Introduction I hope you find this book a useful tool for improving your marks in the Ordnance Survey section of the Geography Common Entrance Examination at 13+. The Geography Common Entrance Examination at 13+ will now have three sections, one which tests Ordnance Survey skills, one which tests the five themes and one which tests your knowledge of global location. The Ordnance Survey questions appear as a separate section in the examination. The questions in this book all refer to the Aberdeen map provided with this book. Remember to check your answers. If you find that you are getting some answers wrong, ask your teacher to explain the correct answers to you. Here are a few handy hints to help you with your Ordnance Survey questions: Always read the eastings before the northings when calculating grid references. If a symbol has a stick or arrow attached always read the grid reference from the tip of the stick or arrow. When calculating distance using a slip of paper, ensure that the point of your pencil stays on the paper when you twist the paper. When estimating area, ensure that you put partially filled squares together to make whole squares. When trying to imagine the relief of a map, remember that rivers flow downhill. This will help you know whether the height of the land is going up or down. I wish you all the best of luck in all of your examinations. Remember that you can be a top geographer! Using this book The book has been designed for use by students, under the guidance of a teacher or parent, as a resource for mapwork practice. The answers are available as a download from www.galorepark.co.uk Belinda Froud-Yannic 2012 1
