The first two years study are common to all programmes and are designed to provide a broad foundation both subject-specific and generic knowledge and skills across a broad range chemical topics. In addition to the specified chemistry, students in Year 1 are

required to take 12 credits optional that can be in a non-chemical subject area. In the first and second years, students may also elect to study up to credits worth additional, the most common example being the study a language. Year 3 may comprise the final year study or may involve undertaking a paid placement in an industrial setting or studying at an overseas institution with whom we have an exchange agreement. When Year 3 is spent on placement or at an overseas university, the final academic year will be Year 4. The academic components the BSc Chemistry programmes are therefore identical. The structure the final year allows students to refine their studies in areas specific interest or relevance to their intended career choice. Core chemistry lecture and practical are taken. In addition, a choice optional lecture is available and students have considerable choice subject area for their project or dissertation depending on the aspect chemistry in which they seek to specialise. Educational aims the programme* The portfolio programmes fered by the Department Chemistry is designed to equip students to become pressional scientists or for more broadly-based scientific careers. Our overall aim is to provide the highest quality teaching in chemistry and the skills essential for its communication and implementation. This is achieved in a modern and well equipped learning environment with pastoral and academic support that ensures our students have the opportunity to reach their full potential. The specific aims the BSc (Honours) Chemistry programmes are: To maintain and enhance the sense enthusiasm for chemistry; To provide a sound background in all aspects chemistry, including material at the forefront current research; To provide a knowledge base in chemistry and to develop an understanding theories chemical behaviour; To develop competency in experimental chemistry; To develop the ability to analyse, integrate and apply new information and techniques; To provide opportunities to develop a range generic skills that are important in both chemical and non-chemical careers; To fer a structured coherent but flexible programme relevant to the needs employers and society; To fulfil the academic requirements the Royal Society Chemistry to be eligible for admission as Associate Member (AMRSC) status on graduation. chemical problem; To appreciate and relate the impact chemistry in the modern world. Intellectual Skills: To propose and apply creative solutions to chemical problems; To integrate and evaluate information and data from a variety sources in order to gain a coherent understanding theory and practice. Pressional Practical Skills: The ability to undertake competent, safe, evaluative, reflective and effective practical work; The ability to critically analyse experimental results and determine their strength and validity. Transferable/Key Skills: To communicate effectively in a variety formats in order to present the results project work; To work effectively as part a team; To demonstrate the ability to manage time, prioritise workloads, and utilise long- and shortterm planning skills; To learn independently in familiar and unfamiliar situations with open-mindedness and in the spirit critical enquiry; To communicate conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences. Structure and content the programme (including potential stopping f points) Full details the core and optional are given in the Programme Descriptions (appended). A variety teaching methods is used as appropriate to the unit being studied. Most new information is introduced by way lectures supported by problem classes. In addition, in Years 1 and 2, students attend small-group tutorials each week with a member staff. Time is devoted to directed reading, the use online resources and independent study. Approximately 20% the programme in Years 1 & 2 will be spent on laboratory-based practical work. Advanced practical work and a project or dissertation form a significant part the final year. At the end Year 1, students can elect to transfer onto Chemistry for Drug Discovery, Chemistry with Management or Chemistry with Education if the appropriate optional have been studied, subject to meeting any progression requirements (subject to NFAAR). Students can elect to transfer onto an MChem programme at the end Years 1 or 2, subject to obtaining the appropriate threshold marks (overall stage averages 50% in Year 1, 55% in Year 2). Students on the BSc Chemistry programme can transfer onto the MChem Chemistry programme during Year 3 subject to gaining a credit-weighted average mark 0% in Semester 1 and having studied the appropriate. Students who are eligible to transfer, and who wish to do so should inform the Director Studies their intention no later than the end March. Details work placements / work-based learning / industrial training / study abroad requirements Year 3 may be spent undertaking an industrial placement or study year abroad in addition to the three academic years study. The placement is an integral part the learning and teaching processes the degree and is fully assessed, though does not carry a contribution to the degree classification. Industrial Training Year Pressional or industrial placements for a year or a semester are particularly supported at Bath by specialised staff and these arrangements are demonstrably effective for improving degree grade and employability within six months graduation. s are arranged in

