Student Copy Grade 1 Screening Passage 1 Rats The sun sets. The night is still. The people are all at home. Soon animals will come out. Some animals can see at night. You may see a fox. They come out to find food. Rats come out at night too. They will also look for food. They must watch out for the fox. The rats are small. But the fox can see them. It has good eyes. The rats are fast. But so is the fox. It can catch them. The rats stick together. They are safe in their home. The little rats have to stay in. The big rats go out. It is hard to stay in. There is so much to see. The little rats want to go out! One little rat is brave. She sticks her head out. There is a lot to see. And the fox is not there. Then she brings her head back in. She goes back to the others. The little rats hear all about it. 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

His dad always tricks him. One time Dad made their truck stink. Then Mom got in the truck. She gave the air a sniff. The stink was strong. It was there a long time. Mom did not like the prank. Another time Dad hid under the bed. Jim came to find him. Dad sprang from under the bed. He gave Jim a scare. That was a bad trick too. It was not fun at all! Jim did not want to do that. Jim could not think of a prank. Good pranks are hard to think of. A joke could be better. They are always fun. Jim heard a joke from his friend. He told his mom. She said it was great. Dad would like it too! 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 1 Sam Sam wanted to go to the lake. He asked his mom. His mom gave him a hug. Yes, they could go to the lake. Sam went to get his stuff. He and his mom got in the van. Then they left for the lake. Sam began to sing. His mom sang too. They got to the lake. He ran around. Other children were there. He said hi to them. He asked if they wanted to play. They made friends. They ran across the sand together. The day got hot. His mom told him to rest. He sat on the shore. That was a great place to rest! He put his feet in the water. It felt good to Sam. He saw ducks pass by. He fed them. His mom did too. It was time to go home. The day had gone by fast. They got their things together. They got in the van. They drove home. He went to his room. He took a nap. He had a fun day! The lake was great. 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 2 Jon, Spot, and Eve Jon did not have a pet. His dad had a cat as a kid. It was white with a black spot. The spot was on its back. The name of the cat was Spot. His dad missed Spot. It was time for a new cat. They went to get a cat for Jon. Jon was very happy. Other kids were cat shopping too. Jon saw the one for him. She was soft and black. She also had a white patch. The patch was by her back. His dad would be glad. This cat was like Spot. They went home with the cat. Its name was Eve. Most things were new to Eve. Her new home was big. She could run. She could jump. She had a bed for naps. What a great life! 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 3 Jim and Tom Jim and Tom are friends. They have a small house. They have a lot of fun there. The house does not have much light. They can not see well. They have a plan. They will make a hole. Then they will see! The top of the house is thin. A saw will cut it. Jim gets his dad to help. They can not use the saw. They are too little. It would not be safe. But his dad can use the saw. He cuts a hole in the top. But there is still not much light. They need another fix. The house is in the shade. They need to move it. They tug the house. It is hard to move. The grass is wet. Their socks get damp. Jim slips in the mud. Tom gives Jim a hand up. They move the house bit by bit. Now it is out of the shade. They did a good job! 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 4 The Ride Today will be a great day! I am going on a big ride. My dad is going with me. We will have to stand in line. It may take a long time. But I do not care. This will be fun! We sit in the very front. The man puts a strap across our laps. I do not think this is safe. We go up the track. I grab the front. I can see the track shake. I wish I were not here! But Dad claps his hands. He has a big smile. He says to sing a song. We sing until the top. Then we go over the top. We are going fast. The ride goes back up. Then it goes down again. It is like being on my sled. At the end the ride stops. We get out and stretch. That was great. We should do it again! 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 5 Jeff and Chuck Jeff is ten years old. He has a friend. His friend is called Chuck. Chuck is only six years old. He is very little. He wants to be a big kid. Big kids can do many things. They can swim in the lake. Chuck can not swim. Jeff is a good friend. He will help Chuck. They go to the lake. Jeff jumps in. Chuck does not want to jump. He thinks he will sink! Jeff does not sink. He swims around the dock. Chuck only dips his hand in. Jeff asks Chuck to get in. But Chuck does not. Next they stand together on the dock. Chuck wants to be able to swim. Jeff puts his feet in the water. Then Chuck puts his feet in too. Soon they are in the lake. Chuck does not sink! It is fun! All Chuck does is splash around. He can not swim. But he can splash! 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 6 The Shore I love to go to the shore. There are always fun things to do. I go a lot with my mom. Sometimes my dad will come too. It is always more fun with him. We are all going today. I am happy he can come. We put our stuff on the sand. Then we look in the water. I can see a crab! It is under a rock. Only its leg sticks out. It does not think I see it. But the red is hard to hide. It sticks out against the sand. I also see a fish! Dad does not see it. We get out of the water. I want to dig in the sand. I get my spade from the bag. I dig a big hole. Dad sits in the hole. I put all the sand back in. Only his head sticks out. I put a hat over his head. Mom does not see him. Dad jumps out of the sand! That was a great trick! 