The rock lithologies range from a fine-grain basalt/andesite to a vesicular basalt. You can rip some of the material, but most likely you would need to drill and blast the rock. This can be a large quantity of rock depending on the property boundaries.there is very good screening from the highway with plenty of room to work. We might want to think about installing a berm between the Salmon River and the pit floor at this site if we ever open it back up. Some of the aggregate should be evaluated for elongated pieces due to the fine-grain nature of the rock. This is leased ground from the BLM. Closed North across I-84 is the Columbia River. Adjacent Land Use State Park/One residence adjacent to the east. Remarks This site is located about 100 meters south of I-84. The property is a talus slope with angular softball size basalt. There is no overburden, no room to work, and some screening. The access to this site is very limited and should be evaluated if we wish to open this site back up. The original easement was from I-84 which appears to be not available any more. This site sits within the Scenic Gorge Area. Adjacent Land Use Forest/Farming Remarks The property is located at the junction of Highway 35 and the Parkdale County Road. This site has a very small amount of rock left. The gravel here is a heterogeneous mix of sizes that range from sand to boulder. The dominant size is in the boulder category. This property is better suited for a stockpile site, or waste site. The gravel is almost depleted. The ground is flat, plenty of room to work, with limited screening from the highway. Why Open/Closed Direction Closed The East Fork of Hood River is across Highway 281 to the west approximately 250 meters. Adjacent Land Use Forest Remarks This site was not found along Highway 281. The Right of Way map does not show enough information to locate this property in the field. I was in close proximity to this site and feel that there would be some overburden, no room to work, and no screening from the road. I have calculated that there could be up to 60,000 cubic yards of material at this location if it were open for use. There is a better quarry site for aggregate production a couple of miles to the sourth. This site has some timber value and plenty of overburden. 202B 203B 211 206 Fine 206 Coarse 208 F 208 F Ht. 208 C 208 C Ht. River Adjacent Land Use Forest/Residences approximately 400 meters south and west. There are a couple of homes adjacent to this site on the other side (southwest) of the river. Remarks This site is located east of the Hood River Highway about 100 meters. The rock is a fine-grain moderately vesicular basalt that is highly fractured with some oxidized zones. The overburden/oxidized zone could be up to 15 feet thick, with the average thickness approximately 6 feet. This is in an area of very steep terrain and care should be used to develop this site from the top down. You could rip the oxidized zone, but the best results would be from drilling and blasting the rock. There is plenty of room to work, with limited to no screening from the highway. This site is used by the Forest Service and Hood River County. There have been past conflicts with the County about this site. Notes about the rock indicate that the soil content is great enough to require two washings to reduce the PI and the LL. It might be important to install a berm adjacent to the East Fork of the Hood River. This would help to keep the fines out of the stream. 202B 203B 211 206 Fine 206 Coarse 208 F 208 F Ht. 208 C 208 C Ht. 2.95 2.83 15.79 4.23 0.77 15.79 0.3 13.4 0.3 Material Use Base and AC rock (1978) NW E Looking to the northeast at the pit floor and the pit wall. The texture of the rock is a fine-grain basalt that is moderately fractured. There is no screening from Interstate 84 and limited room to work at this location. You might be able to rip the material but most likely you would need to drill and blast the rock. The rock should be removed from the top down to efficiently utilize this site. The terrain is very steep at the northern limits of the property with the upper portion being flat. The small pit that is there now has concrete barriers along the road to keep vehicles out. It appears someone has been using the pit as a waste site. There could be up to 500,000 cubic yards of material at this location if it were open for use. Adjacent Land Use Forest/ State Park/ Dodson to the north about 0.5 miles. Remarks I could not find the access road to this site and I did not visit this ground.. This is approximately.5 miles south from Highway 30 and is not visible from the interstate. This ground is in an area of talus at the base of the Columbia River Gorge cliffs. The rock in the area is of good quality. There would be good screening and plenty of room to work. Vehicle access to the site would be through a residential area. The ground is situated in the Gorge Scenic Area and I feel doubtful that we could remove any rock now or in the future. There is approximately 3,870,000 cubic yards of rock available if the site were open for use. 202B 203B 211 206 Fine 206 Coarse 208 F 208 F Ht. 208 C 208 C Ht.
