ITQ ARTS AND SCIENCE INTEGRATION GRADE 3 DANCE AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE Energy n the Mve: Transfer and Waves Lessn 2 CONTENT STANDARDS Dance 5.1 Explain relatinships between dance elements and ther subjects (e.g., spatial pathways maps and grids, gemetric shapes bdy shapes). Physical Science PS1d Students knw energy can be carried frm ne place t anther by waves, such as water waves and sund waves, by electric current, and by mving bjects. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS Hw des energy mve frm ne place t anther? Hw can I shw hw energy mves? OBJECTIVES & STUDENT OUTCOMES Students will distinguish between, describe, explre, and demnstrate thrugh mvement, transfer f energy and energy waves. ASSESSMENT (Varius strategies t evaluate effectiveness f instructin and student learning) Feedback fr Teacher Student respnse t inquiry Student perfrmance Feedback fr Student Teacher feedback Perfrmance WORDS TO KNOW energy transfer: The mvement f energy frm ne thing t anther r the change f energy frm ne frm t anther.. lcmtr mvement: mvement that takes a dancer frm pint A t pint B (walking, running, leaping, skipping, and gallping are examples f lcmtr mvement). shape: A psitin f the bdy in space. A shape can be still r mving. stred energy: Energy available fr use. wave: A regular, repeating pattern, such as an cean wave r a sund wave. MATERIALS Hand drum r ther percussive instrument CD Player and Music Scarves (2) RESOURCES Music fr Creative Dance by Eric Chappelle FOSS Kit Grade 3, Physical Science: Matter and Energy, Investigatin 1: Energy, Part 3 PREPARATION 1
Make enugh space in the classrm fr students t mve safely. Teach FOSS Kit Grade 3, Physical Science: Matter and Energy, Investigatin 1: Energy, Part 3 WARM UP (Engage students, access prir learning, review, hk r activity t fcus the student fr learning) (5 minutes) Review gestures fr mtin, heat and light. Review wrking energy and stred energy. Say: I am ging t teach yu an Energy Dance Chant t help yu remember what energy is and what it des. Pst the chant: Say: Energy causes actin and makes things happen. Repeat several times having students say the chant until it is memrized. Teach the mvement: 1. Step ut t the right in a lunge, place right arm in a high diagnal, left arm is bent at elbw acrss chest (lks like a lightening blt) (Energy causes) 2. Step back t left ft, rll arms (actin that) 3. Clap 2 times (makes things) 4. Jump high int the air (happen). 5. Repeat chant and mvement several times until memrized. MODELING (Presentatin f new material, demnstratin f the prcess, direct instructin) (10 minutes) Pst new vcabulary and discuss: energy transfer, waves Discuss shape with students. Practice making several different kinds f frzen shapes (twisted, flat, large, small, curved, mving shapes, etc.). Prcedure: Arrange students in a circle r a line (depending n available space). Create a shape in stillness (e.g., standing, feet tgether, bdy tucked at a medium level); this shape will represent stred energy (energy waiting t happen). The energy transfer will be shwn by student ne jumping up then gently tuching the shulder f the student n his r her right, then returning t the stred energy shape t cmplete the mtin. Student tw will then jump, pass the energy t student three and return t the stred energy shape. Cntinue until all students have transferred the energy. Perfrming the exercise. One half f the class will perfrm the energy transfer. The ther half will say and perfrm the chant. All students begin at dancer s ready psitin. Say: 1. Stred energy [Grup ne perfrming students are in tucked shape.] 2. Chant [Grup tw students perfrm the chant.] 3. Energy transfer [Grup ne students pass the energy and return t stred energy shape.] 4. Switch grups and repeat using a different mvement. What is energy? [makes things happen, causes actin] What is energy transfer? [energy mving frm n thing t anther] Where can we find surces f stred energy? [batteries, fd, fuel] GUIDED PRACTICE (Presentatin f new material, demnstratin f the prcess, direct instructin) (30 minutes) Say: Mving bjects can als carry energy frm the place t anther. In dance, we use 2
lcmtr mvement t mve ur bdies frm ne place t anther. Can yu think f ways t mve yur bdy frm ne place t anther? [Run, walk, rll, skip, hp, jump, gallp, leap, etc.] Let s demnstrate this with bwling frm yur investigatin in science. We are ging t use ur bdies t shw hw energy transfers frm ne place t anther by mving bjects. Bwling Demnstratin Setting it up Select eight student vlunteers. Student A is the bwler, student B tis the ball and six students will be the pins. The rest f the class will perfrm the chant and identify stred energy, energy transfer and surce f energy. Begin with the thrwer psitined behind the ball. Ask: Hw can yu make yur bdy like a bwling ball? [The ball shuld be in a small, tight, curled shape n the flr.] Say: Shw me hw yu can rll like a bwling ball. [The student shuld rll like an egg in a tucked