What is Geopark? NO Geopark? YES

What is Geopark? The Geopark is an area where earth s history is experienced How do landscapes originate? What rocks and raw materials are found there? How does geology influence land use?

How the Geopark originates 1990 s Discussion: climate change, shortages of raw materials, i.e. UN conference in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 Raising environmental awareness (Agenda 21) Sustainable Management of the last planet resources Geo-parks as instruments for 1. protecting the geological natural heritage (minerals, stones, fossils, caves ) 2. boosting geo-education 3. establishing geo-tourism

Geopark Network 2013 2000 > 2004 2009 Global Geopark Network (GGN) since 2004 Multi-cultural bridge for the geological heritage Sponsorship/Coordination: UNESCO, no programme Evaluation Committee: independent group of experts Networking: conferences, publications, advertising Up-to-date: 29 Länder, 100 geo-parks

European Geopark Network since 2000 Germany => establishing member of EGN the oldest geo-park initiative in the world Specific provisions for German geo-parks: the first national geo-park since 2003 Geo-union Alfred-Wegener-Stiftung Federal Ministry for Education and Training EGN and GGN

National geo-parks Currently: 14 national geo-parks Geopark Ruhrgebiet founded in 2004 national geo-park since 2006
