-module, then we may identify M with a graded ubmodule of à i i = k[t1 ] 1 k[t r ] r, 1 i r where i 0 i the rank of M A A i a an A i -module for 1 i r. Proof. It i clear that M A A i ha a rank i 0 a an A i -module for 1 i r, ince Q(A i ) = k[t i,t 1 i ]. We have M A Q(A) = M A Q(A i ), 1 i r and M A Q(A i ) = (M A A i ) Ai Q(A i ) = Q(A i ) i for 1 i r. Hence the natural map M M A Q(A) = i Q(A i ) i identifie M with a graded ubmodule of i Q(A i ) i. Since M i finitely generated, we may identify M with a graded ubmodule of i à i i = i k[t i ] i by multiplying with a uitable denominator. For 1 i r, we chooe a et {e ij : 1 j i } of homogeneou generator for the graded Ãi-module Ãi i, and write f ij = deg(e ij ) Z for their weight. We conider {e ij : 1 i r, 1 j i } a a et of homogeneou generator for the graded Ã-module iãi i, where à act on i à i i via the projection π i : à Ãi for 1 i r. Let M i à i i be a graded ubmodule, let {m l : 1 l L} be a et of homogeneou generator of M, and write w l = deg(m l ) Z for their weight. Explicitly, m l i of the form m l = i,j a ij (l) e ij, for 1 l L, where a ij (l) Ãi i homogeneou of weight w l f ij for 1 i r, 1 j i. Let u write π i : i à i i Ãi i for the i th projection. We may aume that the generating et {m l : 1 l L} atify the following condition: (C1) For all 1 i r, 1 j i, there i a homogeneou generator m l with π i (m l ) = e ij In particular, condition (C1) implie that we may chooe et of homogeneou generator containing {e 1,...,e } when r = 1.
8 EIVIND ERIKSEN 5. Connection on graded module Let k be an algebraically cloed field of characteritic 0, and let R be any graded k-algebra. We define a connection on a graded R-module V to be an R-linear homomorphim : Der k (R) End k (V) that atifie the derivation property, i.e. D (rv) = r D (v)+d(r)v for all D Der k (R), r R, v V. We ay that i graded, or homogeneou of weight 0, if D (V w ) V w+λ for any homogeneou derivation D Der k (R) of weight λ and for any integer w Z, and that i integrable if it i a Lie algebra homomorphim. Let A = k[x,y]/(f) be a quai-homogeneou plane curve, and let M be a finitely generated, graded torion free A-module. We may aume that M i à i i i a graded ubmodule that atifie (C1). The Euler derivation E : A A ha a canonical extenion to a derivation Ẽ = (Ẽ1,...,Ẽr) : à Ã, and an induced k-linear action E End k ( i à i i )thatatifiethederivationproperty. Theinduced action E i characterized by E (h) = w h for any homogeneou element h i à i i of weight w. The Kozul derivation D : A A ha a canonical extenion to a derivation D = ( D 1,..., D r ) : à Ã, and D = q Ẽ in Derk(Ã) with q (A : m). Hence there i a unique extenion of the k-linear action E to a connection : Der k (A) End k (M), with induced k-linear action D End k ( i à i i ) given by D (h) = q E (h) = qw h for any homogeneou element h i à i i of weight w. We remark that i a graded integrable connection. Lemma 5. Let M i à i i be a graded ubmodule. If D (M) M, then induce a graded integrable connection on M. Foragradedubmodule M i à i i that atifie (C1), we conider the following condition: (C2) For 1 i r, 1 j i, we have t g i i e ij M (C3) For 1 i r, 1 j i, we have f ij = λ for ome λ Z. We remark that given a decription of M i à i i in concrete term, it i eay to check if the condition (C2) and (C3) hold. Lemma 6. Let M i à i i be a graded ubmodule. If M atifie (C1) and (C2), then D (M) M. Proof. Ifγ Γ i, thent γ i Abydefinition, hencecondition(c1)implie that t γ i e ij M. In particular, t γ i e ij M for all γ g i by (C1) and
CONNECTIONS ON MODULES 9 (C2). Ontheotherhand, thehomogeneougeneratorm l ofm ofweight w l ha the form m l = ij a ij(l) e ij for 1 l L, where a ij (l) Ãi i homogeneou of weight w l f ij 0 for 1 i r, 1 j i. Hence we have that D (m l ) = w l q m l M for 1 l L, and it follow that D (M) M. Lemma 7. Let M i à i i be a graded ubmodule. If M atifie (C1) and (C3), then D (M( λ)) M( λ). Proof. We may aume that λ = 0, hence w l = deg(m l ) 0 for all l. If w l = 0, then deg(a ij (l)) = w l f ij = 0 for all i,j, hence D (m l ) = 0. If w l > 0, then deg(a ij (l)) = w l f ij = w l > 0 for all i,j, hence qa ij (l) A and D (m l ) = ij w lqa ij (l) e ij M. In particular, if M i free and indecompoable, then we may identify M with the ubmodule of à = iãi generated by e 11 +e 21 + +e r1. Hence (C3) hold with λ = f 11 = = f r1, and