Sentenced to 5 years and 2 weeks "Zuchthaus" (penal servitude) for "Feindbegünstigung" (giving aid to the enemy). Our o n ly son, John Henry I n g r o u ille, was im prisoned by the Germans (31st December 1940) d u rin g the O ccupation and was sen t fo r t r i a l to Jersey (F eb ru ary 5, 1941) a f t e r imprisonment in G uernsey. He was tr ie d f i r s t in Je rse y and th e n, a f t e r im prisonm ent at Caen, he fa c ed a n o th er t r i a l in B e r lin. The N azis accused, him o f " o rg a n isin g armed r e s i s t a n c e of 800 men to oppose the T hird R a i c h l... " (They had search ed our home f o r arm s. This in fo rm atio n was given by the Germans f i r s t by the la te Frances Louise B rew ster (or Hugh, who l a t e r m arried a Pole named Laszczak a f t e r the w a r). She was 15 y e a rs o ld a t the time and the Germans said they could n o t take h er ev id en ce, so they r e lie d on the evidence of h er m other, Mrs. N e llie B re w ste r. But b o th appeared in the Je rse y Court a t our so n 's t r i a l and both m other and d au g h ter c o rro b o ra te d t h e i r e a r l i e r f a ls e evidence when John was tr i e d in B e r lin. He was sentenced to f iv e (5) y e a r s im prisonm ent. The a lleg ed and th re a te n e d u p r is in g which our son was supposed to have o rg an ised was a pure figm ent of the e v i l im aginations of the B rew sters ( a l l i e d w ith the Germans) and was based, on the f a c t th a t John was supposed to have spread news th a t Mrs. B rew ster and h e r d au g h ter were n o t only working fo r the Germans, b u t c o h a b itin g w ith them. W ithout going f u ll y in to d e t a i l s the f u l l s to ry of the B re w ste rs tre a c h e ry was. w r itte n in the lo c a l new spaper, the ' Guernsey Evening P ress" of May 89, 1947 and Septem ber 10, 1948 (c u ttin g s a re a tta c h e d ). L a te r p a r t of the sto ry 'w a s re c o u n ted in the lo c a l p ap er when we managed to g e t our dear s o n 's body bro u g h t back from h is b u ria l-g ro u n d in B ru sse ls and r e i n t e r r e d a t the Vale Cemetery in G uernsey. As you w i l l see from o th e r documents enclosed our son served h is sentence in a h a rd -la b o u r (Z u ch th a u s) p ris o n a t B randenburg. Then, a f t e r l e t t e r s in 1948 comes the o p e ra tiv e one dated May 1945 where he says he has been s e t f r e e and hopes to be home w ith us again soon. This was sen t on by a. kind B r i t i s h Army s o ld ie r of the 1 st B a tta lio n the Glasgow H ig h la n d ers, Capt. J. H. Crook who had found John in a D isp laced P e rs o n s Camp. Then came the aw ful teleg ram from Major Beaugie (whose f a t h e r a t the time was a clergym an in Guernsey) who was s e rv in g a t 111 (B r.) G eneral H o s p ita l, 3.L.A. where John had been ta k en, t e l l i n g of our so n s d e a th on June 1 3 th, 1945 (th e teleg ram was n ot d e liv e re d u n t i l Ju ly 1945) and th is was confirm ed by Major B ea u g ie s l e t t e r dated A ugust 5, 194-5, We do n o t know where Major B eaugie is now so th a t he could confirm the f a c ts s e t o u t in h is le tte r-, b u t no doubt the Army m ight be able to trace him and a t f i r s t hand he could t e l l how?;the s u f f e r in g s i n f l i c t e d on our son, John, by the Germans were the d i r e c t cause of h is untim ely d e ath in B ru s s e ls. When he l e f t Guernsey John was a p e r f e c t l y norm al, h e a lth y young man and had n o th in g wrong w ith him. Had he been humanely tr e a te d he would have su rv iv ed h is o rd e a l. I t is tra g ic to th in k he should d ie from the e f f e c t s of h is s u f f e r in g when on the- journey home to u s. I a lso enclose a l e t t e r from the S a lv a tio n Army in B ru s se ls t e l l i n g of Jo h n s exhum ation and t r a n s f e r of h is body from Belgium to Guernsey, su b se q u e n tly.