psitin.] Bwling Demnstratin Prcedure: All perfrmers begin in still shapes. Ask: Where is the stred energy? [in the muscles f the thrwer] What will be the energy surce? [The bwler s mving hand/arm.] Student bservers say the chant and the actin starts. Student A starts by placing ne hand n student B and gently pushes student B int mtin. The student as the ball starts rlling tward the pins and the yarn is lengthening as it mves. The ball gently bumps int the frnt pin shwing the transfer f energy frm ball t pin as the frnt pin falls. The pins fall gently t flr and the ball stps. Nte: If ne student as the bwling pin des nt get tuched by either the ball r anther pin, then that student did nt receive any energy transfer and shuld nt fall. What was the rder f the energy transfer starting with the persn wh threw the bwling ball? [The energy transferred frm the bwler s arm t the ball which made the ball rll. The ball transferred the energy t the pins by hitting them and making them fall dwn.] What frm f energy is the rlling f the ball and the falling f the pins? [Mtin] When the bwling pins fall, where did the energy transfer? [Accept student respnses. The energy wuld likely g int the flr r any ther bject the pins were tuching after they were hit.] Say: Energy ften travels in waves r in a current like electricity des thrugh metal wires. Can yu think f a place where yu have seen waves? [Ocean waves, ripples in a pnd] If the class is large, spilt the students int tw grups. One half will say and perfrm the chant while the ther half perfrms the wave. Switch grups ften. Say: We will nw create grup mvement t demnstrate energy transfer thrugh waves. Get int a semi-circle s yu can see each ther and stand shulder t shulder. When I say, stred energy, I want yu t say and perfrm the chant. Remember ur waves investigatin when we created waves with the pp We re ging t d the stadium wave like the fans d at a ftball game. Practice the wave frm ne end f the line t the ther until it mves smthly by raising and lwering arms). Remember ur waves investigatin when we created waves with ur ppsicle sticks? Say: When I say energy transfer, I will act like the stick and start the wave. Hld hands 3
but leave enugh rm fr yur arms t mve up and dwn freely. The first student that I tuch will start the wave and the wave will mve frm ne persn t the next. What happened in ur investigatin when the wave hit the end f the cntainer? [The wave came back t where it started.] Hw d yu think we culd represent that actin with ur mvement? [The persn n the end f the line needs t start the wave actin back t the starting pint.] Practice the wave until it mves smthly starting at ne end and cming back again. Say: This scarf represents a persn flating n the water. (Place the scarf n the jined hands f a cuple f students.) (Pinting t the scarf) What d yu think will happen t this persn as the wave arrives? [The persn will mve up and dwn with the wave.] Repeat the exercise again. Perfrm the chant. As the wave rises and falls, the scarf will rise and fall t. Switch grups. Hw did the energy travel frm pint A t pint B? [The energy traveled by a wave, energy transfer] Hw wuld yu describe hw a water wave travels? [Water waves travel up and dwn with a rlling mtin] DEBRIEF AND EVALUATE (Identify prblems encuntered, ask and answer questins, discuss slutins and learning that tk place. Did students meet expected utcmes?) (5 minutes) What is energy? [Energy causes actin that smething else t happen.] Besides a rlling ball, what ther kinds f bjects have mving energy? [A skatebard mving dwnhill, a falling ball r apple frm a tree, a persn running, etc.] What are sme examples f stred energy? [yur muscles, fd, battery, fuel (like gas) fr cars and wd fr fires] Hw can stred energy change int mving energy? [by rlling a ball, rlling dwnhill n a grassy bank, burning gasline t pwer a car, burning wd r cal t make a steam engine run t mve a train, mving yur bdy t exercise r d chres] Can yu name sme things that transfer energy? [Expect answers such as: a micrwave transfers energy t heat fd, car stere transfer sund, a bat transfers energy t a ball as in baseball, yur ft transfers energy t a ball as in sccer, etc.] EXTENSION (Expectatins created by the teacher that encurages students t participate in further research, make cnnectins and apply understanding and skills previusly learned t persnal experiences.) Simulate falling dmins. Have students kneel next t each ther in a line r curve. Start the energy transfer by gently tuching the end student. Each student will gently fall sideways while gently transferring the energy t the next student. Explre with a parachute and a ball. Have small grups explre hw electric current travels. Use dance vcabulary (pathway, directin) and create a shrt mvement sequence (e.g., switch turns n flw, electricity particles travel in a line in a certain directin, the bject turns n and mves, lights up r gives ff heat, and switch turns ff flw). Illustrate and label the steps f the dance. 4
