Suggested Schedule: Arrival Centers 25 minutes Clean-up Time 5 minutes Bible Story Time 15 minutes Craft Time 10 minutes Snack Time 10 minutes Game Time/Dismissal Hour A Unfolding God s Story for Teachers One way Jesus showed His divine power was through healing. Many times we read in Scripture that Jesus saw the crowds and had compassion on the sick, the lame and the dying. His compassion yielded His touch, and multitudes were healed. Jesus replied to John the Baptist s inquiry about His role as the Messiah with these words: Go and report to John the things you have seen and heard: The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with skin diseases are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news preached to them (Luke 7:22). Jesus was all about restoring life! Our final story in this unit is taken from Luke 17:11-19. Again, Jesus encountered a group of men who needed His divine touch. They had a disease called leprosy. Leprosy is a term that describes a variety of neurological disorders. For the Hebrews, leprosy was bad because there was no cure. The disease was usually terminal, but death would be slow because the skin literally rotted away. People with the disease were banned from family and friends. They often lived in separate communities suffering their affliction and begging for food and basic needs. Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem to face His own judgment and crucifixion. Yet putting future thoughts aside, He stopped to heal these 10 men. As was the custom, they knew to stand at a distance. They shouted to Jesus, Have mercy on us (Luke 17:13). Jesus simply told them to go show themselves to the priest. The priest would verify their healing so they would be allowed to return to their families. One man, seeing he had been healed, turned around and returned to Jesus. He fell to his knees and offered his gratitude. Jesus accepted his thanks, but asked about the others. The one man was a Samaritan, a foreigner. He truly realized what had happened. This was more than just a gift of healing. The passage seems to indicate the man had a faith that made him truly whole. How often do we pray earnestly for something, and when our prayers are answered we neglect to offer gratitude that matches our petitioning? One commentary states, God s gifts are given that he might give himself to us and we might give ourselves to him in response (Laymen s Bible Book Commentary Luke). God inhabits the praise of His people. Let us not walk away and forget the Giver of all good and perfect gifts. Lesson Plan Arrival Greet children at eye level and express how happy you are to see them. Be sure each child has a name tag and the security measures of your church are followed. Label all coats and personal belongings. Strongly encourage children who have brought items from home, such as toys and books, to place them on a shelf while they are working with other materials. Assure children their items will be safe and they can take them home at the end of the session. Help each child make a choice where he or she would like to begin his or her Center Time. NT02 Lesson 4 Hour A Page 1

Block Center Build with Blocks Wooden blocks What to Do: Provide a small carpet if possible. Blocks are best located in a corner of the room away from the traffic flow. Encourage preschoolers to work together to build and construct. Link to the Bible Story: As children work, look for opportunities in conversation to say the Bible phrase or interject parts of the Bible story Home Living Center Role Play Doctor and Nurse Doll bed, small rocking chair, sink and stove unit, and small table and chairs. Plastic dishes, child pots and pans, and doll items such as doll bag, blanket, clothes, bottles and diapers. Add a toy doctor or nurse kit to the area. Lab coats or scrub tops would be a fun addition. Provide adhesive bandages, cotton balls, craft sticks and gauze tape for play. What to Do: Straighten and organize the Home Living Center each week. Restock first-aid supplies if needed. Encourage children to role play doctor and nurse. Children can place bandages or gauze on the baby doll. Link to the Bible Story: Tell children that in today s Bible story, 10 men were afflicted with a disease. Because they had a contagious disease, they could not be around their friends and family. This means they were very lonely. Center Time Art Center Paint with Sponges White paper Assorted shapes of sponges for painting or household sponges, clothes pins Several colors of tempera paint What to Do: Print the Bible phrase at the bottom of each paper. To make painting sponges, moisten sponges and cut into shapes. Another fun way to sponge paint is to cut the sponges into 2-inch squares and clip with clothes pins. Moisten the sponges before painting. Pour paint onto paper plates. Invite children to choose a sponge to dip into the paint and create a picture or design. Link to the Bible Story: Read the Bible phrase at the bottom of the sheet. Comment that our story today is about Jesus healing 10 men who had a serious disease Bible Learning Center Finish a Bible Story Picture Copies of Activity Page: One Man Thanked Jesus (Reproducible) Child s scissors, glue Washable markers What to Do: Ask children to color the picture and the figure. Next, children can cut out the figure and glue inside the outline to complete the picture. Link to the Bible Story: Express to children that in our story today Jesus healed 10 men who had a serious disease. Comment that only one man returned to thank Jesus for what He had done. Puzzle Center Work Puzzles Offer a variety of non-fantasy wooden or cardboard puzzles for children to work. What to Do: Invite preschoolers to work puzzles. Encourage children to finish a puzzle before leaving the center. Give guidance rather than doing the puzzle for the child. Link to Bible Story: As children work, look for opportunities in conversation to say the Bible phrase or briefly tell the Bible story. NT02 Lesson 4 Hour A Page 2

