Your learning experience All of our academic staff teach undergraduate students and use their research experience to create ground-breaking programmes of study. You can choose from a fascinating range of topics (eg Arctic Science to Cinematic Geographies), teaching styles (eg lectures, practicals, fieldcourses) and types of assessment (eg essays, posters, presentations). Research All of the staff who will be teaching you are active researchers. Our academic staff are driving forward intellectual agendas in physical and human geography, as well as helping to shape national and international policy. This expertise ensures that the knowledge you are getting throughout your degree programme is at the cutting-edge of scientific research and focused on some of the most important issues in society today. We have an excellent international reputation for our research across different areas of physical and human geography. Furthermore, we are currently leading a range of exciting research projects funded by major international research bodies and UK Government that sit at the interface of physical and human geography to tackle real-world global challenges. Teaching Teaching is delivered by award-winning staff who are passionate about the topics they teach. The methods of teaching and learning we use vary from large lecture-based classes to seminars and practical classes, through to individual sessions with an academic advisor. A key component of all our teaching is that lecturers will expect active participation by students in every session. Assessment We use various modes of assessment to monitor your progress. Many of our modules have an examination component, including seen or unseen questions, multiple-choice questions, data interpretation or extended essays. The percentage of coursework increases from year to year and can include essays, data-based reports, posters and oral presentations. The precise balance between coursework and exams will be different for each student depending on the programme of study and module choices, but for some students, over 80% of their final year is assessed by coursework. The majority of assessed work is completed individually; however, students are encouraged to work in groups and some modules have group assignments. In the final year, all students have the opportunity to complete a piece of independent research. Facilities We benefit from purpose-built accommodation. Our stateof-the-art geography teaching and research laboratories are staffed by dedicated award-winning technicians. Purpose-built experimental laboratories are used to demonstrate fluvial and aeolian processes, while students can measure sediments using leading-edge instruments and equipment. We have a new geospatial laboratory and specialist equipment which is available to all our students for their individual research projects. Other facilities include meteorological and hydrological fieldstations and access to the Research Forest. Students on all Geography programmes at Loughborough have a personal tutor from the day they arrive. Students meet regularly with their tutor to develop practical study skills and to discuss progress and aspirations. Tutors also act as a first point of contact for any queries a student may have. Through the interlinked strands of human and physical geography, the discipline bridges the social sciences and natural sciences. About the course Our Geography degrees are designed to reflect this and in the first year students are introduced to the major current debates and research in both human and physical geography, as well as developing important skills such as producing geospatial maps and collecting and analysing field data. During their first year all students will participate in a twonight residential fieldcourse. Fieldwork Explore the world with us! We offer an exciting range of residential fieldcourses to students on all undergraduate degrees. All of our first-year students participate in the Practising Geography Residential Fieldcourses. This is a fun-packed and busy few days of varied fieldwork currently carried out in the Peak District. Everyone has a go at collecting their own human geography and physical geography data to learn about field-based research. In the second and final years of each degree programme, we offer optional residential fieldcourses to a variety of locations.* Examples of current fieldcourses: Physical Geography Fieldcourse This second-year fieldcourse traditionally uses North Wales as a base. From here students undertake projects studying coastal systems, glacial history, river habitats and in-stream ecology. Field skills developed include the extraction and analysis of peat cores, vegetation surveys, geomorphological mapping and the characterisation of sediments. Human Geography Fieldcourse This second-year fieldcourse currently visits Paris where students spend their time examining the status of Paris as a world city and explore a number of key sites that stand at the intersection of global flows of capital and culture. Ethnographic approaches are also used to investigate different representations of Paris and to consider how these rely on particular ways of seeing, imagining and experiencing the city. Arctic Glaciers Fieldcourse This final year fieldcourse is currently based at the Tarfala Research Station in the mountains of Swedish Lapland. Students visit several of the glaciers close to the Station. Their work focuses on exploring how glacial and other geomorphological processes have interacted to shape this mountain landscape at a variety of spatial scales and over different time periods. Livelihoods in the Global South Fieldcourse This final-year fieldcourse is currently centred on Accra, Ghana. From here students use a range of qualitative methods to acquire in-depth knowledge of everyday life in the global South and how livelihoods differ according to categories of social difference, as well as how they are affected by historical and contemporary processes. Global Cities Fieldcourse This final-year fieldcourse gives students an opportunity to acquire an in-depth understanding of the processes underlying contemporary global city development. Students currently explore Singapore from different perspectives to understand the economic, social and political changes that have shaped its past and present geographies. The Arctic Glaciers fieldcourse to Sweden was really interesting...to climb glaciers was incredible. I ll never be able to do a trip like that again! Placement year Study abroad Students on all of our courses have the opportunity to spend a year either in the UK or overseas gaining valuable work experience before they graduate. It is a great chance at the end of your second year to take on a professional role with a company or organisation. Many of our students have been successful