Intro to Thermodynamics With Angry Birds Physics Feb 2014 J. Tobler

What is Thermodynamics? The study of heat and its transformation into mechanical energy Started with the invention of the steam engine in the 1800 s They wanted to create more efficient and powerful engines and thermodynamics helped them do this Studies the relationship between heat and temperature and how they relate to work and energy Involves chemistry and physics principles

A few words from Bill Click on the link below to a YouTube Video Bill Nye: Heat Eureka: Temperature vs Heat

Reading Questions: 1. What is the smallest piece of iron you can have? 2. What is the fundamental building block for all objects? 3. Why can so many atoms fit on the tip of a pin or a gran of salt? 4. Can atoms be broken? If so what do you get?

5. What are the phases of mater? 6. Describe how the molecules behave in each state of matter. 7. Rank the phases from greatest energy to least energy.

8. What is thermal equilibrium? 9. Do temperature and thermal energy have to be the same? 10.What direction does heat energy flow?

11.What is volume? 12.Describe how pressure and force are related. 13.As temperature of a gas increases what happens to pressure? Why?

14. Temperature measures the energy NOT the energy of the material. 15.What determines the amount of total energy in a material? 16.Why don t you get burned from a Sparkler on 4 th of July? 17.Water is used as a coolant because it takes times the energy to increase its temperature then a piece of steel with the same mass.

18. Why do we feel comfortable when it is 70 F outside but 70 F is too cold to swim in? 19. Thermal energy always flows from to 20.The speed of energy transfer depends on. 21.What is a calorie used for?

22. When KE decreases where does the energy go? 23. Friction causes and increase in Energy. 24.Explain how you can use sticks to start a fire.

25. What forms of energy are found in fire? 26. What is needed to keep a fire going? 27.What can the color of the flame tell you about the fire? 28.What shape would a flame have on the International Space Station?

29. What is the 4 th phase of matter? 30. In a plasma the atoms move so quickly that the electrons can the atoms. 31.What is the most common state of matter in the universe? 32.Where can you find plasma in your homes or school?
