What you Expect and What you Get

Weather and Climate What is Weather? Weather is the state of the atmosphere, to the degree that it is hot or cold, wet or dry, calm or stormy, clear or cloudy. Weather reflects short term conditions in the atmosphere. Weather Statements: 1. Yesterday, it was sunny at school 2. Today, it rained heavily in the morning.

What is Climate? Climate is the average weather conditions in a certain place over many years. For example, the Northern part of Nigeria has a hotter climate than the Southern part. The climate of Nigeria is the tropical wet and dry type. Two main seasons: Wet and dry season 1. Rainy seasons; this is longest in the south and 2. Dry season: this is longest in the north

Weather Versus Climate WEATHER happens over a period of hours or days. Helps you decide what clothes to wear everyday What we get CLIMATE Happens over many years Helps you decide what clothes to buy What we expect May 2016 @ UNN May 2016 @ UNN 12:noon

WEATHER IS: Short term Limited area Can change rapidly Difficult to predict WEATHER is what s happening outside your window right now.

CLIMATE is the average of many years of weather observation. CLIMATE IS: Long term Wide area Seasonal changes Measured over long spans of time

Activity 1: Look at the person next to you and him or her about extreme weather events they have experienced. Look outside and tell the person what the weather is like, right now. Hint: heavy downpour, where? What was your reaction? Thunderstorm, hot weather, etc. Time: 3 minutes

Greenhouse Gases are essential to our climate http://www.larryjzimmerman.com/wproblems/warming/greenhouse. gif

Green House Effect In a way, the earth is like a glasshouse. The earth has some very important gasses in the atmosphere that keeps us warm. Some of these gases are water vapour, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane. When the sun heats the earth, these gases keep the heat on the earth's surface. Without these gases, heat would escape back into space and Earth s average temperature would be about 60 F colder

Have you heard about how the earth is getting hotter and the rate of flood increasing? Can you see how hot it is getting?

"Climate change" affects more than just a change in the weather, it refers to seasonal changes over a long period of time. Some short-term climate change is normal, but longer-term trends now indicate a changing climate.

Climate Change is a Long-Term Lasting Change in the Climate Patterns of an Area. It is different than daily weather changes. Climate change happens slowly over thousands and millions of years.

Causes of Climate Change NATURAL CAUSES Volcanic eruptions

Ocean Currents

HUMAN CAUSES (Anthropogenic or Manmade causes) Greenhouse gases Deforestation Coal mining Burning of fossil fuels Industrial processes Agriculture

GREENHOUSE GASES The earth has some very important gasses in the atmosphere that keeps us warm. Some of these gases are water vapour, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane. When the sun heats the earth, these gases keep the heat on the earth's surface. Without these gases, heat would escape back into space and Earth s average temperature would be about 60 F colder.

There are two main effects of deforestation on global warming: 1) the "slash and burn" technique used to clear the forest releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and 2) destruction of living trees reduces the amount of photosynthesis, a process that removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it in the plants as carbon. Deforestation

THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE Poverty: Harsh weather causing drought can affect our parents farming business. Sickness: Severe Weather events (eg. Release of toxic air pollutants) as a result of climate change can cause sickness in children and adults. Death: People with health issues (eg. asthma or cardiovascular disease.) can easily die off during harsh or stormy weather.

Summary of the effects of climate change As the world warms, people could suffer hunger, water shortages and coastal flooding. As rains fail, crops will wither and livestock will die, exposing children to starvation and diminishing water supplies for drinking and hygiene. http://www.unicef.org/publications/files/cl imate_change_and_children.pdf

Summary of the effects of climate change According to the World Health rganization, in 2000, climate change was estimated to be responsible for approximately 2.4 % of worldwide diarrhoea and 6 per cent of malaria in some middle-income countries http://www.unicef.org/publications/files/cl imate_change_and_children.pdf

Summary of the effects of climate change Children are more likely than adults to perish during natural disasters or succumb to malnutrition, injuries or disease in the aftermath. Natural disasters may force children out of their homes or even their countries. They may become orphaned or separated from their families, and may be preyed upon by opportunistic adults. http://www.unicef.org/publications/files/climat e_change_and_children.pdf

