I love buying 2 f bread from the local bakers especially when it s still warm and just out of the oven. I m a huge fan of Indian food but I don t like strong flavours so I ll always go for a 3 m curry. I tend to snack a lot in between meals especially different types of nuts, they are so 4 m, I think I m addicted! I got up really early, skipped breakfast which is very unlike me and I did it because I knew I was coming to possibly the best food market in London. I m absolutely starving so let s go and explore Borough Market. So I know what you re thinking English food is disgusting, fish and chips for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Well my friends I m here in Borough market to destroy this myth and to find out more about the place that is seen as the heart of London s food renaissance. A market has existed in this location, in the shadow of Southwark Cathedral next to London bridge since the 12 th century and its aim has always been to provide fresh produce for Londoners. These days a charitable trust runs the market and its mission statement quite simple; to ensure that the food here is both fresh and seasonal whilst also coming from sustainable and environmentally friendly sources. Part 2 2.00 3.26 Ok the first thing that strikes you about Borough Market is the diversity, there are stalls selling food from all over the world. You can try cheese from France one minute and tea from India the next. Perhaps mostly importantly it s the quality of food you can get in Borough Market that makes it so popular, it truly is a foodies heaven. Tom - Ok I m standing at Monn s fromagerie. Owner - I sell French cheeses, mainly sort of farmhouse and unpasteurized cheeses. They re matured in the south east of France and then we bring them over once a week. Well there s 15 different cheeses here ranging from quite creamy and mild and young to sort of mature stronger cheeses both soft and hard. Tom - Ok I m standing by the Cool Chilli Company stall, let s go speak to the owner. Owner - We sell chillies from Mexico, different types of chilli, different grades of heat and different chilli sauces. Tom - And what do you think makes Borough market so special? Owner - It has a reputation I think, it s a very old market but also they have unique products from all over the world. Part 3 3.38 4.44 Tom - I m at the Wyndham House Poultry Store could you talk us through your products please? Owner - Ok so we sell predominantly free-range chickens and we do free-range hot food chicken burgers and chicken wraps. Tom - And what makes these products so special and what kind of flavours do they have? Owner - Well what makes them so special is number one we make all the burgers ourselves and all the chicken is free-range and we make them to order so it s all fresh, predominantly locally sourced and that s about all to summarise. Tom - Yeah it smells amazing I have to say. How long have you been in the market for? Owner About for a good 8 years. Tom - And what makes Borough Market so special? I m now with my mate Ceinwen and it s the moment I ve been waiting for all day, it s time to taste the food. Part 4 4.52 6.55 Tom Ok, We re at the organic juice bar, I think we re going to go for the acai, how do you say that? Ceinwen - Acai. Tom - Acai which is a. Ceinwen - It s a Brazilian berry from the rainforest. Tom - Ok. Ceinwen - It s very rich in vitamin C. Tom - And we re going to have sort of apples, kiwis and bananas all sort of crushed together and blended into a smoothie. I m very excited. Ceinwen - I m excited too Tom. Tom Ok this is where Borough market gets very high class, we ve got oysters. Aphrodisiacs I believe Ceinwen. Ceinwen - They are apparently. Would you like to explain what an aphrodisiac is Tom? Tom - I think I ll let the listeners imagine what that might be but it helps. Ceinwen - It helps in the bedroom department. Tom - It does, again the smell is pretty strong. Do you want to sample one? Ceinwen - Really really good. It s got rocket in there, nice sauce on top. Tom - Yeah great sauce sort of peppercorn sauce. The sausage is really chewy. Ceinwen - Mine s a little bit tough actually. Tom - Really? Ceiwnen - Yeah but it s still a really nice flavour. Tom - It s also really tender, the meat s really tender and the bread s really doughy as well I find it s really sort of so edible so moreish. Ceinwen - Very flavoursome.
