DESI Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) New fibre-fed MOS for Mayall just passed DOE CD-2, on course for 2019 start STFC funding through PPRP (PI: WJP) provided buy-in for 3 UK institutes (Durham, Ports, UCL, +5 scientists including 2 at IoA) Durham providing fibre system UCL providing optical corrector DESI will observe Ω =14,000deg 2 ~20,000,000 galaxies (direct BAO) ~10,000,000 low redshift (z<0.5) galaxies ~600,000 quasars (BAO from Ly-α forest) Cosmic variance limited to z ~ 1.4 Also WEAVE (WHT, 2018 start) and 4MOST (VISTA, 2021 start) but fewer fibres, so less optimized for cosmological applications

Worrying about astrophysics Ross et al. 2014, MNRAS 437, 1109
Getting the statistical analysis correct Given a set of mocks, we can form three possible estimates of the errors: 1. From the individual likelihood surface from each mock 2. From the distribution of recovered measurements from the set of mocks 3. From the distribution of a set of mocks not used to calculate the covariance matrix Naïve expectation: these should all agree! The estimates are biased in subtly different ways given errors in the covariance matrix Percival et al. 2013: arxiv:1312.4841