Summary of the effects of climate change By 2020, climate change is projected to expose an estimated 75 million people in Africa 5 alone to increased water stress. http://www.unicef.org/publications/files/cl imate_change_and_children.pdf

Natural Disaster: Destruction of Homes

Smoke in the home leads to the deaths of nearly 800,000 children each year. Newborns and infants are often carried on their mother s back while she is cooking, or kept close to the warm hearth. As a result, they spend many hours breathing polluted air during their first year of life just when their developing airways and their immune systems make them particularly vulnerable

The world is finally waking up to this global challenge, and it is time for Children like you to take the global challenge! Together we can Fix this!

What can you Do to Stop Global Climate change and what can we do to help?

Green your transport: Use bicycles, skateboards. Learn to walk.

Do not waste water. Turn off the Tap after use!

Plant a tree Today! Wow! This will reduce the CO2 in the atmosphere Dad, why is this tree taller than I am?

Planting trees on top of mountains without watering them and nurturing them is like expecting a baby to be born from a mother taking contraceptives.girl, age 16, Harar, Ethiopia

Unplug all electrical appliances after use. Eg. Phones, electric iron, kettle, etc.

Use Energy Bulbs to reduce emission of heat.

Summary of actions 1. Use sustainable energy: Using sustainable energy in your home helps prevent carbon emissions and has various co-benefits, like saving money. 2. Green your Transport: Walk and trek 3. Save Water 4. Support sustainable agriculture and diets Sustainable agriculture can help mitigate climate change and build food security. 5. Raise your voice and awareness: After this workshop, start conversations with others (classmates, family members, church members, etc) about climate change to help raise awareness and inspire action.

Summary of actions contd 6. Take a pledge with your family members to protect the Earth 7. Plant trees and protect biodiversity 8. Go Meat-free once a week 9. Learn more about Climate Change. Learning is a continuous process 10. Organize discussion groups in your classes 11. Listen to television and radio programmes on Climate change and make your contributions.

Suggestions The government should introduce Climate Change as a subject in primary and secondary schools Climate Change events should be organized occasionally in schools and churches for children University Women Association can organize Green Christmas Party for children Climate Change Competitions should be organized for children to boost their climate literacy

Suggestions Climate Change Club (C3) should be introduced in schools for children Conferences and workshops on climate change should be organized Quiz and Essay competitions on climate change should be organized for children

BRAINSTORMING SESSION with children [Group presentation] How does Climate Change Affect your Community? As a growing child, how would you get involved in this Global Challenge? What do you suggest to everyone (Government, people, churches and schools, children, parents) regarding Climate Change?

Summary Sheet Questions Do you now know about climate change? Can you now differentiate between weather and climate? Have you learnt about the Greenhouse gases? Can you list the causes of Climate change and its effects? Are you ready to take the Global Action against climate change? Did you enjoy the lesson?

Unless you empower people, you inform them, and you help them understand that these resources are their own, and they must protect them. Now is the time to put those words into action!

How do I help? Consuming less energy helps reduce air pollution Turn the lights off when you leave a room If alternative energy sources such as solar or wind are available, use them. Use nonpolluting stoves. Avoid using kerosene to cook, heat or provide light Paint with a brush instead of a sprayer. Plant a tree to help purify the air. Turn off office equipment (i.e., computers, printers and fax machines) after hours. Start an environmental program yourself

BECOME ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE!

TAKE HOME Choose any of these Essay topics and write 100 words on your topic. 1. What can I do as a kid to slow down climate change? 2. What will happen if we ignore this global climate challenge? 3. Is it true that people are causing the climate to change? 4. How can adults explain climate change to kids? 5. Why has the rate of sickness in children increased in recent time? 6. How can deforestation cause climate change? 7. How can climate change affect Nigeria? 8. How can my country help children combat climate change? 9. How can the University Women Association, UNN can help the community kids in the environmental challenge?