Clean-up Time Encourage preschoolers to help at clean-up time. Assign specific tasks for preschoolers to do such as placing all the crayons in the basket, throwing away the trash, gathering all the glue sticks, etc. Guide children to the Bible Story Time area. Bible Story Time Bible Teaching Picture Jesus Healed 10 Lepers (Reproducible) God s Unfolding Story Cube (Reproducible) Introduction Show the God s Unfolding Story Cube. Point to each symbol and tell God s Unfolding Story. (Refer to page 1.) Encourage children to say the story with you. Comment to boys and girls the segment of God s Unfolding Story today is from God sent Jesus to help us. (Point to that symbol on the cube.) Display previous weeks teaching pictures to review the Bible stories from this unit. Give some story details and see if children can identify the pictures. Remind children Jesus healed people through miracles, and a miracle is an event that only God can cause to happen. Comment, We will hear about another miracle in our story today. Listen to hear how Jesus helped 10 men who had a terrible disease. Bible Story Jesus Healed 10 Lepers (Luke 17:11-19) A long time ago, there were 10 men who lived in a small town near Jerusalem. The men had a disease called leprosy. This disease caused terrible sores all over their bodies. The men could not stay with their families or be with their friends because they might spread the disease to them. They were very lonely and sad. The disease made them sick and sore. One day, Jesus was traveling to Jerusalem. He came to the small town were the 10 men lived. The men saw Jesus. They did not get close to Jesus, but they called out to Him and said, Master, please heal us! When Jesus saw them, He told them, Go and show yourselves to the priest. Jesus knew the priest would have to see they were healed before they could go to their families. As the men walked away, their skin no longer had the awful sores. Jesus had healed them of this terrible disease. One man, realizing he no longer had the disease, turned around and came back to Jesus. He fell down on his knees and thanked God that Jesus had healed him. Jesus was glad the man had returned to give thanks, but He asked, Where are the other nine? Jesus wanted all the men to give thanks to God for being made well. Talk Time 1. Show the teaching picture for today s Bible story. Ask the following: How many men met Jesus as He entered the city? What was wrong with the men? What did Jesus ask the men to do? How many men came back to thank Jesus? 2. Read the Bible phrase on the teaching picture. Say the phrase together. Comment that one way Jesus helps people is through healing. Explain to children God often uses doctors and nurses to help people get well. Sometimes God heals someone miraculously. 3. Close the Bible Story Time by inviting children to join you in prayer. Perhaps a child has a family member who is ill. Allow any interested preschooler to pray. Conclude prayer time by thanking God for sending Jesus to help people become well. 4. Direct children to Craft Time. NT02 Lesson 4 Hour A Page 3

Craft Time Make a Bible Story Book Copies of Jesus Heals Story Book (Reproducible) Crayons or washable markers Wall paper scraps or scrap book paper or construction paper Child s scissors, stapler What to Do: Cut covers for the books from the paper (approx. 5-½ inches by 14 inches). Fold in half and print the title Jesus Heals on the front. Invite children to color the pictures for their books. Assist in cutting the pages and putting them in numerical order if needed. Allow children to choose a cover. Demonstrate how to insert the pages inside the cover and staple. Link to Bible Story: Use the book to recall the healing miracles of Jesus children have heard during the unit. Express to children that these miracles helped people know God had sent Jesus to help them and to give glory to God. Snack Time Be sure to wash hands or use hand sanitizer. Say a thank-you prayer to God for the snack. When snack time has ended, encourage preschoolers to help with cleaning up. Game Time/Dismissal Number Games Three pieces of construction paper, marker, stickers What to Do: Cut each piece of construction paper into four rectangles. Ten rectangles are needed for the game. Print a numeral 1 through 10 on each rectangle. Ask children to sit in a circle. Give each child a rectangle; children can work together if needed. Place stickers on the floor in the circle. Have each child identify their number. Ask children to place the number of stickers on their rectangle that represents their number. Give guidance if needed. Several games can be played with the numeral cards. Have children go hide their cards in the room and return to the circle. Instruct children to go find a different numeral card. Bring all cards back to the circle and put them in numerical order. Another game can be played by handing out number cards. Say something such as, If you are holding a 5, jump up and down. If you are holding 3 or 7 clap your hands. Continue until all the numerals have been called. Remind children in today s Bible story, 10 men asked Jesus to heal them; but only one returned to thank Him. Dismiss children as parents arrive. Be sure to follow the security procedures of your church. NT02 Lesson 4 Hour A Page 4
