The State of the Arctic
Arctic Research in the United States The Arctic Research and Policy Act of 1984 created.. 1. The U.S. Arctic Research Commission (USARC) to promote Arctic research and recommend Arctic research policy, and 2. The Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee (IARPC), chaired by NSF, to develop U.S. Arctic research policy and prepare a 5-year plan (the Arctic Research Plan) to implement the policy. 3. Since 2011 IARPC has been a working group of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) managed by the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the White House.
Arctic Research Plan 2017-2021 Goals 1. Health and Well-being of Arctic Residents 2. Atmospheric Composition and Dynamics 3. Changing Arctic Sea Ice Cover 4. Structure and Function of the Arctic Marine Ecosystem 5. Glaciers, Ice Caps & the Greenland Ice Sheet and Sea Level 6. Permafrost Dynamics 7. Terrestrial and Freshwater Ecosystems 8. Coastal Community Resilience 9. Environmental Intelligence for Decision Support Observing Systems Data Systems Models Goals have. 1. Research Objectives 2. Performance Elements Policy Drivers 1. Enhance the well-being of Arctic residents 2. Advance stewardship of the Arctic environment 3. Strengthen national and regional security 4. Improve understanding of the Arctic as a component of planet Earth