there i a natural integrable graded connection on M( λ) by lemma 5 and lemma 7. Propoition 8. If A i irreducible and M i indecompoable and not free, then M atifie (C1) and (C2). Proof. Let M à be a graded ubmodule that atifie (C1). We may aume that the et {m l : 1 l L} of homogeneou generator of M atifie L > and m l = e l for 1 l. For l >, m l M ha the form m l = a j (l) e j 1 j where a j (l) à i homogeneou of weight deg(a j(l)) = w l f j for 1 j. We may aume that a j (l) = 0 when w l f j Γ, ince e j M. We may alo aume that a j (l) = 0 or a J (l) = 0 when j J and deg(a J (l)) deg(a j (l)) Γ, ince M i indecompoable. We claim that thee aumption imply that t g e j M for 1 j. In fact, a j (l) 0 for ome integer l >, otherwie A e j would be a direct ummand of M. By aumption, deg(a j (l)) Γ, and ince Γ i ymmetric, it follow that g deg(a j (l)) Γ and therefore that b = t g deg(a j(l)) A. Hence b m l M can be expreed a b m l = ct g e j + J j ba J (l) e J for ome c k. If a J (l) 0 for ome J j, then by aumption, deg(a j (l)) deg(a J (l)) Γ, and g (deg(a j (l)) deg(a J (l))) Γ. It follow that deg(ba J (l)) Γ and that ba J (l) A when J j and
10 EIVIND ERIKSEN a J (l) 0. Hence ba J (l) e J M for all J j, and thi implie that t g e j M. It eem probable that any indecompoable module M that i not freeatifie (C1) and(c2), even when Aha more thanone irreducible component, but we have not been able to find a proof in the general cae. To illutrate the combinatorial problem involved, we give an example. Thi example alo how that there are module of rank one that do not atify (C3). Let A = k[x,y]/(y(x n y m )) for ome natural number m,n N with (m,n) = 1. Then A = k[(t 1,t m 2 ),(0,tn 2 )] k[t 1] k[t 2 ] and the emigroup Γ i are given by Γ 1 = {n,n+1,n+2,...} Γ 2 = n,n+m,n+2m,...,n+(n 1)m with g 1 = n 1 and g 2 = mn m = m(n 1). Let M be a finitely generated graded torion free A-module of rank one, and aume that M i not free. Then we may aume that M ha a et of homogeneou generator containing one of the following et: (1) {e 11 +e 21,t h 2 e 21} for h N\Γ 2 (2) {e 11 +t h 2 e 21,e 21 } for h N\ m,n In the firt cae, we ee that g 2 h m,n, hence there i an element a = (,t g 2 h 2 ) A and a t h 2 e 21 = t g 2 2 e 21 M. In fact, h n m,n ince h Γ 2, hence g(a 2 ) (h n) = g 2 h m,n. Moreover, (t 1,t m 2 )n 1 (e 11 +e 21 ) = t g 1 1 e 11 +t g 2 2 e 21 M. It follow that condition (C2) hold. In the econd cae, (t 1,t m 2 )n 1 e 21 = t g 2 2 e 21 M, and (t 1,t m 2 )n 1 (e 11 + t h e 21 ) = t g 1 1 e 11 + t g 2+h 2 e 21 M. Since g 2 + h Γ 2, it follow that condition (C2) hold. We conclude that (C2) hold in both cae, while (C3) hold only in the firt cae. Theorem 9. Let A = k[x,y]/(f) be a quai-homogeneou plane curve, and let M be a finitely generated graded torion free A-module. If A i irreducible or a imple curve ingularity, then there i a natural graded integrable connection on M. Proof. If M i a free and indecompoable, then M admit a natural integrable connection by the comment following lemma 7. By lemma 5 and 6, it i therefore enough to how that there i a graded embedding M i à i i uch that condition (C1) - (C2) hold when M i indecompoable and non-free. Hence the theorem follow from propoition 8 when A i irreducible. When A i a imple curve ingularity with more than one irreducible component, it i traight-forward to verify
REFERENCES 11 that (C2) hold in each cae, uing the complete lit of indecompoable module given in the appendix of Greuel and Knörrer (1985). 6. Connection on module over curve ingularitie Let k be an algebraically cloed field of characteritic 0, and let A = k[x,y]/(f) be a quai-homogeneou plane curve. We denote it m-adic completion by B = Â = k[[x,y]]/(f), where m = (x,y) A i the maximal homogeneou ideal of A. Hence B i the complete local ring of a quai-homogeneou plane curve ingularity. If M i a graded torion free A-module, then M i a torion free B-module. We ay that a torion free B-module N i gradable if there i a graded torion free A-module M uch that M = N. We remark that by theorem (15.14) in Yohino (1990) and the fact that the imple curve ingularitie have finite CM repreentation type, it follow that any torion free module over a imple curve ingularity i gradable. Corollary 10. Any torion free module over the complete local ring of a imple curve ingularity admit a natural integrable connection. Corollary 11.
