NRCan Inactive Mines Projects Projects performed 1992-1997 separate partnership agreements with Ontario (MNDM) and Nova Scotia (Department of Natural Resources), developed In Ontario, modeled 100 highest priority sites identified by Province In Nova Scotia, modeled 64 mines (mostly coal) 2 CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES

NODA Inactive Mines Project project funded by NRCan, Ontario MNDM and industry nearly 100 mines modeled in detail high level of cooperation between MNDM and CANMET 3 CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES

NODA Inactive Mines Project Purpose was to: develop computer techniques and software to establish and manage a comprehensive inactive mines database enter into the database, site information based on priorities of Provincial and industry partners Incorporated site information from Ontario s AMHAZ database 4 CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES

Design Features: user friendly uses data from existing sources wherever possible provides compatibility with popular commercial software (AutoCAD, Corel WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, ArcView, etc) 5 CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES

Design Features: easy and timely access to data (Internet, modem, hardcopy) provides for updates, additions, and operations with data security of information 6 CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES

Commercial Software (can be user specified) Document Selected GIS Interface Selection Set IAM User Interface Document Selected Request Request Data Capture Data Data IAM Database Attributes Documents Selection IAM Database Documents Data 7 CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES

Types of information included: tombstone and known hazard data (from Provincial authorities) physical representation of mine (underground workings, surface structures, tailings areas), related to Base Maps and survey plans where warranted, 3D models of physical features 8 CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES

Types of information included: inventory of properties of mine wastes air-photos technical and scientific reports other important documents 9 CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES

Current status: basic database is maintained Ontario data routinely provided to Ontario Government officials (Resident Geologists) Ontario data provided (on authorization of MNDM) to private interests (ie. copies of Kam Kotia file to 23 firms responding to RFP for remediation of site) 11 CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES

Current status: Project Leader position established, supporting expertise as needed (drafting, modeling) Special studies performed as needed (current - A Canadian Standard for Shallow Stope Decommissioning) 12 CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES

Future capabilities: facilitate communications between jurisdictions, work towards common standards, information center re best practices special studies at problem sites - ground control issues, environmental issues maintain a distributed database 13 CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES
