Reactive Fluid Dynamics 5 3 Mechanical Engineering: historical viewpoint Engineering in 20th Centuries Design based on Linear dynamics y = ax, y 0 = ax 0, y 1 = ax 1 2y 0 = a(2x 0 ) y 2 =y 0 +y 1 = ax 0 + ax 1 =a(x 0 +x 1 )=ax 2 y when machine is subject to multiple effects, the results becomes additional. x
Reactive Fluid Dynamics 6 3 Mechanical Engineering: historical viewpoint Engineering in 21st Centuries Design based on non-linear dynamics y y = a x a x y y = e x e x x e -x x If machine is subject to multiple effects, the result is more-additional or less-additional.

Reactive Fluid Dynamics 8 3 Mechanical Engineering: historical viewpoint Most of phenomena are non-linear In 20th century The non-linear phenomena is treated assuming local linearity. y y = e x e x In 21st century The non-linear phenomena is treated as itself constructing new non-linear dynamics e -x x
Reactive Fluid Dynamics 9 4 Chaos, the definition Oxford English dictionary describes: chaos [keias] is a state of complete confusion and disorder. The chaos in the field of engineering: is the deterministic chaos the complicated behavior of dynamical system arising from a strictly deterministic time evolution without any source of noise or external stochasticity. In other words, the chaotic motion is not stochastic but deterministic. Thus, the chaotic motion can be traced and predicted no matter how the motion is complicated.
