MATH 2203 - Exam 2 (Version 1) Solutions September 23, 2014 S. F. Ellermeyer Name Instructions. Your work on this exam will be graded according to two criteria: mathematical correctness and clarity of presentation. In other words, you must know what you are doing (mathematically) and you must also express yourself clearly. In particular, write answers to questions using correct notation and using complete sentences where appropriate. Also, you must supply sufficient detail in your solutions (relevant calculations, written explanations of why you are doing these calculations, etc.). It is not sufficient to just write down an answer with no explanation of how you arrived at that answer. As a rule of thumb, the harder that I have to work to interpret what you are trying to say, the less credit you will get. You may use your calculator but you may not use any books or notes. 1. The position vector, at time t, of a particle in motion in the xy plane is given by r t ti 4t 4t 2 j. a. Find the path of motion of the particle. (Explain and draw a picture.) b. Find the velocity vector, v t, at any time t. c. Find the speed at any time t. d. Find the acceleration vector, a t, at any time t. e. In the picture that you drew in part a, draw the position vector and the velocity vector at time t 0. Do the same at time t 1. Solution: Parametric equations for the path of motion are x t y 4t 4t 2. We thus see that the path of motion is the parabola y 4x 4x 2 or The velocity vector is and the speed is y 4x 2 4x. v t i 4 8t j v t 1 2 4 8t 2 1 16 64t 64t 2 64t 2 64t 17. The acceleration vector is a t 8j. At time t 0, the position and velocity vectors are r 0 0 and v 0 i 4j. At time t 1, the position and velocity vectors are r 1 i and v 1 i 4j. The picture below illustrates.

2. The velocity vector, at time t, of a particle in motion in the xy plane is given by v t i and the particle is located at the point 1,3 at time t 0. a. Find the position vector of the particle at time t. b. Sketch the path of motion of the particle. c. Where is the particle located at time t 4? d. Will the particle ever reach the point 1, 2? If so, then at what time will this happen? Solution: The position vector is r t ti C where C is a constant vector. At time t 0wehave r 0 C i 3j. Thus r t t 1 i 3j. Parametric equations for the path of motion of the particle are x t 1 y 3. Thus the path of motion of the particle is the line y 3. At time t 4, the particle is located at the point 5,3. It will not reach the point 1, 2 because the line y 3 does not pass through that point. 3. A woman stands 20 feet away from a box of width 5 feet and height 3 feet (See Diagram) and tosses a bean bag hoping to get it to land in the box. She tosses the bean bag from an initial height of 3 feet and with an initial angle of 15 and with an initial speed of 48

feet/sec. Does the bean bag land in the box or does she miss? (Assume that the only vertical force that acts on the bean bags during their flight is the acceleration due to gravity. Thus assume that a t 32j.) Be detailed in your solution. Write in sentences. Solution: Sincea t 32j, wehave v t 32tj C where C is a constant vector. Also, if the initial speed is 45, then the initial velocity vector is v 0 48cos 15 i 48sin 15 j. Since v 0 C 48cos 15 i 48sin 15 j, we have v t 48cos 15 i 48sin 15 32t j. The position vector at time t is r t 48cos 15 ti 48sin 15 t 16t 2 j C where C is a constant vector. Since r 0 C 3j, we have r t 48cos 15 ti 48sin 15 t 16t 2 3 j. Parametric equations for the path of motion are x t 48cos 15 t y t 48sin 15 t 16t 2 3. In order for the bean bag to get into the box, we must have a value of t such that 20 x t 25 and y t 3. The equation y t 3isthesameas 48sin 15 t 16t 2 0 and this equation holds when t 0 (which is when the bean bag is first tossed) and when

t 48sin 15 3sin 15. 16 At this value of t we have x t 48cos 15 3sin 15 144sin 15 cos 15 72sin 30 36. This means that the bean bag sails over the box. See the figure below. 4. We know that a circle of radius 7 has curvature 1/7. The most obvious way to show this is to begin with the parameterization x 7cos t y 7sin t of the circle and to then use t T t v t to show that t 1/7. However, curvature does not depend on what parameterization of the curve we choose to use. We should get the answer t 1/7 using any parameterization of the circle of radius 7. Show that t 1/7 using the parameterization x 7cos e t y 7sin e t Solution: Wehave r t 7cos e t i 7sin e t j v t 7sin e t e t i 7cos e t e t j v t 7sin e t e t 2 7cos e t e t 2 7e t. The unit tangent vector is T t 1 v t v t sin et i cos e t j and thus T t cos e t e t i sin e t e t j and T t cos e t e t 2 sin e t e t 2 e t. The curvature is thus

t T t v t et 7e t 1 7. 5. A particle is moving along a helical path according to r t cos t i sin t j 3 tk. a. Find the tangential component of acceleration, a T t. b. Find the normal component of acceleration, a N t. Solution: The velocity vector is v t sin t i cos t j 3 k and the speed is v t v t sin t 2 cos t 2 3 2 2. The acceleration vector is a t cos t i sin t j. The tangential component of acceleration is a T t v t 0 and the normal component of acceleration is a N t a t 2 a T t 2 1 0 2 1.
