Definition [, 1945] Let k be any commutative ring, and let A be an associative k-algebra. The cochain complex of A is C (A, A) = ( C 0 (A, A) d 0 C 1 (A, A) d 1 C 2 (A, A) d 2 ) cohomology where C n (A, A) = hom(a n, A), d n defined in terms of the multiplication on A.

Definition [, 1945] Let k be any commutative ring, and let A be an associative k-algebra. The cochain complex of A is C (A, A) = ( C 0 (A, A) d 0 C 1 (A, A) d 1 C 2 (A, A) d 2 ) cohomology and the cohomology of A is H (A, A) = H ( C (A, A) ).

Why interesting? cohomology H (A, A) classifies infinitesimal deformations of the multiplicative structure of A.

Structure cohomology H (A, A) is a Gerstenhaber algebra, i.e.,

Structure cohomology H (A, A) is a Gerstenhaber algebra, i.e., a graded k-module

Structure H (A, A) is a graded k-module, endowed with a graded commutative multiplication: H (A, A) H (A, A) H (A, A) : α β α β cohomology α H m (A, A), β H n (A, A) = α β = ( 1) mn β α H m+n (A, A).

Structure H (A, A) is a graded k-module, endowed with a graded commutative multiplication, and a Lie bracket of degree 1: cohomology H (A, A) H (A, A) H (A, A) : α β [α, β] α H m (A, A), β H n (A, A). = [α, β] H m+n 1 (A, A).

Structure H (A, A) is a graded k-module, endowed with a graded commutative multiplication, and a Lie bracket of degree 1 satisfying a graded Jacobi identity, graded anticommutativity and such that cohomology [α, β γ] = [α, β] γ + ( 1) m(n+1) β [α, γ] for all α H m (A, A), β H n (A, A), γ H (A, A).

Question How to encode this complicated algebraic structure as compactly as possible?

Definition An operad O consists of a sequence of k-modules O(1), O(2), O(3),...; a collection of k-linear maps cohomology O(k) ( O(n 1 ) O(n k ) ) O ( k ) n i i=1 satisfying reasonable associativity and unitality conditions.

The endomorphism operad Let X be a k-module. The endomorphism operad E X is given by E X (n) = hom(x n, X), if n = k i=1 n i, then cohomology E X (k) ( E X (n 1 ) E X (n k ) ) E X (n) sends to f (g 1 g k ) f (g 1 g k ) : X n X.

Operad maps Let O and P be operads. An operad map ϕ : O P consists of k-linear maps ϕ n : O(n) P(n), n 0 such that O(k) ( O(n 1 ) O(n k ) ) O(n) cohomology ϕ k (ϕ n1 ϕ nk ) P(k) ( P(n 1 ) P(n k ) ) ϕ n P(n) commutes for all k, n 1,... n k.

Algebras over an operad Let O be an operad. An O-algebra consists of a k-module X and an operad map O E X. cohomology Thus: O-algebra structure on X = representation of O on X.

Other categories In the discussion above of operads and their algebras, we could replace k-modules and k-linear maps everywhere by sets and set maps, topological spaces and continuous maps, chain complexes and chain maps. cohomology

The Gerstenhaber operad There is an operad G such that G-algebras = Gerstenhaber algebras. cohomology In particular, for every associative k-algebra A, there is an operad map ϕ : G E H (A,A) parametrizing the natural Gerstenhaber algebra structure on cohomology.

The little discs operad Let D(n) = {configurations of n discs within the unit disc in R 2 } (topologized appropriately) and define D(k) ( D(n 1 ) D(n k ) ) D ( k ) n i i=1 cohomology by embedding configurations. The chain little discs operad is S = S (D; k).

Little discs and Gerstenhaber D detects double loop spaces: X a D-algebra Y such that X Ω 2 Y. [Cohen, 1976] H D = H S = G, whence cohomology C an S-algebra = H C a G-algebra. Question For which chain complexes C can the second implication be reversed? Can it be reversed for C = C (A, A)?

letter [1993] I would like the complex computing cohomology to be an algebra over the operad S (or a suitable version of it). cohomology For any associative k-algebra A, the complex C (A, A) is an S -algebra for some operad S that is equivalent to the chain little discs operad S.

Gerstenhaber-Voronov, 1994 Constructed an operad H that parametrized the explicit up-to-homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra -structure of C (A, A) and a representation H E C (A,A). Left open the question of the relationship between S and H.

Tamarkin, 1998 Constructed an operad G (a sort of minimal resolution of G) and operad maps S G E C (A,A). The first real proof of conjecture, though left open the question of the existence of a representation of S directly on C (A, A).

Voronov, 1999 Constructed an operad S (a geometric resolution of S) and operad maps S S H E C (A,A).

McClure-Smith, 1999 Constructed a cellular topological operad C equivalent to D and an operad map whence and S (C; k) H, S S (C; k) H E C (A,A) H H = H C = H D = G, answering a question left open by Gerstenhaber and Voronov. The first geometric proof of conjecture: the operad S (C; k) comes from topology and acts directly on C (A, A).

Kontsevich-Soibelman, 2000 Constructed an operad P (a tree resolution of S) and operad maps S P E C (A,A).

McClure-Smith, 2001 and 2002 Refined and simplified considerably their original proof, establishing a generalization of the geometric Deligne conjecture.

Berger-Fresse, 2001 Constructed an operad F of simplicial sets such that F D and an operad map C F E C (A,A), where C denotes the normalized chains functor. Another geometric proof.

Other recent In [Kaufmann-Schwell, 2007] and [Batanin-Berger, 2009], nice, small operads were constructed that are equivalent to S, and act directly on C (A, A).

Various generalizations [Hu-Kriz-Voronov, 2003] Proved that if A is an E n -algebra, then C (A, A) is an E n+1 -algebra. [Costello, 2004] Obtained a generalized version of the Deligne conjecture as corollary of an important theorem about topological conformal field theories. [Kontsevich-Soibelman, 2006] Proved that the pair ( C (A, A), C (A, A) ) is an algebra over the chains on a certain colored operad. [Vallette, 2006] Generalized conjecture to algebras over any finitely generated, binary, nonsymmetric Koszul operad.

What? A concrete version of conjecture... Theorem (H.-Scott, 2010) If A is an associative k-algebra, let Def(A) be the space of homotopy deformations of the multiplication on A. Then π Ω 2 Def(A) = H (A, A). Connection with Deligne conjecture... Ω 2 Def(A) is a D-algebra, since D detects double loop spaces. Back to the roots: H (A, A) classifies infinitesimal deformations of the multiplication on A.

Why? Known construct an operad X; show that it is equivalent to S;and show that it acts on C (A, A). Our proof is purely homotopy-theoretic; makes explicit the link between deformation theory of algebras and cohomology; lifts the Gerstenhaber algebra structure on H (A, A) all the way up to the level of topology.

How? The concrete Deligne conjecture is proved by two applications of... Theorem (Dwyer-H., 2010) If (M,, I) is a nice enough monoidal model category, then for any map of monoids ϕ : A B, there is a fiber sequence Ω Map Mon (A, B) Map Bimod (A, B) Map M (I, B).