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 7 Luke and Kate I ran when I was little. But I was very slow. I was not happy about it. My mom asked why I was sad. I said I was too slow. She told me I ran fast. I did not think so. I always lost to the other kids. I was sick of being last. I wanted to win. Every day after school I ran home. I ran around my house five times. The school year was almost over. I was ready at last. I was fast. The last day of school had come. I went to school. Today would be a special day. I would win and be the best. All the kids would be in shock! After lunch I found Luke. He wanted to run. Kate wanted to go with us too. We ran to the tree. At first Luke was in front. Then Kate was in front of him. But I bet I could still win. I ran as hard as I could. I got in front of Luke. Kate was almost too fast. But I was not done. I got to the tree first. I was so happy. 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 8 A Tree Next to my house is a tree. It is a big tree. I want to sit in it. I have always wanted to. But it is too big. My mother thinks it is not safe. I do not care. I still want to try it. One day my mother was not home. She had gone to the store. She would be gone a long time. This was it! I left the house. I looked up at the tree. It was so big! But I was sure. I wanted to get up there. I got to the first branch. I looked around. I bet I could do better. I went up more. I could see so far! I could see the house tops. There were many things on my house! My best kite was up there. I did not see it before. Good thing I went up the tree. I would never have seen it! 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 9 Jane and Hank Jane and Hank wanted some cake. There was no cake in the house. They had to make one. There was a lot to do. They had to find an egg and water. Then they had to bake it. Hank took it out of the oven. Then Jane had to frost it. The cake was white. It took a lot of work. Now it was ready to eat. They each got a plate. Jane cut the cake. Hank took the first bite. It was very good. Hank got both of them a drink. They each had their chunk of cake. It made them both smile. It was just what they wanted. They made a mess. There was a lot of trash. They had to pick up the mess. Hank swept and Jane put things away. Soon they were done. Hank put away the cake. They had more for later. It should be kept fresh. 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 10 The Trip I am going on a trip. My mom will come too. We are going today! We will fly on a fast jet. My dad will not be with us. Only me and my mom are going. It is a trip just for us! Before the trip I have to pack. First I need a bag. I can not find a good one! This one is too big! I can not lift it. The next one is too small. It will not fit all my stuff. I ask Dad if he has one. He has one that is just right. I pick out some soft pants. They will be great for the trip. I will nap during the jet ride. It will take a long time. The city is very far away. Dad just called up to me. It is time to go! I am happy about my trip. This will be fun! 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 11 Sam Sam just got home. She was in school all day. She wanted to do something fun. She could ride her bike. Her bike was pink. It had a red light. She always rode it after school. It was very fun for her. Sam went out to find her bike. She thought it was against the house. Sam looked there. She could not find it. Where did it go? Sam went to ask her dad. He was not sure where it was. Sam looked all over. What if it were lost? This thought made her sad. She must find it. Her father called for her. It was time to go in. Sam did not know what to do. She ran around the house. Then she saw her bike. It was near the shed. It was in the wrong place. She was so glad to find it. She went in and told her father. 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 12 Pink I like to play with my pets. We have a cat and a pig. I have three dogs too. I like my pig the best. Her name is Pink the pig. Pink and I like to take trips. Sometimes the dogs come too. Pink wanted to see the city. I wanted to see it too. I thought we could take a bus. We could not. Pink could not ride the bus. We had to find another way. We were not sure what to do. We could not hike. It was too far. My dad said he would take us. He had a big truck. We all got in the truck. We drove for a long time. Soon we could see the city. We were there! There were a lot of people. They were all in shock. There was a pig in the city! Pink and I looked around. The city was so big. She wanted to go back home. I did too. We like the city. We like our home better. 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 13 Pam and Spot Pam has a dog called Spot. He is the family dog. It was time for a bath. He was out all day. It was wet out. Spot had mud all over him. It was even over his eyes! Pam should give him a bath. It was going to be hard. Spot did not like water. Pam had to trick him. She did not see how. She thought and thought. Then she got it! Spot always wanted a dog snack. She led him up to the tub. The tub did not have water. Pam put a snack near the tub. He got close. Then she put one in the tub. He got in. He ate the snack in the tub. Pam turned on the water. He wanted to jump out. Pam did not let him. Now he was all wet. Pam had to scrape the mud off. Soon the mud was gone. She had to dry Spot. Then he got out of the tub. He ran through the house. Pam was glad it was over. 