EFFECTIVEU, A NON-NANOMETRIC INORGANIC SUNSCREEN. ADParticles has developed EffectiveU, an inorganic composite with properties suitable for use as UV filter in cosmetic. The particle-siz e distribution of EffectiveU is not in the nanometer range (1-100nm) and it provides a high level of UVA and UVB protection. EffectiveU consists of a composite of TiO2 and SiO2, developed by ADParticles patented technology. EffectiveU provides broad band UV protection and offers safety and efficacy to the final formula. The particle siz e distribution was determined by Dinamic Light Scattering (DLS), a characterization technique that utilizes the properties of both light scattering and Brownian motion in order to obtain the particle number size distribution of samples. 2 www.ad- particles.com technical@ad- particles.com Based on CSIC license.

FORMULATION GUIDELINES. The current formulation was used with 5, 7.5, 10 and 12% of filter (w/w). Experimental procedure: Ingredients dispersion in Phase I and heating to 60 C. Addition of EffectiveU with the help of a turbine mixer, at high speed, and homogenization during 10 minutes. Heating to 75 C. Phase II ingredients melting and heating to 75 C. Emulsion of Phase II over Phase I, at 75 C, by using a high speed turbine. Cold down the emulsion and slow addition of the Phase III under stirring. 4 www.ad- particles.com technical@ad- particles.com Based on CSIC license.
UV ABSORPTION SPECTRUM. SPF: 9,0 UVA PF: 6,6 Ratio UVA/UVB: 0,84 Ratio UVAI/UVB: 0,88 Critical wavelength: 383 nm The analysis was performed with a spectrophotometer equipped with a Xenon CW lamp of 125W operating at 75W (SPF-290S Analyzer System). The filter concentration in the final formula was 7,5% (w/w). 5 www.ad- particles.com technical@ad- particles.com Based on CSIC license.
SPF and UVA PF Evaluation. SPF and UVA PF are presented for increasing concentrations of EffectiveU filter in formula. SPF and UVA PF values were obtained from UV absorption spectra. The analyses were performed with a spectrophotometer equipped with a Xenon CW lamp of 125W operating at 75W (SPF-290S Analyzer System). The filter concentrations in the final formulas were 5, 7.5, 10 and 12% (w/w). www.ad- particles.com technical@ad- particles.com Based on CSIC license. 6
PHOTOSTABILITY. Photostability test was performed to evaluate the SPF variation after irradiation of the sample with UV light. The irradiations were performed with an Oriel LCS-100 TM Small Area Sol1A (Solar Simulator) equipped with a Xenon CW lamp of 100W that generates 1 Sun irradiance with an AM1.5G Filter (surface power density 166 mw/cm2). A specific filter for UVA-UVB radiation was used. SPF measurements were performed before and after 1, 2, 3 and 4 hours of irradiation with a spectrophotometer equipped with a Xenon CW lamp of 125W operating at 75W (SPF-290S Analyzer System) After 4 irradiation sessions of 1 hour no SPF decrease was observed. The photostability value is higher than 80%, therefore EffectiveU is considered to be photostable (Garoli et al. J. Dermatol. Sci. 52 (3), 193-204). The filter concentration in the sample was 7,5% (w/w). 7 www.ad- particles.com technical@ad- particles.com Based on CSIC license.
