Pre-conference field trip (FT1) Geology and mineral deposits of New Caledonia OVERVIEW: This trip is a rare opportunity to visit New Caledonia in northern Zealandia, a tropical paradise, and explore key aspects of its geology, its mining history and its mines. We will visit all tectonostratigraphic units, embracing the oldest and youngest rocks and sediments (beaches), as well as visit a number of active nickel and chromite mines. LEADERS: Dr Hamish Campbell (GNS Science), Dr Pierre Maurizot (Geological Survey of New Caledonia - SGNC: Service Géologique de Nouvelle Calédonie) and Professor Dominique Cluzel (University of New Caledonia). Hamish Campbell is a Senior Scientist with GNS Science (Lower Hutt). He has 40 years experience exploring the geology of Zealandia and did his MSc (Auckland, 1979) in New Caledonia and has continued research projects there in collaboration with local geologists. START: Arrive Nouméa, Sunday 24 March, 2019 for commencement of field trip the following morning. (Flight to New Caledonia at participants own expense). END: Finishes at La Tontouta International Airport, Nouméa, Monday 1 April, departing at 11.10am to Auckland (flight at participants own expense). DURATION: Seven days PROVISIONAL ITINERARY Sunday 24 March: Travel to New Caledonia; settle in to Noumea. Overnight: Hotel Le Paris, Noumea. Monday 25 March: Day in Noumea; visit SGNC, SLN, and local geology. Overnight: Hotel Le Paris, Noumea

Tuesday 26 March: Drive 288 km north up west coast to Kone. Overnight: Hotel Koniambo, Kone. Wednesday 27 March: Drive 82 km to Koumac. Day at Tiebaghi chromite and nickel mine. Overnight: Monitel de Koumac, Koumac. Thursday 28 March: Drive 180 km from Koumac to Poindimié. Overnight: Hotel Tieti, Poindimié. Friday 29 March: Drive 190 km from Poindimié to La Foa. Overnight: Hotel Banu, La Foa. Saturday 30 March: Visit Ile Hugon, Baie de St Vincent, by boat from Bouraké; chromite sands. Overnight: Hotel Banu, La Foa. Sunday 31 March: La Foa to La Tontouta (65 km). Monday 1 April: Flight from Noumea to Auckland, depart at 11.10am. INCLUDED: Road transport (by minibus), during the field trip Meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) for 7 days Accommodation (twin share) for 7 nights Boat trip from Bouraké to Ile Hugon, in Baie de St Vincent (and return) NOT INCLUDED: Alcohol and daytime snacks SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: A moderate level of fitness is required. Sturdy footwear is essential and wet weather gear, sun hat and sunscreen are advised. You should arrange for travel and medical insurance before travelling to New Caledonia, because many medical services are not free to overseas visitors.