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 14 A Fun Day Today will be a fun day. My family is going to a show. We will be in a tent. The top is red and white. The tent is very big. There will be lots to see! This is my first time. I am happy we get to go. Now we are there. We are in a big tent. There is a big bang. It is time for the show! The stage lights are on. People and animals are on the stage. I see a man spin a plate. A big cat jumps and spins. Then I see a dog. The dog can ride a bike. He can sing a song. I like the show. There is lots of food. I have cake. Dad has nuts. I want a drink. We both get a can of pop. Then the show is over. It is time to go home. This was a good day. 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 15 Brad The sun was out. It was very hot. Brad went out for a run. He ran a long way. Soon he was very red. Brad was far away from home. He had to stop. He did not look well. He sat on a bench. Brad was still very hot. He felt sick. He thought of how to fix this. Brad got up. He went to sit in the shade. That did not help. There was a pond near him. A swim could help. The water looked bad. He did not want to swim there. He must go home. Then he could make himself better. It took a long time. There was a fan in the house. It felt great in there. Brad got a cup of water. The drink was good. He found a wet rag. He put it on his head. Brad felt better. He went to his room. He wanted some rest. Next time he should run less. Today was too much. 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 16 Camp My family and I like to camp. We go on lots of trips. We always go to a new place. It is lots of fun. We set up the camp site. Then we look for things to do. I like to go up trees. There are jobs to do. We have to put up the tent. Then I get water from the lake. We use it to make our food. After we eat we put the food in a bag. We hang it in a tree. There it is safe from animals. Now it is time for fun. First I grab a tree branch. I jump and lift up. I keep going up and up. I get to the top of the tree. I find a nest in the tree! There are eggs in it. Then I see a cave. I go to look in it. I poke my head in it. I can not see. There is no light in the cave. But I see a big rock. There are bugs under it! This is fun. I like to find eggs and bugs. 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 17 Cass Cass had to go to school soon. She went to put on her dress. She looked in her room. It was on her bed. The dress was red. The cloth was very soft. Cass had a lot of red things. She looked at her dress. It looked very little. It could not go around her neck. Her dress had shrunk! Cass was really sad. It was her best dress. It would not stretch much. What should she do? She could put it in the trash. That thought made her even more sad. It was a great dress. She could not toss it away. Cass thought some more. Her friend Eve could use it. Eve was small. The dress might fit her. Cass could ask for a new dress. Then they both could have one. They could look the same! It was almost time for school. Cass had to find another dress fast. She saw her pink dress. She put it on. Then she ran out the door. She wanted to tell Eve before school. 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 18 Ted and Pete Ted is a small cat. He is black and white. He has a friend named Pete. Pete is not a cat. He is a pig! Ted and his friend live together. They live by a pond. Pete thinks he is a black cat. Other animals see he is a pig. But Pete does not! He asks Ted what animal he is. Ted is not sure. Ted says Pete is pink. He says Pete does not have fluff. But he has black eyes. Pete thinks this is great. Pete looks at himself in the pond. He can see himself. He does not look like Ted. Ted and Pete sit in the sun. The sun feels good on their ears. Pete thinks about being a pig. Cats and pigs are very different. But Pete and Ted are good friends. It is good to be different! Pete is glad to be a friend. 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 19 Skiing I love to skate and ski. I like to skate the most. Today it is not safe to skate. It is too hot. It is a good time to ski. It is not too hot for that. I will get set to go out. I find ski pants. I put on my shirt. But I can not find my hat! I ask my mom for my hat. She has not seen it. I look at my dog Spot. Did he take it? I do not think so. He used to take things. But he does not any more. I put my hand under my bed. There is something gross under there! I wish I had not felt that! Next I look in the shed. There are a lot of things there. There are old bats. My old bike is in here! But I do not see my hat. I give up. I will never find my hat. I am sad. I can not ski without it. And I really wanted to go. Just then my mom says my name! My hat was in the truck! 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

Student Copy Grade 1 Progress Monitoring Form 20 Jen and Nick Jen wanted to go out and play. She was in the house all week. It was time to get out! She stuck her head out the door. It was a great spring day! The sun was out. She took a step. Then she ran on the grass. It felt good on her feet. The grass was very soft. Jen saw her friend Nick. She called over to him. She told him to come and play. First Nick asked his mom. She said he could go over! Nick ran to Jen. There was a bush. He took a hop over it. Nick and Jen love to play together. They spun around in a big ring. They spun so fast! Jen hit the grass with a crash. Good thing the grass was soft! She could not spin any more. She looked up at Nick. He gave her a grin. Then he sat next to her. Nick and Jen are great friends. 2013 Theodore J. Christ and colleagues
