MUDES Dpartmnt of Physics and Astronomy, Fr Univrsity, D Bollaan 08, N-08 HV Amstrdam, th Nthrlands W discuss various azimuthal asymmtris in smi-inclusiv DIS and + h h X which involv chiral odd quantitis lik th transvrsity distribution h and a fragmntation function H. For th fragmntation dscribd by H azimuthal angular dpndnc has to b masurd, but no polarization vctor of a final stat hadron. W prsnt first rsults on asymmtris including th lctrowak currnts in on-hadron inclusiv DIS. Transvrsity Distribution h x) Bsids th quit wll-known parton distribution f x) thr ar two diffrnt spin distributions: th longitudinal spin distribution g x), on which a numbr of nw xprimntal rsults hav bn rportd at this confrnc ; th scond on, th transvrsity distribution a, h x), rmains compltly unknown as far as xprimntal data ar concrnd. b Th transvrsity distribution h is qually important for th dscription of quarks in nuclons as th mor familiar function g ; thir information is complmntary. Th rason why h is not dtrmind yt, is th fact that it is a chiral odd f = g = - h = - Figur : Schmatic intrprtation of th thr distribution functions f x), g x) and h x) in trms of diffrncs of) probabilitis. Th longitudinal dirction is assumd to b along th horizontal axis. Prsntd at th workshop on Dp Inlastic Scattring and QCD, DIS98, Brussls 998) a Th function h x) was first discussd by alston and Sopr in Drll-Yan scattring. b Th altrnativ notations qx), qx) and δqx) or somtims T qx) for th lattr) ar also in us instad of f, g and h, rspctivly.

Th quark contnt of h x) in trms of lft-handd and right-handd quarks dfind via projction oprators P / = ± γ 5 )/) is of th form, i.., contains a transition from to and vic vrsa. Sinc QCD intractions consrv chirality, h x) cannot occur alon in a procss cas a in th figur blow), but has to b accompanid by a scond chiral odd quantity, lik.g. th fragmntation function H z) cas c blow) which is th pndant to h for th fragmntation; obviously also th fragmntation function H cannot occur alon as in cas b), i.., is not accssibl in + hx s also a rcnt articl by Jaff 4 ). Φ Φ a) b) c) Figur : Chiral odd functions can hardly b probd in th simpl procsss a) DIS) and b) + hx), whr thy contribut only via supprssd) quark mass ffcts. But thy ar accssibl whn combind with anothr chiral odd quantity lik.g. in c) lh l hx). Azimuthal Asymmtry in SIDIS / Collins Effct To masur transvrsity in on-hadron inclusiv DIS on can look for parts of th cross sction involving h and H. It has th disadvantag that th polarization vctor of an obsrvd spin-/ hadron in th final stat has to b dtrmind. Although not impossibl in principl, for instanc th dcay of Λ s would offr this possibility 5, it is xprimntally difficult. Altrnativly, on can masur azimuthal angular dpndncs in th production of spin-0 or on avrag) unpolarizd hadrons. This production is dscribd by th transvrs momntum dpndnt fragmntation function H x, k T ) which is also chiral odd and, morovr, naiv tim-rvrsal odd, i.., non-vanishing only du to final stat intractions. For a mor dtaild discussion of H x, k T) s lswhr 6. Th us of a naiv tim-rvrsal odd obsrvabl and azimuthal angular dpndnc to obtain information on h x) was proposd by Collins 7. A particular usful rformulation of this proposal for lh l hx can b givn in trms of appropriatly wightd cross sctions dφ l W df = π d q T W dσh hx) dx B dz h dy dφ l d q T. )

Sinc th fragmntation functions involvd ar H and H th corrsponding on for th anti-quark) th ffct is indpndnt of th spin of th producd hadrons; to look for a pair of pions is th most obvious choic, sinc thy ar abundantly producd. c Again th appropriat way to pick out k P P ^ h φ P k ^z lpton scattring plan cm) Figur 3: Kinmatics for two-hadron production in + annihilation. th cosφ)-dpndnt part of th diffrntial cross sction is a wightd cross sction W df dφ l = π d q T W dσ+ h h X) dω dz dz d. 4) q T c This is spin physics with spin-0 hadrons! 3
At th Z-pol, i.., Q MZ, whr most of th EP data ar availabl, th annihilation via a Z boson dominats and th product of H )a with H )a can b obtaind from th wightd cross sction d Q T cosφ) = 3α Q y y) a,ā cl c a H )a z )H )a z ) 4M M 4 s W c W [Q MZ ) + Λ Z M Z ] 5) whr s W c W ) is th sincos) of θ W ; th factors c l = gv l + gl ar rlvant combinations of axial-)vctor couplings. g a V ga A 4 Elctrowak lh l hx A and ca = During this confrnc w hav hard that high nrgy xprimnts rach th prcision whr ffcts from lctrowak currnts hav to b considrd 9. W hav calculatd th diffrntial cross sction for on-hadron inclusiv lptonhadron scattring thrby taking into account th xchang of a photon or a Z boson including intrfrnc trms) polarizd bam/targt/final stat hadron spin-/) dpndnc on th transvrs momntum of th producd hadron. Th full rsults will b prsntd lswhr 0. Hr w giv som xampls in form of wightd cross sctions listd in Tabl. Th lctromagntic part in th cross sction of th first lin is th asymmtry discussd in Sc.. Additionally, from th intrfrnc trm thr is a cosφ l h + φl S ) dpndnc involving th sam combination of distribution and fragmntation functions scond lin). In principl, it provids an indpndnt pic of information for a flavor dcomposition. But sinc, th trm is probably difficult to masur accuratly, on may think of a mor modst usag. Togthr with th simplifying assumption of only on flavor contributing dominantly to th fragmntation,.g. u-quark fragmnting to a π + in th rgion of larg x B and larg z h, this may b usd for an indpndnt cross-chck on h x)h ). Th lctromagntic part of th cross-sction in th third lin was discussd bfor. Also hr w find an orthogonal angular dpndnc rsulting from th intrfrnc of lctromagntic and wak intraction fourth lin). Particularly intrsting is th possibility of non-zro naiv tim-rvrsal odd distribution functions, which would show up in a wightd cross sction lik in th fifth lin. Th lctromagntic trm was discussd by Bor and Muldrs. d Strictly, this givs information for th quantitis only at th scal of th Z mass; volution has to b takn into account for usag in othr hard procsss at a diffrnt scal. 4
