There is value in history of science, but that is not (necessary) the mandate of General Chemistry Historical approach we don t do this for stoichiometry! Significant concern: teaching this style of atomic theory leads to misconceptions that are persistent George Gamow and Russell Stannard, The New World of Mr. Tompkins, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 999. This scene is imagined in British physicist Russell Stannard s update to George Gamow s legendary popular science book about Mr. Tompkins a little clerk in a big city bank. The elephant and its rider are travelling through an imaginary land where the seemingly strange behaviour of small macroscopic objects such as horseflies is like that of electrons in atoms in the molecular-level world. This is because Planck s constant (h) [>>Section 8.3] has a value many times greater in quantum land than it has in our real world. As the traveller attempts to locate the horsefly with the swatter, the position of the horsefly becomes more and more uncertain, until all he can see is a blurry, buzzing insect probability cloud, and most of his attempts to hit it are futile. Stannard compares the quantum land insect that can t be clearly located until it is lifeless and still with the electrons that surround the nuclei of atoms in our world: With atomic electrons you have no more certainty of being able to hit one with a photon, than the lad had of hitting the insect. It s all down to probabilities playing the odds. You shine a beam of light on the atom and most of the photons will miss; they pass through without having any effect at all. You just hope one of the photons will score a bull s-eye. (Gamow and Stannard, page 8) Replacing the Bohr atomic model with an accessible picture of how atoms A barrage of swats in quantum land is analogous to a beam of photons in our world. Understanding the quantum mechanical models of the behaviour of electrons in atoms can be puzzling: many of the features of the mathematical models that revolutionized 20th century chemistry and physics are impossible to visualize, and some clash with our experiences of the observable world. In fact, mental images from our everyday experiences can be a barrier to understanding the atomic-scale world, although we can describe atomic-level behaviour accurately using mathematical language. and Examples of misleading images are the familiar representations of electrons around nuclei in atoms shown in Figure 8.. These show pictures of particles moving in welldefined orbits, somewhat similar to planets moving around the sun. As you will see in this chapter, this is no longer the scientists accepted view of electrons in atoms. Teaching the Bohr model leads to misconceptions F I G U R E 8. But the mental picture may help us to understand the important idea that electrons in atoms cannot be precisely located in space. Their very small mass puts them in a grey area between what we accept to be waves (such as radio waves and ultraviolet light) and what we accept to be particles (such as sucrose molecules, grains of sand, and cars). Whatever the nature of electrons in atoms, they have some properties of both waves and particles, so sometimes we NEL 208, Binyomin Abrams 2

There s a big electron cloud where the nucleus is, and there s random electrons inside of it. They re just like electrons buzzing around on the outside of the atom.
