Gleanings of Grace 1 John Lesson 23 1 John is a letter that provides great assurance to the believer. Throughout the letter, John used the word know, mostly the translation of the Greek word gnosko which means to know by experience, not simply intellectually. John presents various behaviors that prove our knowing and belonging to God. These behaviors should be consistent in the life of believers. We will not always find ourselves as God would have us and there are times we find ourselves where God would not have us. But our lifestyle will reflect lives that love God and love others. We are approaching this homework differently than our usual pattern as we will be looking at every verse in 1 John that contains the word know. May your study of this epistle produce in you a sweet assurance of who you are to Jesus. OBSERVATION: Scan the verses listed on the Observation Worksheet 1. Read through this week s verses using both your Observation Worksheet (the last page of this homework) and another Bible translation or paraphrase. After scanning these verses, what would you say to someone if they asked you what they are about? 2. Key words help us to better understand the verses. As the intention of this lesson is to understand what we as believers can know, mark the word know in each of the verses. Background: 1. According to 1 John 1:1-3, what are John s qualifications for writing this epistle? 2. Using the following verses, record why John declared that he wrote. 1 John 1:4 1 John 1:5 1 John 2:1 Jericho Road Christian Fellowship Women's Bible Studies 2017/2018

How does not keeping His commandments reveal that a person is a liar and the truth is not in him? c. The word perfected in verse 5 implies that the love of God has achieved its purpose in us. Read Ephesians 2:8-10 and explain what it means that we are saved through faith, but are saved for the purpose of doing good works. 2. 1 John 2:11 What is the result of hating a brother? a. In what ways have you experienced these results? 3. 1 John 2:18 According to verse 19, what is evidence of antichrist type behavior? 4. 1 John 2:20,21 We have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, to reveal truth and to expose deception. Observation Worksheet 1 John 1 John 2:3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 1 John 2:4 He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 1 John 2:5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 1 John 2:11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. 1 John 2:18 Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. 1 John 2:20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. 1 John 2:21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth. 1 John 2:29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him. 1 John 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 1 John 3:2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 1 John 3:5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. 1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 1 John 3:15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 1 John 3:16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 1 John 3:19 And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. 7

1 John 3:24 Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. 1 John 4:2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 1 John 4:6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. 1 John 4:8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 1 John 4:13 By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 1 John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 1 John 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. 1 John 5:15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. 1 John 5:18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. 1 John 5:19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one. 1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 8