conjunction with the departmental s Tutor. After a detailed briefing, students choose from a list 0+ companies with whom the department has built up a constructive relationship over the 35 years that the placement scheme has been in operation. A CV and/or application form is completed and submitted with a tutor reference usually by electronic means. Advice is given as to CV preparation and interview techniques in conjunction with the University Careers Service. While on the placement, students will be paid a salary. By undertaking the Industrial Training year, a student should be able to: Apply academic knowledge to real-world applications chemistry in an industrial setting; Analyse, interpret and report scientific and/or commercial information; icipate constructively in discussions concerning their work and contribute ideas as appropriate; Demonstrate pressional attitudes to work including reliability, planning and time management skills, the ability to operate as part a team and to respond to leadership; Investigate and analyse aspects the pressional practice chemistry in their organisation; Organise a personal work schedule effectively, including the setting targets and objectives; icipate in an extended programme chemical work and to develop practical skills appropriate to the area work; Demonstrate innovative or original approaches to the work, problem-solving and analytical skills. During the placement, all students will be visited by a member staff from the Department. They also maintain contact via the VLE and email. In addition, all students will be expected to return to the University to attend a Conference at which they will make a presentation on their placement. The schemes are overseen by a Year Tutor and operate in collaboration with the University s International Office. Details potential host institutions are available from the Department. Prior to leaving Bath, students will be briefed as to the academic requirements the year, which may include undertaking a research project and the opportunity to broaden a student s interest by studying a limited number non-chemical topics. The precise content the year will vary with the host institution but before commencing study, the programme work will be agreed with the SYA tutor and approved by the Department Learning, Teaching and Quality Committee (DLTQC). By undertaking the Year a student should have: Developed communication skills, self-confidence and maturity, and the ability to work and interact effectively in a group environment where cultural norms and working practices may be different from those previously familiar; Improved their knowledge the host language the host country, where this is not English. In some cases this may involve comprehension and communication chemical ideas in a foreign language; Broadened and consolidated their academic horizons by attending approved courses at the host institution; Students maintain close contact with the department via the VLE and email, and are ten visited by a member staff from the Department. Details support available to students (e.g. induction programmes, programme information, resources) Common with all other programmes fered by the Department Chemistry, undergraduate students will be allocated a Personal Tutor who is responsible for monitoring and supporting their academic progress and their general welfare. Staff in these roles will be able to respond

to many the questions and concerns raised by their students. However, there is also a range specialist student support services that will fer both information and advice to support these staff working with their students, as well as take referrals to work more directly with the students. Students can also self-refer to these services. The support services can provide information, advice and support in relation to accommodation, emotional difficulties, assessment needs and provision support relating to disability, student funding, general welfare, academic problems, student discipline and complaints, careers, international students, spiritual matters, part time work, security and personal safety. The Students Union can also provide advocacy for students. More information about these services can be accessed via: http://www.bath.ac.uk/students/support/ All students are allocated three discipline-specific tutors who monitor and support academic progress in the areas organic, inorganic and physical chemistry; students meet one these tutors each week during Years 1 and 2. The Department Chemistry fers an Induction programme to all new students as part a university-wide Week 0, including department-oriented sessions on course structure, the tutor system, placement opportunities, seeking help etc. All Year 1 students are provided with a Programme Handbook, which is available electronically to all students via the VLE. The Programme Handbook provides detailed information on a range topics including programme structure, options, assessments and student representation. University Bath students attending programmes study at the Claverton Campus are usually encouraged to stay in University halls residence during their first year and will be supported in their transition into University life and study by Resident Tutors. These are postgraduate students or staff who live in the halls residence and are responsible for the general welfare, health and safety and discipline student residents. There are also Medical and Dental Centres, and a Chaplaincy on campus that are very experienced in meeting the needs a student population, as well as a University nursery and vacation play scheme to provide childcare for older children during the school holidays. Admissions criteria (including arrangements for APL/APEL) The admissions criteria are common to all programmes fered by the Department Chemistry. The programme is fully compliant with the new framework for assessment, details which can be found at: http://www.bath.ac.uk/registry/nfa/#nfaar-ug With respect to the BSc Chemistry with Industrial Training programme, to pass the placement year (CH30054), students will be expected to Undertake a minimum 44 weeks employment; Receive, upon completion, a satisfactory report from their supervisor; Complete a satisfactory final report, marked by a member staff in the Department Chemistry; Have given a short presentation on their placement to a peer group audience, normally at the annual placement conference. A fail in this unit will require the student to transfer to the BSc (Hons) Chemistry (USCH- AFB01) programme. In addition, any student failing to secure a placement will transfer onto this DAP. With respect to the BSc Chemistry with Year programme, to pass the placement year (CH30058), students will be expected to

Undertake a full academic year at the overseas institution; Pass or have condoned the equivalent to at least 48 Bath credits. A fail in this unit will require the student to transfer to the BSc (Hons) Chemistry (USCH- AFB01) programme. In addition, any student failing to secure a year abroad place will transfer onto this DAP. Indicators quality and standards (e.g. pressional accreditation) The University Bath is a top-ranking University, usually in the Top 10 in the UK, with a strong and growing international reputation. It was the Times and Sunday Times Campus University the Year 2014, and first in the National Student Survey for student satisfaction in 2013. The Department Chemistry has a strong record for both teaching and research. It was joint fifth for student satisfaction amongst UK chemistry departments in the National Student Survey 2013 and in the top three for EPSRC grant income in 2013. All current degree programmes in fered by the Department Chemistry (BSc, MChem, MSci) were accredited by the Royal Society Chemistry in August 2012. Pressional bodies such as the Royal Society Chemistry require particular standards and content in our programmes so that students exit able to claim pressional registration or recognition, enabling them to progress successfully in their subsequent careers.
