MSIP Proposal 2013 Nebraska City Lourdes Central Catholic Mrs. Falcone s 6 th Grade Science
INTRODUCTION Our science question: Is more ice in older or new craters in the mid-latitudes? It is important because the tilt may have changed, it s a potential current water source, it potentially tells us how old the ice, And it helps us understand the geology of the area
Our hypotheses: If there was more ice in new craters than old, then the tilt of Mars did not effect ice in craters. If more ice appears in new craters than old craters, then the ice in the older craters had more time to melt.
Background
Ice Craters Anna, Johnny, Mackenzie, Natalie W., and Piper.
Mars, the red planet, unharmed of any craters Then, suddenly, a meteor is flying straight towards mars.
Here is the aftermath of the meteor. Here are some examples of craters. The top is the ice crater, the bottom is a regular crater.
Tilt This is the basics on the mars tilt and rotation. The tilt also can affect the seasons in mars. V.S.
Between 13 and 40 degrees over timescales of about 10 to 20 million. Ice frozen in crater at high tilt remains in crater when the tilt lessens.

EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN We will use: THEMIS images taken with the HiRISE camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
Geologic Features of Study: Craters, ice, and gullies formed on craters at the midlatitudes Because that was our research question
WEBSITES TOOLS JMARS www.themis.asu.edu.org pictures Using these to analyze pictures of craters with ice
HOW MANY THEMIS IMAGES WILL YOU NEED TO GATHER IN ORDER TO ANSWER YOUR SCIENCE QUESTION? 15 images 5: Preserved Craters 5: Modified Craters 5: Destroyed Craters
RECORDED INFORMATION Image identification # (V#): This will allow us and other scientists to reexamine the images we observed to check our data. Latitude and longitude: This will allow us to map where each image we examine is located Size of crater: This will allow us to see if crater size has more of an affect on ice Age classification: This will allow us to compare ages of craters. Mass of ice: This will allow us to see if Presence of gullies: This will allow us to see if water was there in the past.
MEASUREMENTS AND TECHNIQUES The width of the crater using the scale of the image Amount of ice using HEND and scale calculations
Analysis Plan Image ID # La*tude (N) Longitude (E) Crater Classifica*on Crater Diameter Size (km) Amount of Ice Gullies
Graphs Column graphs Amount of ice vs. crater classification Indicates which age classification of craters has most ice Scatter Graph Amount of ice vs. crater size Indicates if larger craters have most ice
CONCLUSION Our science question: Is more ice in older or new craters in the mid-latitudes? Our hypotheses: If there was more ice in new craters than old, then the tilt of Mars did not effect ice in craters. If more ice appears in new craters than old craters, then the ice in the older craters had more time to melt.
WHY THIS IS ALL THIS IMPORTANT? the tilt may have changed, it s a potential current water source, it potentially tells us how old the ice, And it helps us understand the geology of the area
