Interactive Science Notebook Interactive Science Notebook (ISN)? Student thinking tool. Organizes your inquiries (questions) & what you learned. A way to access & process your learning through various modalities (writing, drawing, & discussion). A place for writing drafts about in class assignments. Formative assessment tool for measuring your progress toward mastery of standards.
Interactive Science Notebook Why use an ISN? Improves organization skills. Improves critical thinking skills. Express comprehension in a creative way.
Why us? Interactive Science Notebook Record data. Record progress toward mastery of standards. Prepare for summative assessments. Communication.
Interactive Science Notebook Impact on student comprehension: Research shows that student understanding & literacy skills improve when students do student-centered science & use science notebooks to make sense of science investigations.

Distance/Length The basic unit of distance/length in the metric system is the meter & is represented by a lowercase m. Standard: The distance traveled by light in absolute vacuum is 1 299,792,458 of a second. Metric units: 1 Kilometer (km) = 1000 meters 1 Meter = 100 Centimeters (cm) 1 Meter = 1000 Millimeters (mm) Which is larger? 1 meter 105 centimeters 1200 millimeters 1 meter Adapted from the Science Spot @ link: Sciencespot.net

Entry Task Write down what you remember about calculating volume & area in your ISN (formula, meaning, etc.). Right side.
Agenda Housekeeping Mass Volume Area Metric Activity
Housekeeping Composition notebooks for ISN due. Restroom sign out roster. Include name, date, time out, & time of return Friday, 15 Sep. PM assembly schedule Homecoming football game
Mass English (Standard) vs. Metric System. 1 pound = 453.6 grams 1 ounce of gold = 28,349.5 milligrams 100 kilogram = 220 pounds Adapted from the Science Spot @ link: Sciencespot.net
Mass Mass = the amount of matter in an object. The base unit of mass in the metric system is the gram & is represented by g. Standard: 1 kilogram is equal to the mass of the International Prototype Kilogram (IPK), a platinum-iridium cylinder kept by the BIPM at Sèvres, France. Kilogram Prototype Metric Units: 1 Kilogram (kg) = 1000 Grams (g) 1 Gram (g) = 1000 Milligrams (mg) Adapted from the Science Spot @ link: Sciencespot.net
Mass We will be using digital scales to find the mass of various objects. Our scales will measure to the nearest?
Compare using <, >, or =. Mass 31) 10.56 g = cg = mg 32) 157 mg = dg = g 33) 3 kg = g = cg 34) 5 kg 49.3 g 35) 32 mg 3.1 g 36) 280 g 0.28 kg
Volume English (Standard) vs. Metric System. 1 fl oz = 29.573 ml 1x 12 oz can of soda would = approx. 355 ml. 1 gallon = 3.79 liters 1 quart = 0.946 liters It would take approximately 3 3/4 1 liter bottles to = one gallon. Adapted from the Science Spot @ link: Sciencespot.net
Volume Volume = the amount of space an object takes up. The base unit of volume in the metric system in the liter & is represented by L. Standard: 1 liter is equal to 1 cubic decimeter Metric Units: 1 liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (ml) 1 milliliter (ml) = 1 cm 3 (or cc) = 1 gram* Which is larger? 1 L 1500 ml 200 ml 1.2 L 12 cm 3 1.2 ml* Adapted from the Science Spot @ link: Sciencespot.net
Volume Measuring volume. We will be using graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids & other objects. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? ml Adapted from the Science Spot @ link: Sciencespot.net
Volume Measuring volume. What causes the meniscus? A concave meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid attract to those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides. Adapted from the Science Spot @ link: Sciencespot.net
Volume What is the volume of water in each cylinder? Pay attention to the scales for each cylinder. Adapted from the Science Spot @ link: Sciencespot.net Images created at http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/primaryframework/downloads/swf/measuring_cylinder.swf
Volume Measuring solid volume. 8 cm 9 cm We can measure the volume of regular object using the formula length x width x height. x x = 10 cm We can measure the volume of irregular object using water displacement. Amount of H 2 O with object = ml Amount of H 2 O without object = ml Difference = Volume = ml Adapted from the Science Spot @ link: Sciencespot.net http://resources.edb.gov.hk/~s1sci/r_s1science/sp/en/syllabus/unit14/new/testingmain1.htm
Area Area = the number of square units needed to cover an area. Area is represented in meters (m) & since two length measurements are used the increment is m 2. An area usually contains 3 basic shapes: Square (a = l x h) Triangle (a = (1/2)bh) Circle (a = πr 2 ) Adapted from the Science Spot @ link: Sciencespot.net

Housekeeping Today is a PM assembly schedule. Announcement by class will be made at the end of period 6. Homecoming football game
Lab Activity Gummy Bear Lab. Collect day 2 data & complete your table, including calculations. Do NOT dry your gummy bear, only dab to remove excess water. Be sure to wipe off scale & zero before & after use. When finished throw gummy bear & tape in the trash, then rinse & wipe out cup. Complete the Metric Measurement Lab worksheet. All data tables must be copied into your ISN. Be sure to include design sketches of both labs.
