Choose a celebrity from the PowerPoint in class and describe them. What are properties? A property is used to identify an object s characteristics and behavior.
In chemistry there are two kinds of properties: physical properties and chemical properties. PHYSICAL PROPERTY CHEMICAL PROPERTY Definition A characteristic that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. The ability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more other substances. Examples Some properties of copper are given to you below. Please classify each property as physical or chemical. Properties of Copper Reddish brown, shiny Easily shaped into sheets (malleable) and drawn into wires (ductile) Forms new substances when combined with nitric acid and sulfuric acid Physical (P) or Chemical (C) Property? Density = 8.92 g/cm 3 Melting point = 1085 degrees Celsius Forms a deep blue solution when in contact with ammonia Good conductor of heat and electricity Forms green copper carbonate compound when in contact with moist air Boiling point = 2570 degrees Celsius
CHEMISTRY LAB #3 CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES WITH HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS 50 MINUTES Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to examine chemical and physical properties of a variety of substances. Background: Scientists determine properties of matter using a variety of senses and tools. There are two types of properties of all matter, physical and chemical. Physical properties are those that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. Chemical properties are the ability of a substance to combine or change into one or more different substances. In this lab, you will have a chance to explore both types of properties. WARNING: Please use caution when conducting the flammability test. Use the proper technique when checking for odors: Gently wave the palm of your hand above the surface of the sample to waft vapors toward your nose. Materials: Safety goggles Matches Napthalene (C 10H 8) Conductivity Tester Watch glass Isopropyl alcohol Tweezers Steel Wool (Fe) white vinegar Bunsen burner Sucrose (C 12H 22O 11) Distilled water Procedure: There is no real specific set of procedures for this investigation. Make sure you investigate each individual substance separately BEFORE performing the flammability test. To test the flammability of a solid: Use tweezers to hold a very small piece in the flame. To test the flammability of a liquid: Place a few drops on a watch glass and touch the liquid with a lighted match.
Record your observations in the table below. Substance Tested Physical State Odor/ Appearance Conducts electricity? Flammable? Steel Wool Sucrose Napthalene Isopropyl alcohol Vinegar Distilled Water
