Suggested Schedule: Arrival Centers 25 minutes Clean-up Time 5 minutes Bible Story Time 15 minutes Craft Time 10 minutes Snack Time 10 minutes Game Time/Dismissal Hour A Unfolding God s Story for Teachers One way Jesus showed His divine power was through healing. Many times we read in Scripture that Jesus saw the crowds and had compassion on the sick, the lame and the dying. His compassion yielded His touch, and multitudes were healed. Jesus replied to John the Baptist s inquiry about His role as the Messiah with these words: Go and report to John the things you have seen and heard: The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with skin diseases are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news preached to them (Luke 7:22). Jesus was all about restoring life! Our final story in this unit is taken from Luke 17:11-19. Again, Jesus encountered a group of men who needed His divine touch. They had a disease called leprosy. Leprosy is a term that describes a variety of neurological disorders. For the Hebrews, leprosy was bad because there was no cure. The disease was usually terminal, but death would be slow because the skin literally rotted away. People with the disease were banned from family and friends. They often lived in separate communities suffering their affliction and begging for food and basic needs. Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem to face His own judgment and crucifixion. Yet putting future thoughts aside, He stopped to heal these 10 men. As was the custom, they knew to stand at a distance. They shouted to Jesus, Have mercy on us (Luke 17:13). Jesus simply told them to go show themselves to the priest. The priest would verify their healing so they would be allowed to return to their families. One man, seeing he had been healed, turned around and returned to Jesus. He fell to his knees and offered his gratitude. Jesus accepted his thanks, but asked about the others. The one man was a Samaritan, a foreigner. He truly realized what had happened. This was more than just a gift of healing. The passage seems to indicate the man had a faith that made him truly whole. How often do we pray earnestly for something, and when our prayers are answered we neglect to offer gratitude that matches our petitioning? One commentary states, God s gifts are given that he might give himself to us and we might give ourselves to him in response (Laymen s Bible Book Commentary Luke). God inhabits the praise of His people. Let us not walk away and forget the Giver of all good and perfect gifts. Lesson Plan Arrival Greet children at eye level and express how happy you are to see them. Be sure each child has a name tag and the security measures of your church are followed. Label all coats and personal belongings. Strongly encourage children who have brought items from home, such as toys and books, to place them on a shelf while they are working with other materials. Assure children their items will be safe and they can take them home at the end of the session. Help each child make a choice where he or she would like to begin his or her Center Time. Display previous weeks teaching pictures to review the Bible stories from this unit. Give some story details and see if children can identify the pictures. Remind children Jesus healed people through miracles, and a miracle is an event that only God can cause to happen. Comment, We will hear about another miracle in our story today. Listen to hear how Jesus helped 10 men who had a terrible disease. Bible Story Jesus Healed 10 Lepers (Luke 17:11-19) A long time ago, there were 10 men who lived in a small town near Jerusalem. The men had a disease called leprosy. This disease caused terrible sores all over their bodies. The men could not stay with their families or be with their friends because they might spread the disease to them. They were very lonely and sad. The disease made them sick and sore. One day, Jesus was traveling to Jerusalem. He came to the small town were the 10 men lived. The men saw Jesus. They did not get close to Jesus, but they called out to Him and said, Master, please heal us! When Jesus saw them, He told them, Go and show yourselves to the priest. Jesus knew the priest would have to see they were healed before they could go to their families. As the men walked away, their skin no longer had the awful sores. Jesus had healed them of this terrible disease. One man, realizing he no longer had the disease, turned around and came back to Jesus. He fell down on his knees and thanked God that Jesus had healed him. Jesus was glad the man had returned to give thanks, but He asked, Where are the other nine? Jesus wanted all the men to give thanks to God for being made well. Talk Time 1. Show the teaching picture for today s Bible story. Ask the following: How many men met Jesus as He entered the city? What was wrong with the men? What did Jesus ask the men to do? How many men came back to thank Jesus? 2. Read the Bible phrase on the teaching picture. Say the phrase together. Comment that one way Jesus helps people is through healing. Explain to children God often uses doctors and nurses to help people get well. Sometimes God heals someone miraculously. 3. Close the Bible Story Time by inviting children to join you in prayer. Perhaps a child has a family member who is ill. Allow any interested preschooler to pray. Conclude prayer time by thanking God for sending Jesus to help people become well. 4. Direct children to Craft Time. NT02 Lesson 4 Hour A Page 3

Allow children to choose a cover. Demonstrate how to insert the pages inside the cover and staple. Link to Bible Story: Use the book to recall the healing miracles of Jesus children have heard during the unit. Express to children that these miracles helped people know God had sent Jesus to help them and to give glory to God. Snack Time Be sure to wash hands or use hand sanitizer. Say a thank-you prayer to God for the snack. When snack time has ended, encourage preschoolers to help with cleaning up. Game Time/Dismissal Number Games Three pieces of construction paper, marker, stickers What to Do: Cut each piece of construction paper into four rectangles. Ten rectangles are needed for the game. Print a numeral 1 through 10 on each rectangle. Ask children to sit in a circle. Give each child a rectangle; children can work together if needed. Place stickers on the floor in the circle. Have each child identify their number. Ask children to place the number of stickers on their rectangle that represents their number. Give guidance if needed. Several games can be played with the numeral cards. Have children go hide their cards in the room and return to the circle. Instruct children to go find a different numeral card. Bring all cards back to the circle and put them in numerical order. Another game can be played by handing out number cards. Say something such as, If you are holding a 5, jump up and down. If you are holding 3 or 7 clap your hands. Continue until all the numerals have been called. Remind children in today s Bible story, 10 men asked Jesus to heal them; but only one returned to thank Him. Dismiss children as parents arrive.