in securing permanent jobs with their placement companies post-graduation. Why do a placement year? Students who have done a placement year: are more likely to perform better academically and gain a higher degree classification are more likely to be offered a higher salary in a graduate role improve their employability get to try out a career develop key competencies and skills sought by graduate recruiters gain a working insight into an industry sector will often earn a salary. If you successfully complete the year you will be awarded an additional qualification, a Diploma in Professional Studies. How do I find a placement? Although it will be your responsibility to secure your own placement, we provide comprehensive guidance to assist you including tailored advice, employer presentations, skills sessions and talks. We also offer: A dedicated School Placement Director and Placement Team who will support you throughout the process, sending you opportunities, subject specific social media and CV advice. Support via the University s Careers Network and dedicated Careers Consultants who organise employer presentations, skills session Employer Fairs and mock interview/assessment centre practice. Placements are monitored by a Visiting Academic Tutor who supports you with your DPS assessment. What work placements do students undertake? In recent years our students have done placements with organisations such as BP, Volkswagen, Molson Coors, Warner Bros, IBM, Pirelli, Johnson & Johnson, Samsung Electronics, Bosch, Confederation of British Industry, PwC, National Grid, Renault and Sky. Students have undertaken roles such as Logistics Manager, Marketing Intern, Management Consultant, Corporate Finance Analyst, Sports Data Researcher, HR, PR & Social Media Intern and Corporate Affairs. What does it cost? As a placement year will be part of your academic course, you will pay a tuition fee. Placement year fees are set at 20% of the yearly full-time fee for UK/EU students and 3,400 for international students. Students considering a work placement should do it! Use the opportunities and support you have at Loughborough to the full extent as you are unlikely to have such a great network behind you again. It was a great experience. Tom Geography and Management BSc Students on all of our courses have the opportunity to spend a year studying geography at an overseas university after the second year of their degree. This is a great chance to study in a different cultural context, as well as to broaden your horizons, travel and learn a new language. Employers, particularly international businesses, are increasingly looking for graduates who have a global perspective. As a geography student, you will study globalization and the geographies of different cultures and become familiar with physical processes operating in environments quite different to those in the UK. This global perspective can be further developed by studying or working overseas as part of your learning experience. Under the study exchange programme, you can either spend a year in Europe as part of the European Union s Erasmus scheme, or go further afield, outside Europe. Why study overseas? A year studying abroad will improve your ability to: easily establish relations with people from different cultural backgrounds adapt well to new environments be flexible respond positively to challenges network effectively have an international perspective increase your independence. If you successfully complete the year you will be awarded an additional qualification, a Diploma in International Studies. What will I study? Typically, you will study a range of modules at the equivalent of second or final year level. The academic staff at Loughborough have approved modules at all the partner institutions so that you will have the relevant background knowledge. We also ensure that the geography you study overseas will fit with the ethos of the Loughborough programmes. What language will I study in? Classes at most of our partner universities are taught in English please see below for exceptions, for which we recommend at least an A level or equivalent in the appropriate language. You will be strongly encouraged to take language classes appropriate to the country in which you are studying so that you can make more of off-campus activities and chat with your fellow students in their native language. Study is in *Spanish, **French. I spent the year studying at the National University of Singapore and loved every second of it. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of living in such a vibrant mix of cultures and in such exciting surroundings. A major contributing factor to this is the skills that our students develop during their degree including: critical enquiry problem identification and evaluation communication (written, oral and visual) data gathering and information retrieval problem solving and decision-making teamwork and leadership What also marks geographers out in the graduate market is that around 80% of all data collected in Britain today has some geographic reference, such as postcode or National Grid map reference, and there can be no better graduates to use and interpret this wealth of geographical information than geographers. Geographers use these skills in a wide range of careers. Ninety-four per cent* of our graduates go straight into employment or further study across all sectors of the economy, be it in the public or private sector, working for a large multinational company or SME, being based at home or overseas. Employability skills are embedded through our curriculum, either as stand-alone skills based modules (eg tutorials) or integrated into all of our topic-based modules. We have a dedicated Careers Consultant who delivers sessions across all years and all courses. Your personal tutor will introduce you to personal development planning which is done alongside your course to prepare you for graduate life. Students on all of our courses have the opportunity to do a placement year or study abroad and we have dedicated Placements and International Opportunities Team to help students with this. We have very strong links with KPMG and Ernst & Young who run bespoke workshops for our students on topics such as Personal Branding, Know Your Strengths and Commercial Awareness, as well as sponsoring a number of modules with annual prizes. Geography at Loughborough gave me the necessary skills for employment with the Civil Service and a promotion after two years. I refer back to what my degree taught me on a daily basis. Without it I would not have my career. Geography covers the entire world and everything in it meaning you can relate it to any area of employment. With such a range of modules I can always find evidence to show my employer the skills and knowledge I have as a geographer.
